Kidney Dialysis while cruising

I know someone that has three kidney dialysis sessions a week. He would like to know if Disney (or any other cruise line if needed) is set up to handle people that are on dialysis. His current schedule is Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. So even a three (one session) or four (two sessions) night cruise would be affected.

Plus if we were to stay at a Disney resort for a short time before the cruise, how do you go about setting up some sessions when traveling to another state?

Thanks,

The cruise lines themselves aren't set up to do dialysis, it's usually a vendor like Dialysis at Sea (www.dialysisatsea.com) who set it up. You can check their site for when and where they're cruising. I'm sure there are a few other companies out there as well.
Good luck!
Michael

Go to the dis"abilities" part of this forum. There you may find your answers. Most cruiselines are not set up to accomadate such a big need. The medical area is small and in most cases can only accomidate minor issues. I think it would be a cool idea for someone to start a cruiseline with medical staff to perform things of this nature, including chemo. I know I would be the first to throw in my name badge and join this staff. "cruizen while workin" is what I would call it. Good luck.;)

What kind of dialysis is your friend on?

My Mom started out on Hemo dialysis 3 times a week and later was switched to perionetal dialysis which can be done at home.

My dad had checked into www.dialysisatsea.com and found that they would deliver all the supplys she needed to the dock. I have read that they do have some hemodialysis set up on those cruises but the number is limited.

The Cruise lines that I have seen that do the dialysis cruises are Royal Carribean and Holland American.

It is my dad that is on Kidney Dialysis, and if there are different kinds related to this type of dialysis, I hate to say this but I wouldn't know what specific type his is for. I did look at the "dialysis at sea" web site and will try to get hold of them, after I get more infomation from my folks. I was surprised that my dad brought this up, it was just Saturday that he asked and I wonder if he even mentioned that he is interested in trying something like a cruise with my mom.

Thanks to all of you that have responded to this.

If your dad is doing 3 times a week, he is doing Hemodialysis and he would need to go on a cruise with a company like Dialysis at Sea. I don't think they do DCL, but I know they do some Royal Caribbean sailings. There is a Harley Davidson group that pays for dialysis patients to go these on cruises. Hogs on the highseas

My friend on chemo, her doctor set it up to have chemo in another state. Maybe there is a way to do Disney and do the dialysis in a neighboring hospital in the Orlando area? The park sounds more doable for someone needing to be close to serious medical facilities.

Good luck.

What a wonderful thing that group is doing. I am duly impressed.

Hello-I am dialysis RN, I have worked in dialysis for 12 years. As far as setting up dialysis on a cruise, it sounds like you are headed in the right direction-I have had 2 patients go on a cruise & they enjoyed it thoroughly!!

When travelling to another state, you can set it up yourself or have someone at your family member's dialysis center assist with arrangements (usually a social worker). At some point, your dad's center will need to send information to the visiting unit in order to be accepted as a pt.

The company I work for has lots of dialysis centers in Florida & California, and nationwide. You can also call "Guest Services" at 1-800-244-0680 to find a center that would work for your dad. I recommend calling as soon as possible, that your dad be flexible with his days & times (increases his chance of "securing a spot").

Places like Florida, that have a high volume of vacationers, are used to accomodating visitors.....however, planning ahead makes it easier.

I hope that helps!!:)

Orlando Regional Medical Center, in downtown Orlando, has a nice dialysis unit. They are really nice there, I highly recommend them
