Kick'n It at Kidani (aka Am I Becoming a Resort Snob?)Final Update 8/20 p.54

Welcome eandesmom! So you can definately relate to my world! That's why we had to go the EXACT week we did - Soccer. State cup, ODP, ODP camp, Preseason highschool, and club tryouts! Yes, DS 16 was extremely disappointed when he could not play in the tournament. Thank you for your kind comments! At first he took it really well, but than one of the dads starting ribbing him about what a waste of money it was, blah, blah, blah. Then he got so angry :headache:cause he couldn't play. I am not exactly sure what the dad said, but I didn't make a big deal out of it. The GOOD news is I took him back to the ortho surgeon after we got home and she did clear him to play. His ODP team advanced to the next round and he was able to play. He also tried out for a new club team and made that. So he is back to feeling fine. The stress fracture bothered him for about 6 weeks. The biggest mistake we made was in delaying the diagnosis because he was fine at first and then he refused to stop playing for state cup. He actually had the MRI, but went ahead and played because the ortho MD had not looked at it yet. :rolleyes1

I hope your DSD gets to go to the regional camp. DS goes to the first camp in about 2 weeks, so we'll see if he makes regional.

I hope she gets to go too. It will mean no family trip this summer but that's ok, we can do day trips :) I've been whining but it's purely selfish, I want to plan something and am sad about not having something to look forward in the near term but...I'm thrilled for her. I'd like to know soon though and I can only imagine what it's like for her!

I hear you on the delayed diagnoses...you want to listen to them and not overreact but....she's got 2 gimpy fingers as a result. One softball break and one basketball, both of which were minor fractures assumed to be jams. Nothing major, just not as pretty as they could be!

I'm so glad to hear he is cleared to play and hopefully the new club is a good fit. That is awful about the other dad, other parents can make me so mad sometimes! We just went through that when my DS10 was testing for his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. One of the other children didn't pass the written, which means you are out. The dad went OFF about how she'll quit and never come back and blah blah blah blah. Incredibly poor sportsmanship, the exact opposite of the philosophy of TKD (never quit no matter what) and he was so loud, in front of all the candidates that everyone heard. It was awful!

So yep, I hear you on the schedule. Methinks you were lucky to find a week that worked at all! That's wonderful! :)

I am loving your TR. Kidani is just gorgous and your nephew is adorable. I am cracking up that we've not seen the teens yet but, if you read my TR....you'll see I can relate! EMH seriously saved our trip. We had our time...and teen time...and they were definitely on west coast time. Next time I'll do what you did. Leave them in bed. DSD was too young this trip and DSS may never have left the cabin otherwise but next time I think will be different. I would love to be able to let each of them bring a friend but as a family of 6, we run out of room in the resort room. If we do our next trip with my MIL and her DH, we could only add one more and still fit and I hate to have to pick who gets to bring a friend. :( Kind of nice that they were all boys...they can "kind of" share.

EE at night is AMAZING. Since we were on EMH time, almost all our "big" rides were at night. Seeing the tree of life as you go up EE is mind bogglingly beautiful. And a little freaky as you really realize how high up you are! That part (high up and outside) freaked out DSD...it's funny what kids like and don't. She could ride Dinosaur a million times though.

You need two reports, Mary Ellen.... one for you three and one for the teens! Looks like you have two separate family vacations going on!! :rotfl:

Good idea letting LJ cool off at the pool... it looks "AWESOME!"

Wonder if the boys listened and got those FPs??

COUNT ME IN!

I've caught up with your trip report this morning and love it. The pictures are great.

I'm ready for another post...:thumbsup2

Btw- L J is the man for tackling EE

DiningPlanDevastor.......I LOVE that name. I am going to call your DPD for short. Welcome to my TR. Glad you are all caught up and that you like the pics. I will posting again tonight and I hope to finishe out the day in that post (which may take awhile ).

I am totally keeping my fingers crossed for her!!

Yeah. I knew I had to take him for an eval when he was waking up at night with pain. Major red flag!

I'm so glad to hear he is cleared to play and hopefully the new club is a good fit. That is awful about the other dad, other parents can make me so mad sometimes! ........

