They all look great... I especially like this one.

thanks for sharing this technique. I did a strip skirt today and the gathers were so heavy! I wanted to do a drawstring waist with a big polka dot bow and it was impossible. I think with this technique my orginal idea would have worked!

Another option for stripwork skirts is to gather the panels onto a narrower strip of fabric at the waist. That helps cut down on the bulk at the waist without reducing the fullness. Here's an example of one I did last year. If I did it again, I'd make more panels so it's even fuller. :)

One other Question for you-

I am going to do a patchwork skirt. What is a good size square to work with? Should I invest in a quilting cutting ruler or square? TIA!:cutie:

What type of skirt? For the twirl skirts/dress I've shown, I cut my strips for each tier 4"-6" wide depending on the final length of the skirt. The length of each depends on how many panels I'm going to do for each tier and the pieces on one tier are twice as long as the pieces in the tier above. For the set below, the patches were square, 6" x 6" I think. I really like my rotary cutter, ruler and cutting board but they aren't necessary unless you're going to be cutting a lot of things that way, like for quilting... or just like to have more gadgets/notions. LOL

I didn't own a serger until about 2 years ago when I started sewing for people other than my DD and me. Before then I would do a zigzag over the edge of the fabric where it wouldn't be encased. Now that I have a serger, I would miss it because it does save time and my seams look more finished. I still do all the seam stitching on my sewing machine first and then run them through the serger.

I do mine as a wedge. I like to have the skirt really full and if I did a rectangle the fabric would add more bulk at the waist then I like. I really like to develop patterns that have as little waste as possible. Here's a quick sketch of what the layout would look like.

Thank you so much!!! You are so sweet to share.

I'm not going to be any help, but wanted to say that you are doing a great job so far! Looks good!

I have a related question too... when you do the stitches by hand... do you use one of those circle things? I'm not up on my sewing technology... obviously... but those little holders you stick the fabric in to make it tight and easier to sew??? Can you do it without that? Or should I go get one?

Hi Mara, I did it without one and its far from perfect since this was my first time and I was learning as I went. You can do it without one but it may come out better with one. Yeah, and what are they called anyways? They keep the tension even. Anyways, I knew what you meant

I almost bought that fabric! I love it, so cute.
I had no idea what I would do with it so I walked away. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I love that Pixar short....did you recognize my avatar :)

OMGoodness...look at that....how hilarious! :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

I have seen birds on a wire...it's my favorite...I have it on my itunes...lol it's great!!!!
I can't wait to get it..it was expensive but better than spending $135 for this outfit...:rotfl:

Birds On A Wire Fans Unite!!! I didnt realize there were so many of us!

Hello all i just wanted to share some of my sewing tips i have recently learned..:rotfl:
1. Do not sew with a 2yr old monkey hanging under the table(tends to touch the foot pedal:laughing:
2.The seam ripper is not your enemy he is your friend but you can only pick him up 1 time after 3x's quit for the day:scared1:
3. Do not try to sew while 6 month old cocker spaniel puppy wants to play:dogdance:(pull mr seam ripper out)
4. do not try to sew while helping 10 yr old ,8 yr old and 6 yr old with homework:wizard: (a seam ripper does not belong behind your ear it is not a pencil):sad2:
5.and finally if your dress does not turn out the way you want, smile and make it a nightgown:headache: :goodvibes

This is sooo appropriate! Last evening after dinner I have my 3 year old on one knee while she fiddled with the no-no's = seam ripper, scissors and thread. Did you know she could stack them and knock them over while singing the Hannah Montana theme song??? I, on the other hand, was trying to sew my princess face and keep the younger one out ( I have a two year old as well). No wonder I get nothing accomplished!! :rotfl2:

Good Morning Ladies, and Gentlemen closet tailors (do you know any of them?;) )

I have decided that I would like to thank everyone here for all your kind words of encouragement, tons of helpful tips and advice, and even your gentle nudges of "enabling".:rolleyes1

I have been witness to some of the truly wonderful things that "strangers" have done for other people out of the goodness of their heart! :goodvibes And I would like to reciprocate this, even in just a little way.

I would love to send one pair of custom "boutique" style bows to a poster, or even "lurker" on this thread.

Your choice of colors, but my choice of design. If you have a certain outfit in mind, I am sure that I can come up with something to coordinate.
DW has told me that my "new-found" talent is awesome, and is really impressed! (That means a lot coming from her!)

I do not sell or have I sold on "Voldemonte", or do I plan to sell on "Voldemonte", so I am not trying to advertise or promote my business.
(Yay! I got to use the code name! )

I do not have a Boutique, or a Web-site boutique, or even sell from the corner of my garage or from the depths of a dark and spooky basement!

I am just doing this to spread a little pixie dust and as a friendly gesture to a fellow DISer!

To make this fair to everyone, I have decided to take PM's until 8:00 p.m. EST tonight -DIS time, August 10th. (Please state "Bows" in the subject line) Please do not PM after that, I will just have to delete them.:upsidedow

I will put all the names in a hat and have DD pick the lucky name. I will then PM you to make all the arrangements.

I will post the lucky recipients finished bows on this thread!
I will not give the recipients name on this thread. They are welcome to come forth if they want.

So anyone with a daughter, niece, grand-daughter, or even yourself (why not?) feel free to PM me.

Sorry for all the above mumbo jumbo, but I really don't want to get any infraction points against me, so I am trying to clearly state my intentions to just cover myself. (Did that make sense?)

DW has been collecting ribbons for quite some time now, so I have quite the array of colors available. (o.k. not as much as The Seamstress;) , but still alot!)

