Ok, On our last 2 trips to Disney, my kids were so disappointed that the characters could not talk. Imagine from a child's view, you meet your favorite Characters, and you're talking to them, and they don't respond. My kids were pretty bummed about this :guilty: . My oldest DD knows why, but i have a 6yr old and a 4yr old, and a 2yr old who just does'nt understand why they can't talk. The other day my 6yr old said "I'm so glad we are going to Disney soon, I just hope the Characters talk to me this time". I honestly cannot give my kids a good reason as to why they can't talk, so I really need some advice, I need something to tell them so that they are not disappointed on this trip and they understand why they can't talk. :confused3 I think kids would have a more magical time if the characters talked to them. Has anyone else had this problem with young children? Thanks!

I never bothered giving my dd a reason...just told her that well, they don't talk. Maybe you could tell them that they would have to talk to so many people that they would get laryngitis. So they don't talk to anyone. That the princesses don't talk to as many people and that's why they are allowed to talk.

My kids never questioned this either but I remember someone on here saying that the characters don't talk because there are kids there from many different countries who don't speak English. Since the characters only speak English they do not talk so as not to offend anyone since you can't tell by looking at the kids whether or not they speak English. Maybe you could say the Princesses talk because they are from many different countries and are able to speak different languages. :wizard:

I never questioned why they don't talk. But my brother did.

My Mom told him "Well honey, they are cartoons right? Well a cartoon needs an animator to draw him talking. Since they are here with you, the animators can't draw them talking."

It worked. I don't know why though! LOL! But it worked. My brother just accepted that.

When he asked another time she told him it was like the comics, and there were no white bubbles with words being drawn so they could not talk.

It was such an interesting way of dealing with the problem. I guess my Mom had been thinking about it for a while because she pulled that answer our without skipping a beat! :rotfl2:

Them talking would put my 4 year old over the edge! She is terrified of them as it is, I can only imagine if they said something to her.....OY!

Really? Wow!

Greeters usually tell children that the characters are saving their voices because they would lose them if they talked to everyone. (although that wouldn't explain why the face characters do talk)

I told my boys when they were very young that the characters aren't allowed to talk to the kids, because that would just take up too much time. They believed it...they're 10 and 8 now and still haven't questioned it. I'm starting to wonder if my 10 year old is on to the whole thing and isn't saying.

I used to tell them that in order to come from cartoon land to real life land they have to leave their voices behind. My kids still joke about that. Actually we've gotten some great interaction without words. Our last trip Mickey kept pointing to my DD's field hockey emblem. Apparently Mickey played field hockey.

Maby try telling them that the charaters cant talk because they would be talking to, to many people and they would get sick and the princesses can talk because princesses never get sick.
But the all the characters can talk on stage becuase there are talking to every1 at the same time! ;)

Maby they should put a tape recorder in the costum and thhey have a button to press so the character can talk lol :)

My DD never asked... I figured, "Don't ask, don't tell". She now is old enough to know the truth about why the characters don't talk!

The best interaction usually comes from the characters when they are "just fooling around" with the kids.

Why not tell them that since the characters are all so playful, they like to try to make you smile and laugh by playing with you and being silly and it's a game to try to make you smile without talking. This way, the kids may even get into it more and act more playful with the characters themselves.

The princesses tend to be more serious, so if they ask why they talk you could tell them it is because they usually have important princess business to talk about with the kids.

Hope this helps!

Wow, some of these are pretty clever! I'll try to remember them when I bring my kids to WDW (uh, when I have kids, that is, lol).

My oldest ds has never asked! But I have a friend who's ds was bothered by the fact that they didn't talk. She told him they had to save their voices for their movies! :flower:

Neither of my children ever asked why they didn't talk. Maybe it's because they've been going since they were 2 (at least every other year) and it just never occurred to them; who knows!? They have had GREAT interaction with the non-talking characters, so maybe that took their mind off of the not talking.

What great ideas you have all come up with!! I have a very smart 4 yr old niece that's coming with us on our next trip, and I'll now be prepared when she asks why Pooh won't talk!!

Just tell them it is because Disney made them bigger (like the mice and such) and their voices didn't get any bigger so we just cannot hear them! :cool1:
or tell them it uses more imigination to figure out what they want to say without words. :wizard:
Maybe time for a little lesson by telling the kids that you learn more by listening and the characters want to learn as much as they can from their new friends. ::MickeyMo

Oh My Gosh! You guys are so creative. I swear I would have never thought of such great excuses. Thanks!

Yeah, she is terrible about the Characters! And everything else for that matter...bugs, bees, birds, dogs, cats, wind, you name it, she is screaming about it. She LOVES Disney though, just as long as we stay clear of Mickey and friends!
