Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

I thought this might be fun....

I'm wondering what kind of costumes people are making their kids for Halloween? A lot of people think it is just too early to start thinking about Halloween but if you are like me and want to make them, it's probably time to start getting some ideas.

My DS wants to be Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas, so I am going to attempt him the pinstripe suit w/the weird collar -- he is soooo excited! I'm not sure what I am going to do for DD. My son keeps saying that she could be Sally (from the movie also) but I just don't know how well she will react to it (she'll be almost 3). She loves the movie but I would have to paint her face up and spray her hair red.
clipnight2.gif

She saw the picture while I was typing and says that's what she wants to be but we'll see.

So anybody else already thinking about Halloween?

Toally thinking about Halloween... I will have to dig up my jack and sally pics for you. I was sally (that dress doesn't even fit over my head now!!! you don't happen to wear a 6, do you?)
Dh-Jack DS3 (then) Barrel. It was great, my mom (the talented artist she is) made him a maske that looked just like barrels face (you know how their masks are their faces!!) and we sprayed his hair green. You would be surprised how hard it is to find skeleton pj's at halloween time. I thought they'd be everywhere we ended up making them and cutting bones out of white fabric, which actually turned out much better-though I was going for simple.

For Sally I sewed a basic shift left it a liittle longer than knee length then cut the jagged edges and sewed them. I freeze framed like every angle of Sally available (this was a long time ago-pre my super web capabilities) and hand paited each patch so the dress was as close as possible. AS FOR JACK- you know I was never really happy w/ pin stripes cause jacks stripes are all swirly ala "the scream"...so I bought a black suit and pain stakingly painted every darned swirly stripe. We used white craft foam paper (you know what I mean) to make the bat. it may have needed some reinforcing in the back when you see it, the bats eyes were done w/ a crayon in a hot glue gun. Which didn't hold up so well over time (cracking) but lasted through halloween and then some.

I uses a white bodysuit and tights and just drew stitches on- heres the key (this only counts for those of you possibly adults/teens that wanna be sally) go to a halloween store and get this liquid scar stuff. it draws the skin in kinda like when you were a kid and you let glue dry on the back of your hand. I used this to make the stitch scars by my mouth and the scars on my chest.

The hair was a pain, cause I wanted it to look like sculpted clay and it never laid quite right, but we took a bandana and fit it to my head then unraveleld raffia and lay it out flat and hot glued then stitched it at the center part. Then we painted it w/ like a billion different colors. It really looked the part, though like I said it never laid exactly right.

I realize that this is a little elaborate for kids costumes ( though I never think anything is to dramatic for Halloween) but thought all you talented artists could see where my art really shines...tonight I will post a pic!! As a matter of fact I'm searching for an uploaded pic right now, though I don't think there is one this was pre dig. camera era.

Okay, so I've been enjoying everybody else's boutique creations for months, but I've yet to share any of mine. So, without further ado--here are the boutique Disney clothes I made for my DD who will be 15 mos. at the time of our DisneyLand vacation. These outfits have been done for at least a month, I just hadn't taken the pictures and gotten them posted...sorry!

100_3400.jpg

You know you've gone over the deep end when you've made a TWIRL skirt for a child who can't even WALK yet!:sad2: The ribbon really does go all the way across the front of the top and into the seams, it's just the way it's laying for the picture. The Minnie ears is my first applique. I've practiced on woven cottons, but I've learned it's a whole new story on stretchy knits. It wasn't too difficult though.

