Kick'n It at Kidani (aka Am I Becoming a Resort Snob?)Final Update 8/20 p.54

I thought I would post a few more photos of the villa before I post my next update:

The Master BR. This bed was so comfortable:

Artwork on the Walls (really, really nice). I think the second one is the Monkey picture that CP liked so much. I loved it, too!

Up next: Our first evening in the parks.....where else, but the animal kingdom!

Hurray for more pictures of the villa! What did DS think of the pull out chair -- also what did LJ think of the couch? Were they comfortable?

I did love the monkey picture -- we had many a discussion about it -- I thought for the longest time that it was red hair sticking out of their heads, but Chelsea pointed out that those were nightcaps they were wearing. :rotfl:

Did you spend much time on that ginormous balcony?

Love the Kidani pictures. We have seen the models on the DVC tour, and the rooms are just awesome!

I will enjoy reading along on your report. I raised soccer playing boys, too. It's nice that everyone was able to get away for some R&R - away from work, practices, schedules, chores, etc.

LOVE your pictures so far!! Got a question...did you regret not springing the points for a savannah view in Kidani? We try to use our points frugally (even though DH HAS to have a 1 bdrm for the 3 of us!!) and we booked a standard view as well. We had a standard view in Jambo in 2007, but we had a neat view of the pool area and we weren't in the room very much. I think we may spend more time at the resort during our Kidani trip and I'm wondering if I will miss not having a savannah view.

LJ had no trouble with the couch. He slept like a log. He never woke up in the am, even with me trying to make coffee in the dark.

I think the sleeper chair was fine, too. I think DS 14 was just insulted that the big guys were hogging the beds, This made the chair less desirable for him. He, on the other hand, hated when he heard me making any noise in the am and told me so with his constant grunting and moaning!

We did not spend much time on the balcony. I guess because it was hard to get to the central balcony in the morning when LJ was still sleeping and it took us a awhile to figure out how to open the slider door in our room. Doh!

Yeah for soccer. Thanks for dropping by, MeMom. Glad you like the report and the pics. Thanks for the boat suggestion in LL's TR.

I DID NOT regret booking standard view. I noticed that there were times during the day when the animals were not even out on the savannah. Remember, I had that little peeking window right outside of my door. I still feel like I got a good look at the animals, though. I just don't think the animals are worth 40 or so extra points when I only get 200 a year. I will probably always stay standard unless I splurge for concierge to do the am safari ride. LJ and my kids were also not that interested in the animals.

I do, however, wish my view was slightly better and I would have preferred a pool view, but most of the standard units do not overlook the pool. They look out over and past the parking lot. Once the foliage grows a bit more it will be nicer. What ev - the rest of the resort more than made up for it!

I love the report so far, I am glad that DN9 had a good time

Thanks 15isto2. Happy to have you join in. DN did have a great time!

Yeah:banana::banana::banana:Paula is finally here. I thought I was going to have to go out and find you. Did I say next Monday? I definately meant last Monday, although I don't think I actually got started until Wednesday. I finally have a day where I don't have to work or rush around with other activities, so you are just in time for another update.

BTW - I give you permission to photoshop anything you see on this TR. You are free to put your skills to work! :thumbsup2

Jumping over!!! I read the first post and am going to come back in a bit and catch up! I can't wait to read more!

I have ALWAYS wanted to visit AK in the evening, during EMH. Yet for some reason this has always eluded me. I think my hankering for a nighttime visit started after they built EE. I had a  moment when I realized if I liked BTM in the dark, I would love EE in the dark. I am sad to say I have yet to ride EE in the dark. It did not happen this trip, and it won't on my short September trip. Why..... because I will never seem to plan my trips during AK evening EMH. :sad1:

How can that be????? Well, let me see..... l visited Jan 2008.....4 nights solo....missed EMH; I visited June 2009......5 nights after 3 nights at Vero......missed EMH; I visited in Dec 2008....4 nights with DH......missed EMH again. That brings me to June 2009....thought I had EMH nailed for sure and they moved it to Monday, my arrival day. :rolleyes1

My original plan would have been to stack EE FP's all day and bring them back at night. This obviously DID NOT happen. The other reason I did not even attempt to ride EE on my first night was that I still was under the impression that LJ might be a bit wimpy when it came to thrill rides. I'm not kidding, his parents had all my caution bells and whistles in high gear. I was not going to take him to any ride that might freak him out and scar him for life! :rotfl:

I knew the only amusement park he had ever been to was Dutch Wonderland. If you are not familiar with Dutch Wonderland, which most of you probably aren't, it is a chilren's amusement park right in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. It is perfect for young children and they do have a pretty fun old wooden coaster, but by 9 years of age most kids are starting to outgrow it! LJ told me he loved the the DW coaster and the simulator rides, but we had stepped up LJ's game quite a bit at Disney world, so I didn't know what to expect.

As it turns out, I could have thrown all caution to the wind because it turned out that LJ loved everything. He is a junior thrill ride junky. I wish I had known sooner. I wish his parents had known. I hope they do now!

So DH, LJ and I packed up and drove to AK. Yeah - we are so lazy - we drove. I bought all the kids' park tickets at AAA and, in addition to a discount and the ability to pay with $250 in AAA visa rebates, purchasing tickets at AAA comes with a nice little side bonus - drum roll please - THE AAA DIAMOND PARKING PASS. I like using the AAA pass at AK. You end up parked next to the handicapped lot and you enter the park from the opposite side. It gets you so close that I must always resist the urge to get out of the car and start skipping to the entrance....yeah....get a mental image of that!

