I'm sure it can't be more than 10 years. If it helps, I started sewing when I was about 10 (maybe a little older) and have been sewing for 30+ years... go ahead, do the math.



Great Job! I was just thinking instead of the ricrac above the hem, it might look cute to have it overlap the hem so the bottom of the jeans have the wavy edge. Now you know you're going to do a patchwork Minnie head tee to go with those.

If you double that 10 years, you'll be alot closer! Thanks for the idea on the ric rac, I think I will go with that. Besides that will cover up the fact that I didn't cut them even on the bottom, gotta love ric rac!!
Don't know about the Minnie tee, I'm not very good at staying in the lines, so this was a great project for me.

Ok, FESS UP!!!! Who bought the entire bolt of the sheer red dot fabric at Walmart on Shaver road??????? HMMMM???? My sister just called to see if I had bought it. She said some other dot fabric was all gone too, all evidence points to a Diser! Show yourself!

I THINK it had been marked down (?)
I didn't check Gull Road or Plainwell.
but I PROMISE, it wasn't me!
I was hunting down Wonder-Under, not fabrics.
At ninth street, I did buy up all their Wonder-Under ... Shaver was out.

Without actually seeing the designs ...
They already have heat-n-bond or Wonder-Under on the back of the design, right? ... assuming you do, just trim the design about 1/16" OUTSIDE the image (this is what will be covered by your applique/satin stitch) ... remove the paper, place it on the garment where you want it, move it around to see what you can and where ... IF you have to cut any off, gently tap the side you are NOT about to trim away (so you don't lose your placement), trim as needed to get it to fit right ... then finish pressing, satin stitch, press to smooth, done.
IF it were me doing this printed applique = I would ignore the background color "around" the edges of the design, since you won't see it after it's stitched, anyways ... I would use the same color of the "outline" of the image = like for instance if the drawing/image had a black outline, I'd use black ... that way it'll blend in a tad & help hide imperfections. .......... you COULD use the same color as the fabric you are attaching it to, but if there's a black outline to the image = the contrast of your stitches against that black will show imperfections in the stitching more, than trying to blend it in ...
That's how I did design ...

+ you could TRY a bit of each & then decide. That might be best, if you're really unsure going into it ! ... use the scraps from the part you cut off = so you don't have to rip anything out of your garment !

Thank you so much for the tips. I am going to try to take a picture of the appliqués when DH gets home. My camera is locked in my van and he took the keys! Well, he took the kids too, so I really can't complain . I have the top almost finished. I love the apron tops. I will post a pic of the pants with and without the appliqués to get some suggestions.

The inseam is just pinned because I couldn't decide on ric rac or no ric rac. I am a ric rac kind of girl and I add it to everything, so I wanted some other opinions. (Besides my husband's, who when I showed him the jeans, he said, "is that what you want them to look like, or are you going to do something else to them?") What does he know!!

I love these. I think they look great both ways, but also vote for ric rac. I like the suggestion about using it at the bottom.

I found a quaint quilt shop with the most sumptuous fabrics! I wish you could feel these I picked out. Like a sateen, or a really high thread count sheet...very nice. They were 8.99-11.99 a yard so I only got exactly what I needed to do a couple pillowcase dresses. The ribbon I chose also has a vintage look to it in a cream color.

Oh, they don't look that special in these pictures. Pooh!

Love the vintage/retro fabrics. (They are my weakness). I bought a brown with pink polka dot yesterday. I also bought a pink/brown retro diamond yesterday (I actually stopped the girl as she was getting it out of a big shipment -)

Love these -- I may have to steal your idea for fabric -- I spent 2 hours today at Hancocks trying to decide on a black and white print to go with my red and white polka dot. I walked out with 2 totally unrelated prints.

Ok - DD took time out from the Hannah Montana marathon to try on this dress for me. See - don't worry even at 7 she lets me dress her up! I did have to modify the choices though! It turned out a little big around the chest - I am making another one and I think I will make it smaller. Funny thing is that she is wearing about a size 6 now - and I used a size 4 pattern because I know they run big and the measurements matched up - but it was still big. Does it look ok - or should I find a way to tighten the chest area? Also - I was contemplating the blue bows along the last seam - what do you all think? Should I add them around? I would love ANY and ALL opinions!

So CUTE!! I vote no rick rack. Normally I would say yes to any rick rack - LOL - but these are so cute - they stand out alone!

I think it looks great! I like just the one blue bow, but either would be good.

I have been a lurker here for some time and I am so impressed with all your work! You all have inspired me to ask for a sewing machine for my birthday. I am a crazy mom who always coordinates my DD's clothes @ WDW, but it never occurred to me to go the custom route! Twice this week I have been to the fabric store (and remember I don't have a machine yet...) and I have 6 yards of hot pink tulle that are begging to be made into a pirate skirt for our Feb trip! BTW, TJ Maxx has girls sz 4-6 black w/ pink skull tights on sale for a dollar- of course all TJ's are hit or miss w/ inventory. You inspire, keep sewing...

For those of you that love the quilt store fabrics, but not the price, a lot of times the stores will put their pre-cut fat quarters on sale, you'd have to make a patchwork twirl or something along that lines. But sometimes you can get great deals when they are trying to clean out their fat quarter supply. My mom has so many of these fabrics but won't let me touch them b/c they are all "for something" whenever she has the time. Oh, well.

I love to just go to the quilt stores and see and touch all the fabric, but I have to resist buying.

Great fabrics UMama. I love the pink/chocolate combos.

OH, I went to my Walmart and they got the minnie fabric in yesterday!!! So what did I do! Bought it all!!!!!!! Now it said 12 yards and I asked the lady to measure and she said "it has never been cut" I said measure it and if it is 12 full yards I'll apologize! So she measures and it is 11 yards 16 inches!!! HMMM I knew I had it measure it for a reason. now what is my savings, probably a $1, but hey that is another yard of another fabric so every $1 counts!

Hi, I got the appplique at Walmart. They were in a circle on a panel meant for a pillow, I think. It was in the fabric section. I couldn't decide if I liked the blonde or brunette girl better, so I put both on.

Very very cute! What pattern did you use? It doesn't look too big, so I would probably leave it. That way she can wear a shirt under it also and it won't be too tight. As for the bows, hard to say, I like the one but a few more might be cute too! Or ric-rac in addition to the one bow, just a thought!

That doesn't surprise me! Do you ever get the feeling that we know more about fabric and sewing than the people working in that department? And that is saying something, since I only learned to sew about 6 wks ago!

My "12 yard" bolt had 11 and 1/2 yards. I don't think the cutter was thrilled with me for wanting it all . I think she went on break after she measured my fabric.

I am planning on the ric rac but putting it on the edge like LisaZoe said, it will cover my uneven hem that way! . But I am taking them to my mom so she can put a nice stitch through the ric rac and sew up the seams. (I'm not ready for that yet!)

The Walmart near me is a little on the small side. There have actually been times where the workers from Sporting Goods come over to cut fabric.
