I thought this might be fun....
I'm wondering what kind of costumes people are making their kids for Halloween? A lot of people think it is just too early to start thinking about Halloween but if you are like me and want to make them, it's probably time to start getting some ideas.
My DS wants to be Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas, so I am going to attempt him the pinstripe suit w/the weird collar -- he is soooo excited! I'm not sure what I am going to do for DD. My son keeps saying that she could be Sally (from the movie also) but I just don't know how well she will react to it (she'll be almost 3). She loves the movie but I would have to paint her face up and spray her hair red.

She saw the picture while I was typing and says that's what she wants to be but we'll see.
So anybody else already thinking about Halloween?
Toally thinking about Halloween... I will have to dig up my jack and sally pics for you. I was sally (that dress doesn't even fit over my head now!!! you don't happen to wear a 6, do you?)
Dh-Jack DS3 (then) Barrel. It was great, my mom (the talented artist she is) made him a maske that looked just like barrels face (you know how their masks are their faces!!) and we sprayed his hair green. You would be surprised how hard it is to find skeleton pj's at halloween time. I thought they'd be everywhere we ended up making them and cutting bones out of white fabric, which actually turned out much better-though I was going for simple.
For Sally I sewed a basic shift left it a liittle longer than knee length then cut the jagged edges and sewed them. I freeze framed like every angle of Sally available (this was a long time ago-pre my super web capabilities) and hand paited each patch so the dress was as close as possible. AS FOR JACK- you know I was never really happy w/ pin stripes cause jacks stripes are all swirly ala "the scream"...so I bought a black suit and pain stakingly painted every darned swirly stripe. We used white craft foam paper (you know what I mean) to make the bat. it may have needed some reinforcing in the back when you see it, the bats eyes were done w/ a crayon in a hot glue gun. Which didn't hold up so well over time (cracking) but lasted through halloween and then some.
I uses a white bodysuit and tights and just drew stitches on- heres the key (this only counts for those of you possibly adults/teens that wanna be sally) go to a halloween store and get this liquid scar stuff. it draws the skin in kinda like when you were a kid and you let glue dry on the back of your hand. I used this to make the stitch scars by my mouth and the scars on my chest.
The hair was a pain, cause I wanted it to look like sculpted clay and it never laid quite right, but we took a bandana and fit it to my head then unraveleld raffia and lay it out flat and hot glued then stitched it at the center part. Then we painted it w/ like a billion different colors. It really looked the part, though like I said it never laid exactly right.
I realize that this is a little elaborate for kids costumes ( though I never think anything is to dramatic for Halloween) but thought all you talented artists could see where my art really shines...tonight I will post a pic!! As a matter of fact I'm searching for an uploaded pic right now, though I don't think there is one this was pre dig. camera era.
...t.
The ribbon really does go all the way across the front of the top and into the seams, it's just the way it's laying for the picture. The Minnie ears is my first applique. I've practiced on woven cottons, but I've learned it's a whole new story on stretchy knits. It wasn't too difficult though.
Even though I *own* lots of the larger Minnie dot fabric, I special ordered the smaller Minnie dots (twice...thanks to the stupid snap tool) to look more scale on a baby. I Adopted the theory that you wouldn't want to tile a smaller bathroom with large 12" tiles, now would ya?

and I am in heaven!!!
I've decided that sewing a seam with the two needle method looks alot better than my semi-crooked one needle straight stitch. I did my very first zipper last night. It turned out....sorta ok. good. It works. Luckily, dd has long hair....
)
I have very high hopes of going to WDW in early Dec with my SIL and BIL. I am keeping my fingers crossed and figure I need to get learning and practicing in case we do get to go, so I can get all my customs done in time!!! TIA for your help.
I also put up a swirly, redondo style skirt (although, if you ask me, that one is rather confusing looking!) The link is in my signature and in the origianal post on page one.
) and in my desperation (crying, throwing a fit, telling dh what an idiot I am, hating myself for ruining my expensive Babylock serger, etc.) I realized that my sewing machine had an overedge stitch. It does take a little more time because it doesn't move as fast as a serger, but then again I don't have the mess of having 2 machines out.