100_3384.jpg

A little peek of it on. I love how the ribbon ruffle on the top flits out when it's worn.:)

100_3396.jpg

Since our DL trip is at the tail-end of October, sometimes the weather can get pretty unpredictable. My goal was to make outfits that could be layered easily without taking away from the design. The front buttons look a little uneven in the picture, but they really are straight and not pinched. It's just hanging a little wonky for the photo. I didn't notice until after I got the photo posted. If any of you remeber, this is the top that got ruined by the stupid plier snap tool (DO NOT BUY ONE OF THOSE--Now that I've used it and seen the tool's design flaws, I don't see how it can possibly get a snap attached properly!) Anyway, I made several variations to the pattern one of which was to eliminate the snap entirely. I didn't like the snap anyway. Anyway...the original plan was to put a Minnie ears applique on this outfit somewhere, but after it was sewn, it just seemed "finished" to me and that an applique would almost be "too much". I don't know... what do you think Minnie applique or no Minnie applique??? Even though I *own* lots of the larger Minnie dot fabric, I special ordered the smaller Minnie dots (twice...thanks to the stupid snap tool) to look more scale on a baby. I Adopted the theory that you wouldn't want to tile a smaller bathroom with large 12" tiles, now would ya?

This is the bracelet I bought to go with the above outfits. I LOVE IT!!! I know the photo leaves much to be desired, but it was difficult to photograph to say the least. I can't tell you how incredible this bracelet is. It's polymer clay with red and black swarovski crystals. The polymer beads are *amazing*! If you notice the bead on the left has perfectly-formed tiny 3-D mickey ears that go around the perimeter of the bead..too cool! In fact, all of the polymer is 3-D absolutely NONE of it is painted--right down to Minnie's eyes! This polymer artist is amazing to say the least!

I'm having matching combo bows made to match these outfits as well.

Anyway, that's it for now. Hope you like them!!:goodvibes

This is exactly what I want to try to make. Can someone please help me make a skirt like this. Are the stripes wider at the bottom? Any general measurements? Please help me!

No, they're not wider on the bottom, they're just gathered at the top for twirl factor. I don't have directions for this and I haven't seen any freebies online, but they have a pattern ebook available on YCMT.

I have to see pics of these outfits!!!! What I have figured we will do for my DS is spray his hair white (probably several times since his hair his red) and paint his face white with the stitched black smile painted on as well. He has asked me how we will do his hand so they will look like skeleton hands and we came up with white gloves and paiting the black lines where the bones are connected.
As far DD goes, if she is Sally, what I thought I would about the dress is either try and match the material (which is doubtful) or make the dress out of a lightweight cream color material and paint the whole thing to match. It was cool here on Halloween last year (had to wear long sleeves under the Dorothy costume I made), so I thought I would paint her "stitching" on a long sleeve fitted shirt and paint stitches on some tights as well. I will spray her hair red (hers is light brown) and paint some stitches on her face. I know Sally doesn't wear a hair bow, but we can't go without one -- so she can wear her black hair bow with the skull on it.

How does that sound to you?

Elisa- I've been window-shopping on that auction site ;) and I am in heaven!!!
So sorry for the slackers not paying you! I don't think people realize the total waste of time and energy that a non-payment creates. I usually pay the minute I "win" so I won't forget.

Is there a listing of you ladies seller names? I'd love to see what y'all are selling and most likely be a buyer. If it's for a 4T girl :cutie:

OK. I've got myself a killer SEWING HANGOVER!!!! I decided I don't know how to sew after yesterday. I truly only possess the most basic of skills and have the "as long as it looks good" mentality. But not having a serger, my seams are not as pretty as I'd like them. Plus I have extreme difficulty ready an "easy" pattern. I better start getting "Super Duper Easy...Do it in 1 hour" type patterns. :rolleyes1 I've decided that sewing a seam with the two needle method looks alot better than my semi-crooked one needle straight stitch. I did my very first zipper last night. It turned out....sorta ok. good. It works. Luckily, dd has long hair....
whoo hoo i am so happy for you . how is your stuff coming? i will have to drop by in a bit and check it out..