Thanks. Your story about that dad was disgraceful! :sad2:

We were lucky to get that week. Between planning ahead for DVC and planning for the kids schedules....yuck!

Kidani was beautiful. And the teens.....we actually did start seeing them. Our younger DS14 will start hanging out with us real soon!

I have to ride EE at night! Just Have To! Maybe I better put that an a bucket list!

Haha! :rotfl: They do need their own TR, but it would not be nearly as exciting as mine! I promise, the teenagers will make an appearance in the next post!

Really enjoying your trip report! Thank you for posting your beautiful pictures-we leave in 5 weeks for a stay in Kidani with our daughter and her husband. Looking forward to the rest of the report!
(we zoom through Middletown on our way to our place in OC! And our daughter loved Dutch Wonderland when she was little!) :)

I just found your trip report (after going back to update mine from Feb. (shameful - I know)). I am enjoying it and subbing. You have me looking forward to my 2 day stay at Kidani in early Sept. The pictures of the pool look great. I hope the weather is nice so we will be able to swim then.

SLM - Welcome! !! 5 Weeks!!!! Awesome! You will  it! On day 3 I will be posting some interesting Kidani Pics.

My kids loved DW when they were little, too. And I live VERY close to the first exit on Rt. 1 after you cross the C&D canal on your way to OC. Walking distance actually! So wave the next time you drive by!

Hi BigDog - Welcome!!! Thanks for subbing. I can't imagine anyone NOT liking Kidani. The pool was great and I'm sure you'll get to enjoy it in Sept!

I really want to get this update in tonight and I didn't want to start so late. But,.....better late than never. My DS16 is learning to drive. He has had his permit for a little over a month. I am the primary teacher. But, here's the deal... He HAS to learn to drive stick because both my DH and I have 5 speed manual transmission cars. Smart planning, I know. :sad2: Once he learns to drive my car, I will be getting a new car. :thumbsup2But it is essential that he can drive it, because if I decide to get an automatic (which I may.... I do practically qualify as a senior citizen) I don't want him to think he can drive MY new car cause its easier. Get my drift! So our driving lesson delayed my plans to get an early start on this update.

That and I am obsessing about my quickie September trip. DH and I are going for free dining. I have already made my ADR's, but now I am seriously considering doing the DxDP. So I went online to get an idea of what breakfast/lunch and signature meals are still available.

So now that I am completely off topic.....let's get started again.......
When we left off DH, LJ, and I were heading back to the villa. We were going to shower, change, and head into the MK to meet the teens. Since it was still early and there was no time crunch I decided to try out the jacuzzi tub. Ahhhhhhh! Heaven. I used the one at Vero Beach last summer, but never had time at SSR. This was a nice treat cause this tub and bathroom were so AWESOME!

After everyone was dressed, fluffed, and puffed we decided we would take the bus to MK. I don't know the exact time, but I think it was somewhere around 4pm. As we were walking to the bus I had one of these moments:idea: I remembered that I never heard back from DS 16 about whether he decided to leave MK. :scared:So I sent him a quick text. Just as I did the MK bus pulled up. DH and LJ got up to get on as my reply was coming in. It said....We are on the way back

Ayyyyyy Karumba! Good thing I sent that text when I did. The Kidani gods were looking down on me. I called to LJ and DH, "Don't get on the bus. the boys are on their way back" LJ was a little disappointed because he knew it meant we had to wait and all leave together. Oh well :rolleyes1 I tried to take it in stride. We would just drive to the Contemporary.

So LJ and I went to visit the gift shop and then all three of us went to visit the savannah.

Here's a cute little pic I took in the gift shop. I took some other gift shop pics but I can't find them right now. Maybe they're in day 3!

Wait....here's the gift shop pictures......

DisneyJune2009179.jpg

I loved these plants. If I didn't think it would be such a hassle to get one of them home, I would have bought one right away.

DisneyJune2009180.jpg

Here is a picture of LJ and I talking to one of the guides. She is from South Africa and this was her second visit to WDW. They asked her to come back when Kidani opened. She came in March and goes home in December. I wish I could remember her name.

DisneyJune2009177.jpg

Now what do you think this equipment was being used for???????