Have a great day all, and again Thanks!

disneylovinfamily those are super cute.

This technically isnt a sewing thing as a crafty thing, but I am stumped....
I appliqued this dolphin on to a t-shirt for DS (we used the clear gel fabric paint hoping it would look like water...it kind of does, just not in this photo) but I think it might still need something.

dolphin.jpg

maybe a friend (another dolphin) or should I try to add bubbles or waves with the paint? I like it and am a bit nervous about messing up what I have, but I am willing to try to make it better. (Do you know that feeling?)

Thanks for any ideas.

I like the simplicity of this. Maybe a second one, but I wouldn't do bubbles or waves. i like that it is a dolphin, with a dolphin fabric. Very boutique looking. I have wanted to try to do a Manatee, but they are so "sea cow" type body, I'm not sure anyone would recognize what it is. Perhaps, if I did it with Manatee fabric though, it might work.

This pattern is great. I have some Tink fabric that I was not sure what to do with. I wanted to do something with petals. I saw this on eb*y I think and loved the petals. I loved the top but not the jeans. The appliques are gorgeous but the jeans were not right for us.

This is the outfit I told Tom I could get him pictures of. I am hoping to get one of these made for my daughter. What don't you like about the jeans? Is there somthing I am missing that you could tell me before i spend gigantor bucks? Thanks!

The jeans are great! We are just not going in Winter! I also have a really tall skinny girl. Jeans are really tricky to fit her. The baby is really small so dresses are easier to adjust for us! DD3 is the 98th% and DD1 10%!!!

I love the whole look of the outfit! I think it is adorable and the appliques are gorgeous!!!

I LOVE THIS!! Gorgeous! Can you pm me where you got it?

Thanks!

Tom, what a sweetheart you are I am not going to enter for the bow though cause I have a boy so I would rather let someone else get it. You do realize now you have about 50 'girlfriends' on here. :love1: Just don't tell our Dh's. :rotfl2:

Oh yeah, I finished my Mickey JonJon's. As soon as I get my little guy to try them on I will post some pics.

I stayed up until 4 am last night. I had 101 thing to do. I am going to pay for it today!

Here is what I made. I cut the minnie dot fabric for the first time! I was so scared! I am seriously in love with the ruffler. We should get a room!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

The circle thing is called an embroidery hoop (sp?) You can get them in multiple sizes and colors. Check out Walmart in the cross stitch area.

This is a non-Disney..outfit that I loved..I didn't bid but I bought the fabric today... and can't wait to get it...it's it darling...

Lisa, can't wait to see what you create with this! I sincerely hope you are not trying to make this before your trip! We are all anxiously awaiting your next creation, well creations, since you promised us pictures of new stuff yesterday!

HELP!!! im working on a cow/bandana tshirt dress for dd for an upcoming church picnic. i wanted to add a ruffle to the bottom. remember up until now i have only done simple twirl skirts and pillowcase dresses, so im NOT experienced at all. anyway, i saw some really cute white ruffle trim at walmart that would be perfect. my question is this:

the top the the trim had an opening (reminded me of how bias tape looks). ive never used ruffles or trim before so please forgive me. would i just stick the hem of my dress in between the opening of the trim and straight stitch it together or do i treat it more like the bias tape, where you pin the right sides together and stitch???? does this make sense? i didnt buy the trim yet cause i wanted to ask, so sorry i dont have visuals to accompany my question.

thanks for the help!

I have used this type of ruffle trim. It was super easy. Yep, all I did was put the open part into the hem of my dress, and sewed a straight line across. It looked very nice when done. I did it on the bottom of a pillowcase dress. I was even thinking you could sew the open end closed and use it as cute shoulder straps. Not sure how that would work, but it is one of the few creative ideas I have had regarding sewing!

anyone know where I can get some of this? thanks so much...lime green is my daughters new favorite color (11yrs old) may be the only way I will get her to wear something custom if I use some of this fabric....

Oh we are going in January, so all of the layers outfits work great. I put t- shirts and jeans under almost all of her dresses last year. When it got hot, we slipped the jeans off, when it got cooler in the evenings we wore the jeans. One evening in January 2 years ago we had on hats and coats. Well fleece jacket coats, not winter coats. Mind you, this is last year when we just went to universal and Ioa and Seaworld. We stayed off site, and didn't go back in the evening except once. This trip, although off site again, we are planning on coming home for naps and CHANGING into another outfit to go back into the Disney parks. I had just started to do the whole custom idea last trip. We only had Sponge Bob dress for Universal, Cat in the Hat dress for IOA, and Nemo ( oops)overalls and a fish pillowcse dress for Seaworld. And the poor dear didn't have anything special for Busch Gardens. Well the Disney parks are easier to plan for...that is my excuse!

I love this dress. I think it is perfect! You have convinced me to get a ruffler foot. We are now on our way to Joann's. Well, we were going anyway- McCall's patterns are $1.99 (I have been waiting all week), I am now just going to spend more money :rotfl:

Hi Everyone,
I have been lurking for about a week now and decided to speak up now that I have photos to share...we'll see if I did it right! We leave in a week  and I was all set to do some iron on transfer shirts for the kids when I saw the "boutique" clothes. This thread has rekindled my fabric obsession :) As you will see, I went crazy with the Minnie heads...that's what DD wanted. I know they are simple compared to some of the incredible work here, but I've never been too good with patterns and I make jewelry and have a bunch of orders to fill right now. I attempted some hair bows for the first time too.
Here is the first one...hopefully...

Love these! And especially the brown and pink one-it is "un-expected" for Disney and it looks so cute. I am def. doing some brown and pink for fall!