Great jobs on the outfits posted they are all way adorable. i am trying to get the energy to sew my DD6 some outfits for our 1st trip to disneyland in oct . still haven't gotten that bug ,(but i am pretty sure with Utahmama as a friend i will in know time:cloud9: )
everyone have a spongerific day ;)

I think a hairbow is completely acceptable- she'll be like, baby sally! OH-look cor baby pjs that are red and white striped or a childs long sleeved shirt (I love repurposing goodwill finds!!). cur off the sleeves or legs and VOILA! scrunchy striped leggings, just add MaryJanes or little black boots. I remember hands were a concern for us I think we just went w/ out them (not the hands, I mean costuming them) We bought a white bald cap at a costume store (you can get them on line too, it was a cheap one, no more than 5 bucks. and used clown white for his face, I was in drama and we LOVE halloween so I ALWAYS have clown white and if your doing a whole face I recommend clown white w/ clown white powder. DD probably won't let you do her whole face, I'd concentrate on just the black stitching.-she'll be so cute it won't matter.

When we do Halloween costumes I like to use patterns as little as possible for me half the fun is finding stuff to reuse! I make a list of things I need and things that could POSSIBLY be used sometimes I can't find what I need and have to make something from scratch, sometimes I find something I never thought of that can be converted. I make my list and start searching early, like now. We usually start planning in June and start costuming in July- of course my costume is always last cause I think I just might take off a few pounds-yeah, that ever happens!!

If you haven't read, we have a large group going (I think 14) and we're doing gangsters/molls/flappers- ROARING 20's !! except DS9 who refuses to follow the crowd.
So if anyone out there has ideas, I'm still looking for a way to NOT have to buy a gun holster DH, likes authenticity so his costumes are always the most expensive...do you really need a violin case???

Can anyone pm me a list of ebay sellers???? I have not had much luck on there using the search method. Also I am looking for things for an older girl. DD 7 size 8, dd 17 ( maybe cute shirts?) she is an small to bedium shirt size& DS 5 ( size 5-6 ) I can't sew and have no idea how to use a pattern. I do have a machine, but no clue how to use it. mom bought it for e as a gift with good intentions of showing me how, but now due to health reasons is unable to do so - I woudln't even know where to start.

help we leave for disney in 58 more days!!

Had to search this out for the date, just bumping to make it easier to find next time, lol!

Do we have a time set yet? Nothing too early I hope! When I was in Toledo this weekend, it looked like there was only one Hancock's Fabric, is that right? The one right near our hotel was closed! I was NOT happy!

OK, I think I am finally going to attempt a skirt for my DD. I found some cute 4H Fair type fabric for the fair next week. I would like to do a twirl type skirt with stripes from the top to bottom. Could someone please help me or point me in the right direction? I know there were some general directions many posts ago, and I can't find them! I have a whole bucket of fabric that I have been collecting since the beginning of this thread, but have been too busy and chicken to start cutting into it...:rotfl: I have very high hopes of going to WDW in early Dec with my SIL and BIL. I am keeping my fingers crossed and figure I need to get learning and practicing in case we do get to go, so I can get all my customs done in time!!! TIA for your help.

I have directions on my bookmarks site. Link in siggy or on main page of this thread. Look under sewing/skirts/stripwork
I think the one on there makes the strips wider at the bottom, but when i made Arminda's Bambi skirt, I made them the same with all the way down. It is really very easy, but can be time consuming to sew all those strips together! I put more detailed directions on here somewhere, but I'm not sure where they are! Hmm, I guess I should have bookmarked it!

Here's my latest creation. At first, neither DD wanted it because they didn't like the Pooh fabric. But DD3 decided she would wear it. The top is one I bought and added the Pooh iron-on.

PoohOutfit2.jpg
Adorable! I love the Pooh fabric!

I called my Mom today to tell her about the smocking plates I found and to my surprise . . . guess who knows how to smock. Yeppers, my Mamma! I am so excited because she is going to teach me. We have seven months to WDW, seven park days and nine "disney" plates. I am so excited!!! I think if I can do one a month. I will have enough time to have a smocked creation for each day. Turns out it was buy one plate get one free. So, got five free plates!!! My favorite is the Wizard of Oz plate. I want to insert it onto the Dorothy costume.