DisneyJune2009161.jpg

DisneyJune2009181.jpg

Would you believe they were filming some type of promo vidoe for DVC. That film crew was around the lobby and near the pool ALL WEEK! I was surprised at the amount of equipment and personnel that was required for filming the shortest segments. Not that I paid that much attention to what was going on, but most of the time there was no filming going on....just set up and standing around........ Continued next post.......

So when everyone was reassembled we headed out to find the car in the parking garage. I actually think we had a decent spot in Timon 4 :thumbsup2We told Ellie to take us to the Contemporary and that she did. We arrived at our 6pm Wave ADR without a moment to spare.

I Love this picture of the 4 boys waiting for dinner:

DisneyJune2009239.jpg

Here is a picture of LJ discovering the intriquicies (sp?) of text messaging. It wasn't long before he was asking how old you had to be to get a cell phone.:rolleyes1

DisneyJune2009237.jpg

Note that as one 9 year old is discovering the cell phone, one 16 year old is discovering the cocktail menu!

Here is a random picture of the restuarant:

DisneyJune2009238.jpg

FYI: The Wave serves smoothies as a beverage on the dining plan. I think there were two types: a berry smoothie and a smoothie that tasted liked a virgin pina colada. Most of us had the former, while DH has the later. I think the pina colada was the better of the two. For dinner, two of us had the fish (I think it was sword fish) and the rest of the adults had the filet. I completely forgot to take food pics until after we had started eating, thus ruining the presentation of the food:

Half eaten filet:

DisneyJune2009241.jpg

LJ had chicken nuggets, which he inhaled in about 3 seconds flat.

BTW - I had the filet and it was very good. I rarely order meat in a restaurant, but for some reason I wanted it tonight and it did not disappoint.

Now for dessert, except that I can't, for the life of me, remember what the dessert choices were. I know they were samplers with three mini desserts in each. They all had a cute name. I meant to refer to All Ears net, but I forgot. Oh well, I'll have to look it up tomorrow. I think mine was something like, "Salty and Crunchy". Whatever I had, it was good and just the right amount.....not too much, not too little. LJ had a little sundae which he loved.

Here's a pic of the desserts:

DisneyJune2009243.jpg

All in all I give the Wave :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 2 thumbs up. I would definately eat there again. After dinner DH, LJ, DS14, and I decided to walk outside around the contemporary. DS16 and his friend caught the monorail back to the MK. Here are some pictures of the Contemporary and of.....ta da.....some boats!!!!!!

DisneyJune2009251.jpg

DisneyJune2009255.jpg

We decided to walk over to the MK. DH and I had dinner at the Cali grill in December, so we knew it was a short walk over to MK. This is what I love sooooo much about the Contemporary. Out of all the great Disney resorts, this is the ONLY one where you can walk to MK. To me, there is something magical about walking to MK.

Bye Contemporary:

Hello MK:

DisneyJune2009260.jpg

DisneyJune2009261.jpg

Well... I really wanted to finish Day 2 tonight and I am just a few hours of fun short of doing that. But it is getting late and I have lots more pics to post, so I am going to call it a night and pick up where I left off tomorrow!

Up next: fireworks, Spectromagic, and a near collision with a Disney bus (thanks Ellie)

My DS16 is learning to drive. He has had his permit for a little over a month. I am the primary teacher. But, here's the deal... He HAS to learn to drive stick because both my DH and I have 5 speed manual transmission cars. First, this lion is just about the cutest thing ever! It looks like you found lots of fun ways to kill time waiting for the teens to return!

Second, you are NOWHERE near to being a senior citizen :sad2:

Third, your story made me reminisce a bit about my first date with my hubby. We went to a bar then when it closed we decided to go for coffee. Greg drove to the bar but claimed (of course I didn't find that out for quite awhile) that he had too much to drink and asked me to drive to get coffee. He had a stick shift and I had never driven one. When I told him this, he said he would teach me. Of course the logical way to do this was for me to put my hand on the stick and he put his hand on top of mine. I later discovered this really was just a ploy for him to hold my hand for awhile :lmao:

DisneyJune2009237.jpg

Note that as one 9 year old is discovering the cell phone, one 16 year old is discovering the cocktail menu!

