Kid-friendly shampoo for flaky scalp??

DD has eczema and very dry skin. Her scalp has always been dry, but lately it's just terrible. And since she's in 6th grade, she's VERY bothered by it.

It's NOT dandruff -- she doesn't have the little white flakes all over her shoulders - LOL! She has huge flakes that itch terribly.

We've tried a few special shampoos, but the medicated ones burn her sensitive skin. My hairdresser recommended Sebulex(??), and I looked it up on the web only to find that it is NOT for people with eczema.

Please help! TIA!

Both of my kids get eczema. I would probably consider seeing the dermatologist for a recommendation/script if I were you.

I use Aquaphor on DD's skin and it works the best for her. So, I suppose if I was in your predicament and it was going to take a few days to get into the dr., I would consider rubbing Aquaphor on DD's scalp overnight and then washing it out in the morning prior to school.

Also, be warned that bathing frequently will dry out skin and make eczema worse. You may be making things worse with frequent hair washing.

Good Luck!

ETA: In the meantime, I would be using a very mild soap (maybe baby shampoo?) because you want to preserve as much of DD's natural body oils as possible.

I have eczema, too. When I was diagosed years ago, I didn't have my DR. look at my scalp. Last year I went to a new Dr., and she looked at my scalp. I had white flakes that wouldn't go away with any kind of dandruff shampoo. She said I have psoriasis (I have no red scaly areas) and she gave me a script for some oily stuff that I have to rub in my scalp for overnight, and wear a shower cap over it. It's a real PTA, but the "dandruff" that I have had for years went away completely after 2 weeks.

I would see her Dr. for a script shampoo or treatment.

My daughter has extreme problems with her scalp. Her ped. dermatologist recommended a shampoo called DHS zinc. Its OTC, but its often kept behind the counter. If you ask your pharm. about it, they will be able to point you in the right direction.

It works really well, but it doesnt have any conditioner in it. I usually place it on her scalp and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I take a 2 in 1 like suave for kids and use that on the long part of the hair and the back of the head. It works really well, but I find if you discontinue use, it comes right back.

HTH. :)

What about T Gel by Neutrogena? Get a good lather on her scalp, leave it there for several minutes, rinse. Then you can use a nice smelling conditioner. Works good when my daughters eczema flares. Clears it right up.

Very interesting. My DS22 was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis several years ago, which causes red scaly patches everywhere--scalp, legs, chest, nose. He has used a myriad of medications and shampoos and nothing has helped. He has suffered a lot of teasing about his terrible dandruff.

I"m going to suggest that he see a new dermatologist. I have wondered if he actually has psoriasis. We have a lot of autoimmune illnesses in our families and I understand that psoriasis can be related to that. Hmmm, lots to think about here...

I use DHS Conditioning Rinse with Panthenol. The dermatologist recommended it because most conditioners have fragrance and that makes my scalp blister and/or flake. This is fragrance free. It does have dye, as it is peach colored, but it has never bothered me, so it must be mild. The fragrance free aspect is WONDERFUL!!!!

I order mine from Walmart's pharmacy. It's OTC, but they don't keep it in stock. It only takes a day to come in and costs less than $8 for decent size bottle. If your DD has scalp problems, try this too. Getting a good shampoo won't completely help if you follow it up with an irritating conditioner.

My hairdresser just recommended Nioxin for DS5 bc he has bad flaking in his hair, I refer to it as cradle crap still bc it has that same look and feel to it, it isnt all gone but it is much better, I mix it in with his regular shampoo.

My daughter had that too. It took forever to get rid of.

My pediatrician said to stop using the kid-friendly shampoo!

After trying medicated of all sorts, I just started using my 2in1 Panteen on her and rinsing with fresh water from the tap (not the bath). It's the only thing that worked for us.

I have psoriasis and my derm prescribed this. It is a PITA to use but it really does work. I was completely flake-free for the first time in years! I think the "brand name" is Derma-Smooth.

I have also used Nixion products and they do help.

DermaDoctor Born To Be Mild is also good for flare-ups on the face/arms/chest/back, etc.

I was going to say Neutrogena or Nixoral (sp?) - they are usually next to each other (near Selsun Blue, Denorox, etc.).

This is excatly what my DD15 uses, the dermatologist recommended it, and our local pharmacy carries it behind the counter as well. It works wonders, and she does use a conditioner as well afterwards because she has long curly hair and it tends to try it out a bit. good luck!:thumbsup2

My 14 year old ds has a terribly flaky scalp. He lives with his dad, but visits here frequently.I don't have control over what he does at his dad's house, but I'm doing my best to instill healthy habits here. Does it help /hurt to comb/brush/finger rub his hair gently before he washes it? Should he comb it more or less during the day? Should he use a conditioner and if so rinse/leave-in? Thanks

THANK YOU! I had no idea that there was a conditioner for this shampoo. I will look for it next time I am out!

Thanks so much!
