OK, I'm back. Looks like I have a few pages to read thru. Anyway, I finished my applique. Did I mention I hate appliqueing? :rotfl2: I had made this dress, oh 200 or so pages back. I always thought the top was too plain. So I added to it. First pic is the original and then the updated version. The dress in the second pic needs ironed. Don't look at that. This was also the dress I used to learn how to made my insides look better and how to double stitch the top to the bottom. Some of you helped me with that. That was a late night!

Hello Ladies & Tom -

Your work is great and so creative!!! I've been looking at the thread. I'm thinking about getting into sewing all of you are a inspiration.

Hope you don't mind me admiring your work, until I get the nerve to try something on my own.

I've been looking at sewing machines, I would love any recommendations from all of you of what is a good machine to purchase.

Thank you!!

Brenda

I almost bought some of those iron ons and yes they had boyish ones. They had Mickey, Cars and Buzz Lightyear.

I didn't buy them because I didn't have my coupon with me. I was worried because on the back it said they weren't permanant and I didn't know what they meant by that. I was afraid they would come off after one washing.

Have you washed yours yet twob4him? If they are working out well I will go back tomorrow with my coupon! They are really cute.

Oh thanks for being more specific on what they had...I really wasnt focusing on that. I did see that on the back too. I think what it means is that if you keep washing it over and over it will eventually wash off. I havent washed mine since its a gift... but I did tell the mom to handwash and drip dry inside out. Hopefully that will help! :goodvibes

Are you having trouble in applique world? Did you not get the memo that all is well and good in applique world...tsk, tsk...where's that Disney spirit...:rotfl:

Oh, I wish I could applique well. I use heat-n-bond lite and stablizer on the backs. I satin stitch, using about .5 width and loosen the tension a bit. I have thread from Coats & Clark, but it keeps breaking. Maybe I need better thread. I also don't understand how you get your thread so close together. I went over my applique twice and it still could use another round.

Also, sometimes my stitches don't connect. It "misses". So instead of a zig-zag, it's a straight stitch. It doesn't happen all the time, but enough to notice. Why would this be?

It used to do that to me too. My problem was the stabilizer. I wasn't using any. And it would do this weird straight stitch...And I was like, what the ?!??!?!?!?.. My machine has a applique stitch and I use that. My satin stitch was a nightmare.

Now if you are just starting out don't buy anything toooo expensive. get used to sewing then branch out to a better machine. Learn to do all the basics then you will find out what you really need in a sewing machine in the future. I think everyone has different wants in a machine.

I've been lurking :surfweb: on this thread (and the entire DIS site really) for a few months... I obsessively check this thread multiple times a day! OMG everyone's designs are just wonderful! I'm super impressed....

All the wonderful work, inspired me to dust off the sewing machine (which by the way, has been out of its box exactly once when I took a one day sewing class and made a blanket) So, I'm a beginner if there ever was one....

Couple weeks ago, attempted some applique, and as soon as I find my camera I'm going to snap away and share... although they are pretty simple... nothing compared with the great outfits I've seen here!

For my next trick, going to attempt to follow a pattern for the very very first time. I'm betting I'm going to need TONS of support... so here I am!

On a related note, I've got an extra impediment to my sewing... my one year old boy has decided that the sewing machine noise scares him, so while I've been appliquing today, he's been attached to my leg... crying in fear. :confused3 (Now that would make a funny picture!!)

Anwhoo... going to try and stay out of lurk mode for a bit!!!

Thanks for the comments.

Let me tell you what kind of machine I like, and why.

DW has 3 sewing machines, and 1 serger. She used each one for different reasons.
The one that I feel the most comfortable with has a speed control lever (I tend to "drive too fast" and I get off track!; this also MAKES you take your time for applique work), and a needle stop in the down position option (makes turning corners easier, for me). I also like the drop in bobbin feature, much quicker to change bobbins.
As far as it having millions of decorative stitches and the such, unless you plan on using all of them, you probably will only use 4 to 5 at the most.

So I say stay basic, but with a few extras.

Of course this is from a somewhat newbie to this whole thing, but I thought I would at least give my two cents.

HTH!

I really like my Brother cs6000i. It does the one step buttonhole and GREAT applique work cuz you can adjust the width and the density of the zigzag. You can get it at Wally World for $200.

I hate appliqueing!!

That's all I have to say right now.