:lmao: That was the first thing I noticed! :lmao:

Love that the 16 yr old was perusing the cocktail menu! :lmao: Thanks for the thumbs up review of the Wave. I'd love to try it!

I agree walking to MK is magical. The decor of the Contemporary doesn't really appeal to me but after seeing those DVC rooms I dream of an MK view room so I can soak in the tub while watching Wishes out the window!

OOOH what a way to pass time...go to a lovely gift shop, explore the Savannah LOL...I'm sure the time flew right by!!!

Okay I LOL'd at the 9 year old cell phone and the 16yr old cocktail menu that is a great picture LOL!!!!!

The food at the Wave looks yummy!! Glad you guys had such a great meal!

Thank goodness you texted the boys when you did!

Love all your Kidani pictures yet again! I wish now I would have made it over there that week -- especially to check out the gift shop!

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: over LJ learning to text, and DS looking at the drinks menu!

Dinner looks very yummy -- and what heaven to be able to walk to the MK from the Contemporary! That would be so convenient!

Loving the pictures of AK. It's so beautiful. I really want to stay there now. :cloud9:

Too funny about your corrupting minors with texting and alcohol menus. :lmao:

I somehow got a little behind :confused3

I'm glad LJ was OK! Maybe it was a bit of low blood sugar being that the lemonade helped so much!

The pool looks like so much fun! I can't wait to hit that pool in Jan! I also can't wait to see the kiddos playing in Uwanja (not sure that's how it's spelled) Camp!!! It's so tempting to call the kiddos over to look at all your great pictures!! But, I don't want to give anything away!

I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner at the Wave!

I agree with you on BLT! I will stay at some point!!!!

do you have pics /report of your Vero Beach stay?

I do. click on my June 2008 report and you will see Vero Pics. It was beautiful and we had a 1BR on the 3rd floor with a fabulous ocean view. I would go back to that room in a heart beat.

I am actually surprisingly close to qualifying for AARP. Everytime I think about it I go.....:scared1:

I love your story about learning to drive stick. That's so cute!

Cocktail menu ..... fat chance of that happening!

it was good to see the other boys:rotfl:

Nice of them to show! Huh! We pretty much only saw the older two at dinner and at night. Thanks goodness for ADR's or we may never have seen them! :rotfl:I really didn't mind that much because my DS 16 has been to Disney alot and I knew he thought he was being cool by just hanging with his friend.

Love that the 16 yr old was perusing the cocktail menu! :lmao: Thanks for the thumbs up review of the Wave. I'd love to try it!

The Wave was good and I understand it is relatively easy to get an ADR. When more people start realizing what it has to offer, that will change.

C- I dream of that exact same view and soak! :cloud9:

The savannah was amazing. I wish I had spent more time there in the afternoons.

I bet LJ has been bugging his parents non stop about getting a cell phone. I know he is going to tell his mom and dad that they need to starting texting!

The Wave was a great kick-off meal for our first full day!

Thank goodness you texted the boys when you did!

Can you imagine if I hadn't texted the boys until we got on the bus? That would have s++ked! That's why I think there is some good mojo going on at Kidani!

I love walking from the Contemporary. I think it is a must and the parking lot was very empty. It was only 1/3 full. They do not give out a timed parking pass, they just ask for ID. DS 14 asked if we could park there again on Friday night (our ADR was at Tony's), but I told him, "No". That's not to say I wasn't tempted!

LL: You are practically at 12,000 posts. I remember when it was 10,000! You are a machine! :worship:I know you will get your chance to stay at AKL, because I see DVC in your future. I am looking in my crystal ball right now as I type! :rotfl:

Yes - I was all about corrupting the minors on this trip! :rolleyes1

You're not behind! Your kids will love the pool. The activities are all geared for kids their age. I admire you for being able to keep the trip secret. I was never able to do that. I am such a blabber mouth.

I definately recommend the Wave for a single TS meal. It's great for the DDP because those yummy smoothies are included.

:woohoo:for dreaming of BLT!

Can you believe that I actually thought I would get Day 2 done in 3 installment? Yeah, right......Here I am on part 5.