My DD3 is really into costumes but the babes will be about 19 months in March. She will look adorable in her fancy smocked dresses. I am so excited.

I made a nemo sundress last night. I am planning on listing it. I had my DD try it on and she said thanks for making me a Nemo costume. I can wear it on the seashell ride. Oh no! I will have to make another one. I am going to do bows to go with because it is pretty simple.

I bought some white flip flops too. I think I will try and match the bows and shoes. I will photograph it later today.

Oh how exciting that your Mom is going to teach you!! I can't wait to see what you do! I put up some links to Smocking how to videos on the bookmarks site. Although, I haven't actually watched them yet, so I can't say if they will be helpful to anyone!

Too cute about the Nemo outfit!! How sweet of you to let her keep it!

Wow, these are adorable outfits! I love the twirl skirt! Did you have to remake the whole outfit that got the whole in it? It turned out really cute! I think an applique would look realy cute, but it looks great as it is too.
No, they're not wider on the bottom, they're just gathered at the top for twirl factor. I don't have directions for this and I haven't seen any freebies online, but they have a pattern ebook available on YCMT.

I have one, maybe two free directions on the bookmarks site for the stripwork skirts. I have bunches of patterns on there, so if anyone is looking for something, be sure to check it out. I added a layered tule skirt one the other day. Although, they don't have a picture of their finished product! :confused3 I also put up a swirly, redondo style skirt (although, if you ask me, that one is rather confusing looking!) The link is in my signature and in the origianal post on page one.

Yeah, I found that spiral skirt tutorial too... didn't make a lot of sense to me, but I don't make m yown patterns.. If anyone has a better pattern for that they'd like to share...pm me!!!

Does your sewing machine have an "overedge" stitch? I broke my serger last Christmas (sewed over the zipper foot from my sewing machine that got stuck in the fabric of the dress I was making! :headache: ) and in my desperation (crying, throwing a fit, telling dh what an idiot I am, hating myself for ruining my expensive Babylock serger, etc.) I realized that my sewing machine had an overedge stitch. It does take a little more time because it doesn't move as fast as a serger, but then again I don't have the mess of having 2 machines out.

I honestly don't think that I will ever get a serger again. I am sooooo much happier with my work not that I am doing it all on my sewing machine. Everything seems to look so much neater, inside and out! So my $800 serger is sitting in my garage and it is totally jammed. The needles won't move, the knobs won't turn!!!! I serisously messed it up, but it ended up working out because I am really happier with my results now that I don't use it! I didn't realize that my sewing machine could do that stitch and that was my main reason for wanting it. I can't stand to see the raw edges on the inside of the garment.

No overedge stitch. My new machine is the $78 Brother from Walmart. Ten simple stitches. It as simple as the ones I sewed with in Jr. High :rolleyes1 . I figured as I got better, I'd get a nice one. (I don't even know how to use a serger :upsidedow ).

I hate raw edges too. The best I could to is use pinking shears to clean them up. Grrrrr. So, if any of you see my dd in real life at WDW this Sept, don't you dare sneak a peek at the inside seams :cool2:

Question

I am thinking of making some more of this type of outfit for my Ds for our Sept. trip.
DSC_1248_5x7_7-1.jpg

It will be VERY HOT and this outfit has interfacing around the top. Maybe around 1/4 to 1/3 down plus the fabric over top of that. Hope that makes sense. Do you all think that will be too hot? Any other options. I had thought maybe just do a bias tape around the neck and arm but, that might not look very good. I am not the best sewer.

I was also thinking of making one in red with giant buttons on the front like mickey's pants. Do you think that would look good (would people get it)? Probably for evening because red is almost as hot as wearing black.

TIA!