Your post had me rolling on the floor! :rotfl:

That dress is almost as cute as she is!! Good job! :cheer2:

Aw shucks. Thanks Deann!

Here are some photos of my DD in her dress!
Wow, and I thought the dress was pretty!!

I was able to put some shirts together for my dd and my niece for our trip, but they are not worthy of posting esp. w/the stuff I have seen posted on here.

Please post them!! I like to see the stuff that's not "ebay worthy"!! It makes the rest of us realize that we don't have to sew perfectly to make a cute outfit.

Since I am new here can you direct me to bookmarks you are talking about.

The link for the bookmarks can be found in the first post in this thread and in teresajoy's signature (she found most of them, gathered them all up, and organzed them for us!). I'll add the link to my siggy, too so it'll be easier to find.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the prayers and best wishes...We aprreciate them all.. Our Pediatrician called (She is on vacation this week and not only gave us her cell phone number but has called us ever day to check in) It looks like we are going for and EEG next week and probably an MRI...

Heather - PT stands for physical therapy...

I'll keep praying- my heart aches for you.

Ok here it is.. I found this dress at the thrift store for my dd (11) and thought it would make a great cruise dress. I added the sailor collar and the applique of symbol of the DCL. How does it look? Do you think I should add anything to the front and if so what? It is for an older girl so she doesn't want it too frilly or babyish as she would say. It was hard to explain why I made this dress to her since the cruise is a suprise!

I think it's adorable!! If you want to add something to the front, a little red appliqued Mickey off to the side would be cute.

OMG OMG OMG!!! :yay: First off, thanks LadyRob for posting the website. I have alot of instructions in my shopping cart on that site ready to be purchased! :thumbsup2

Before you buy any of those, make sure you check teresajoy's bookmarks. It has free tutorials for many different kinds of skirts, dresses, appliques, pretty much everything!

A little off topic, but check out how cute this is...

I sound like a broken record talking about teresajoy's bookmarks, but I found the link to this dress in there last week and I LOVE it!! I wish my hubby wore more shirts like that so I could tear it up!

I love that cuties fabric and I really like how the applique looks on the top of the dress. Great job!

Oh my gosh, that's hilarious!! My daughter was afraid of the vacuum at that age. I wish my son was so I'd have an excuse not to use it!

ballle_98- I love all of the outfits you made!! I'm glad we got to see some pics of them! Too bad DD8 won't wear her tank dress. You know, I have a 4 year old that's very tall for her age.... ;)

Thank you for the feedback .

I'm busy at work and planning my next trip to WDW for my bday over Labor Day weekend. So I think when I get back I will get a machine and see what I can do.

Thanks again!!
Brenda

So, if there is anyone out there named Audrey that likes cows...let me know...LOL:rolleyes1

Oh you know that is my girl!!!!! I have the biggest smile on my face!!

I checked my manual and the satin stitch and applique stitch seem exactly the same. Only difference is it says to loosen the tension for the satin stitch. No mention of tension for the applique. Does anyone loosen the tension?

Another difference is the applique stitch says to baste the applique to the fabric before zig-zagging. Does anyone do this?

Enjoy!

I can't believe I am saying this, but I am headed out to the fabric store!

There is a sporting goods store right next door, I might have to pop in there when I am done to boost back my testosterone level!

Great things everyone is posting!

Keep up on the good work, and very inspiring ideas!

So funny! You sound like my DH. When he goes into the fabric store with me and starts looking around, he jokes about "They might revoke my
man-card for this!"

I really like my Brother cs6000i. It does the one step buttonhole and GREAT applique work cuz you can adjust the width and the density of the zigzag. You can get it at Wally World for $200.
I forgot to mention that the Brother CS600i also has the speed control lever and the needle stop in the down position mentioned by princessleighsdaddy. It really is a great little machine for the money.

Elastic thread help
I finally convinced my mom to get some elastic thread to make a dress for my DD. But when she used it she said it kept breaking and knotting up. She has been sewing for over 40 years but never with this thread. She thinks it is probably her machine since it is close to 40 years old. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Jill

I have a Janome 4800 that I love love love! It is awesome and I have been happy with it from day 1!

I bought it 5 years ago, so I am sure that by now there is an even better model. I have been super happy with the brand though and I felt like I got a lot for my money. It has an overedge stitch that I started using when I broke my serger last Christmas. It works so well that I don't think I will even worry about getting my serger fixed. I can do everything on my sewing machine!
