Anyone have any good suggestions for kids books that deal with cancer? My MIL was diagnosed a week ago. Very soon she will begin her treatment and I am looking for something that my 3 year old and I can read that will help explain the process.

Thanks! :hippie:

I don't have any suggestions for you, I just wanted to say I'm sorry your family is going thru that and give you a .

Call your local library & ask what they recommend. I'll bet the children's librarian will have some suggestions for you. :)

Thanks for the hugs and good thoughts!

I never thought about calling the library, that is a great suggestion. Thank you!

Unfortunately I know all too much about this. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma 10 days before our twins were born, and passed away just after they turned three.

This is one of the books I used to hlp my kids understand. If you look at the bottom of the page, there are a bunch of other good suggestions in the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section.

Another good place to ask is a local hospital, especially a children's hospital.

alamode, so sorry for your loss.

At age 3, I would really just give the basics, like she is sick. If they ask questions, answer them in a way they can understand. Let them come to you with any further questions, but don't offer any more than they ask for. They really don't need to know details as an adult does. When I was 5, my sister was injured and became a quadrapalegic. I was simply told for a while she was sick. I couldn't comprehend any other details, just sick and whether or not the person would get better or not. As I got older, I asked more detailed questions, and was answered in a way that was age appropriate for me to understand. So, I'd keep it simple.

I agree with happymommy. I think that cancer is about a 3 year old's head. Heck, it is practically above mine. Simple facts, like nanny isn't feeling well, we have to take her to the doctor, she has a belly ache may be all a small child like that needs. JMO of course.

Good thought for you MIL. Cancer sucks.