Use the zig zag stitch so it falls right next to your seam. Next, simply trim your seam right next to the points in the zig zags. If your machine happens to have an "overlock" stitch as one of the 10, you could use that in place of the zig zag and then trim the seam the same as above. The overlock gives the seams a nice, professional-looking finish without a serger. You may find you won't need a more expensive machine for quite a while.

what if ( I do realize the pattern is sewn in half vertically) you made the top half red and the bottom black and added big yellow buttons. Then they would definitely get it.

WAIT- strike that, reverse it !!! DUH....

Funny I was just searching for ideas last night...My boys always pick their own so we'll see what they choose but I have a new baby girl that I'm so excited to dress up for halloween....

My thoughts are - I really don't want to do a princess because it's so expected and I want something different....I would like to do a tutu with the colors suggesting the character (i.e. bumble bee yellow/black, pirate red/black witch orange/purple black etc) I'm just trying to be creative on the idea but keep it simple for her...I'm hoping to do a long sleeve t-shirt, tutu, matching bow (I make bows) and tights....So it's more of a suggestion of a character but not necessarily the character...Does that make sense????

Any input would be appreciated....I would love other suggestions that would fit my idea......

I thought this might be fun....

I used Butterick 5019 very easy. I used pink for the back because the fabric store didn't have a whole lot of fabric and I liked the look of another apron style top I saw. I think it was posted by castle creations.

This pattern is easy because there are no sleeves, no collars, no gathering. You just add bias tape around the edges. You do have to make a couple button holes. My machine does a good job with that, and you can't see them so they don't have to be perfect.

Yay, no zipper. I've never done a button hole so I think i need to get over that fear! And might I say, "CUTE!!!!!!!" I just love that fabric! Where did you find it? Would you mind if I copy you? :cool2:

You'll be so busy sewing you won't have time to eat!:thumbsup2

I do love them! What talent you have! :cutie:
I've never seen such detailed polymer clay buttons. Very cool!

glorib~ I LOVE the cars shirt!! I want to make one for my DS!! Very nice!!

Hi everyone! I've been working on one last project (outfit) for someone and I've finally been able to start something for my dd. She wanted a Minnie cheer outfit, so I'm almost done with the skirt. I ran out of ribbon and rick rack this morning, so that was the end of that. LOL. I don't know what kind of top I will do, it depends on what she'd like.
I've also had two non payers lately with our favorite auction site. People think they can take forever to pay, and that you will just sit and wait. Sorry, I don't. :rotfl: I give them about 20 days to pay and that's it. It's a shame. So I had to relist the famous, look-a-like outfit that I had some complaints about making. So here goes again...:rotfl:
I will post some photos this weekend, of the cheer outfit and of my kids of the world outfit that it sitting here looking at me...LOL
Elisa~ Were you going to make that minnie outfit you showed awhile back that a little girl wore in a pagent? I would love to see if it you do!! :goodvibes

I thought this might be fun....

I bought the material already to make my DD a Belle costume. I am still trying to decide how I want to make it though... As for DS, I am still not sure :goodvibes

Adorable!!!! I love the shirt and twirl skirt together!!!! I'm right over the deepend with you! My daughter is only 3 mos old and I've already bought a custom for her trip next April!!!! (also got a smocked dress too) Scary...I'm hoping to have more for the trip by the time it rolls around. If for some reason you decide to part w/these after your trip please keep me posted. It's not easy finding these in smaller sizes.

Did you use a pattern for the 2nd outfit? If so which one?

All of it is very cute!!!!

A little peek of it on. I love how the ribbon ruffle on the top flits out when it's worn.:)

Hope you like them!!:goodvibes

everyone have a spongerific day ;)

Happy Birthday, Spongie!

Thank you! I did ok for a beginner!!!! my dd's long hair will cover a multitude of flaws ;)

I think you should make sumpin' for Jaydey to wear.

My boys are at the age too old for me to make them very much. I thought SLEEP PANTS would be nice. That way I'm not constantly making the daughter stuff and not them. I miss them being small and uncool!