Well, OK then....off topic....but I took DS 16 driving again today. I let him drive on "real" roads tonight with "real" traffic. Up to now I have been taking him on rural roads mostly to practice handling the car and get in and out of first gear a few times. Tonight I put him at traffic lights with cars behind him. He stalled once. Not bad! He is coming along nicely. I told him that when this is all done he will be glad he knows how to drive stick. He said, "Oh I already know I want to drive stick. automatic is boring". :thumbsup2 That's the attitude it takes to be successful.

So back to my TR.....When I left off DH, LJ, DS 14, and I walked to the MK. When we got through the gate my DS said, "Let's take the train to frontierland". No objections from me! Since space mountain and the TTA were closed, I didn't see the point of going over to Tomorrowland. I was secretly hoping there might be FP's left for Splash or Big Thunder. And you know what.....there were. Well, only for Big Thunder. Better than nothing! We grabbed 4 with a return time of 9:30. I don't remember what time it was, but I remember thinking that if I could keep LJ up to ride BTM we could high tail it out of there to get him in bed at a reasonable time!

FP's safely tucked away we headed for Pirates of the Caribbean. This was pretty much a walk or a short wait. I tried to take pics here, but I was pretty unsuccessful. So I just sat back and enjoyed.

Pretty creepy looking....

DisneyJune2009264-1.jpg

Before long we were in the gift shop goofing around....

DisneyJune2009266.jpg

DisneyJune2009267.jpg

After POC we headed for this bad boy:

DisneyJune2009268.jpg

I love this ride at night, but for some reason I was feeling distracted. Yet my memory fails me as to why. I think I just wanted to get over to BTM. LJ and the rest of the crew enjoyed this ride. Its so campy. Last time DH and I rode it we had the most phenomenal CM named Jessica. Did you ever meet one of those CM's who you thought was really talented? That was Jessica. She was a natural. What a hoot. She was so believable. The problem with having a Captain like Jessica is that everyone else is substandard. Not bad, not terrible, perhaps even entertaining....but they just aren't Jessica. I hope Jessica ends up being a terrific, well know actress someday! BTW - our wait time for JC was ten minutes tops, probably 5.

Well, of course, LJ thought both of these rides were AWESOME! When we were done JC we headed over to this baby.....

DisneyJune2009269.jpg

Hopefully you will recognize that we took a magic carpet ride high over the MK. This is actually the first time I ever rode this ride. So I rode a new ride tonight! Yeah me! After the carpet ride we used some snack credits for ice cream. Being on the dining plan, LJ was perptually hungry. The food for a 9 year old was just not enough!

By now we didn't have much time to wait until our FP was due so I thought we might start heading over towards BTM. But guess what I forgot????????

Any guesses????????

Well, shoot, I totally forgot about Spectromagic! :scared: sheesh - just as I thought we should start heading over to BTM I saw the first lights of specto. I called out to DH, "Oh crap (well...that isn't exactly what I said) we are STUCK over here because of the parade and now it runs the opposite direction. It ends here". At least I remembered that little detail! Dh says' "Hurry, maybe we can make it across before the parade hits". Doh! DH  Doh! "We will never get ACROSS the parade rounte and through all those people and now we can't even get a spot to watch". Wow - I had flunked Disney planning 101. I mean I had MAJORLY FLUNKED Disney planning. This was no small mistake. This was a BIG BLUNDER! With a flicker of hope we still marched over to Pecos Bill to see if there was anyway we could cross the parade route.

The only good thing about this whole escapade is that almost the entire porch outside of Pecos Bill was empty. And what borders that porch????? Think, people think....... A BIG STONE WALL......AND.......There were only 2 people standing on that stone wall. We hoisted LJ up there and then I climbed up. And what da ya know? I was actually able to get pics. OK now, this was alright. I hadn't planned on watching the parade until Friday night, but I could deal with this little unexpected perch. I wasn't blocking anyone's view. No icy stairs. No "get out of my way" Home free!

Well my first few pictures didn't turn out too great because I was fooling iwth the settings, but I did manage to get a few OK pics. And now for your viewing pleasure......
