Kids and therapies ( speech, OT etc)

My 7-year-old DD is in speech therapy. She has problems saying R's and has a lisp. I kept thinking when she was younger that she would eventually grow out of it. Still hasn't happened. She started speech therapy half-way through Kindergarten with the school speech therapist. A year later, I discussed the fact that maybe there was a physical problem with her pediatrician and he said that she needs one-on-one therapy instead of it being with 3 other kids as it is in school. So we started private speech therapy about 7 months ago and she is doing better. We just have to stay on her because if we don't she will slip back into saying her R's wrong- like a W. I just wish saying it the right way would become second nature instead of it being a concentrated effort each time.

That link that I posted on the frst page is the cheapest place to but Chewys that Ive found. If I buy them at the therapist they are $12!!

There is a great catalog called ablilitations www.abilitations.com
that has a lot of great things for kids with special needs even SID.

just a friendly bump on the thread :)
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Just a word of encouragement to all dealing with diff. therapies for their children. I know it can be stressful. This thread is a great idea - nice to have a sounding board and support from others who understand the system.

My DS was in an early intervention, special needs program in pre-school and kindergarten for speech. He was in the bottom 5 percent for his age on some of his tests.

I had to fight my share of battles to get him the placements I felt were best for him - we had some really helpful folks who were involved with his treatment and others who I felt were working against us.

He just finished 2nd grade and has been released from all special services. His teacher this year did not even realize that we had an IEP and intensive speech services just a couple of years earlier.
He is doing really well, although I think he may still have some processing delays - but apparently nothing that he can't compensate for.

We're not in the thick of it anymore - but will gladly stop in and offer any help or encouragement that I can.

Hi guys, today is the first day of my son's "camp" so wanted to wish you all a happy summer. I know it's a stressful time for me with my DS's issues but we do manage some great times.

Hi Folks,

My daughter just finished her 3rd year of speech. She has problems with past tense irregular verbs and some compound words. Her speech therapist said that if she continues to progress, next year will probably be her last.

Her first 2 years of speech, she had group therapy. Did not like that at all. It was very distracting for her. This last year, it was one on one, which is a lot better, or is for her.

Remember, parents, practice good speech habits:D