Before we left we asked the older boys if the wanted to join us, but they were still in their recumbant position on the bed, so off we went. I will add that prior to leaving I remembered I needed to cancel an ADR that I had originally scheduled for boma later that evening. I love Boma, but I REALLY wanted to see AK in the dark and I was still digesting Chik fil a.

The first thing DH and I needed to do after we arrived was get my AP. I let my AP expire after my December visit. I knew it would make more sense to buy a new one this visit. I was originally going to buy my ticket at AAA and then upgrade, but DH got one of those 10% discount cards in the mail. My DVC AP ended up costing something like $356. It was only about $8 or $10 more than DH's renewal. I was happy to have saved a little $.

Of course, there was only one CM at park services so the wait in line was a bit tedious. Here's a pic I took of the backside of the AK entrance. Yeah, I was that bored, but I tried not to get impatient.

DisneyJune2009063.jpg

Finally, AP in hand we entered the turnstiles.......

I took this picture in honor of LL's light fixture fetish:

It's funny, but when you already have a gazillion disney pictures stored on your computer and photobucket account, you tend to take some rather obscure pictures. At least, I do!

So, given the fact that LJ loves simulator rides, I asked him if he wanted to go on a ride that is "almost" a simulator.....Dinosaur. I explained the ride to him and he thought he would prefer it over Bug's Life. So off we went! :woohoo: If you've read my previous TRs, you know I love this ride. I could ride it multiple times in any visit, heck, in any hour. The line was just long enough for me to slow down for this picture:

DisneyJune2009069.jpg

So how do you think LJ described this ride?????? Anyone guess "AWESOME"! Seriously, he loved it and after only one trip back to the Crustaceon period he had already started memorizing the lines to the pre show.

DisneyJune2009070.jpg

OK ....my head is seriously cut off there in the back row, but look at that guy in the front row.....what's up with that????? Is that fear or total boredom or too many cocktails at dinner?????

Here's a few more nighttime pics:

DisneyJune2009075.jpg

I think LJ's mom called at this point, probably because DN7 asked to speak with his brother. We were in the gift shop behind dinosaur when she called and it is loud back there, so I don't know how he heard a thing.

After dinosaur we looked at the line for Primeval whirl. Too long for my tastes, so LJ and I rode the little brontosaurus spinning ride (the AK version of dumbo). I haven't been on this ride since my oldest was 9, so I enjoyed my spin through the night time air. The temperature and humidity was perfect. It really was a glorious evening.

Our next stop was the Boneyard. Again, this was a nostalgic visit for me because my kids are way too old for that. LJ ran in and out of tunnels and up and down stairs and DH and I got nervous everytime he was out of sight more than a few minutes.

DisneyJune2009078.jpg

I think this is a close up of one of the rocks in there:

DisneyJune2009079.jpg

After the boneyard we hit Bug's Life. I kept real quiet so LJ could enjoy the little surprise visit at the end of the show. Again "AWESOME!"

At this point I asked if we got walk over to Asia to "look at" EE. I really wanted a night time pic. Of course, once we got over there I had to resist the urge to go running off to the single rider line.

these next few night time pics are a bit blurry:

I had a brief moment of insanity when I suggested that LJ and I ride Kali River Rapids. I knew he would love it, but then I looked at my watch and realized it was well after 9pm. 9pm is LJ's official bedtime at home. My brother warned me that if he stayed up too late he would be "a mess" the next day. I assumed this to mean anytime after 10pm, so I decided we better call it a night. As it turns out we kept LJ up after his bedtime every night and he never turned into a pumpkin, even when we kept pushing the bedtime later and later! :rotfl:

Here is our last look at the nightime version of AK:

Got to go drive my son somewhere, but I will be back with comments to the recent posts soon!

awww I'm so sorry you didn't get to ride EE in the dark!!! It's a most amazing experience!!

LJ sounds like a hoot! It is cracking me up that his parents really didn't know he had this little 'wild side':rotfl:

I never spent any time with the kiddos in the boneyard... maybe next time;)

Paula

AK at night is something I would love to do. Between you and Paula you both have strong endorsements for it. But as you say it is seldom scheduled so it is a bit of the luck of the draw.

When are your Sept dates? Will you be there when we're there?

I am also tickled by LJ's wild side. Too funny. Glad he never turned into a pumpkin. Who sticks to bed times in WDW? :confused3

I meant to comment in an earlier post that I had no idea you could get a visitor pass to go past security in the airport. Holy over protective, batman! :scared1: But cute. I bet they missed him a lot. Your other nephew's doe-eyed pic definitely made me wish that he could go too. Next time! He'll get his trip! ::yes::

My gosh, what a fantastic start to your trip!! Love that you got to re-experience things through your nephews eyes!!
Well strike one up for another RN who calls AKV's home!! (blt also;)). We will be there for the first time in Sept. can't wait!

Your villa is quite beautiful! I love the baskets on the wall.

Sorry you didn't get to do EE yet at night but it sounds like you had a fun evening with LJ. I'm sure you will be his favorite aunt forever for taking him on this trip!

Thanks for all the kidani pics:cloud9: Ahhhh home sweet home... how I long for thee.....

Paula

:lmao:I packed my DH's underwear this trip AND I threatened him with an appearance from none other than the underwear gnome! Plus we did wash before we left Kidani. ;)

My DS16 looks so old to me right now. He looks like he is 18 instead of 16. He can grow a full freak'n beard. DS14 looks like a 14 year old, although he changes everyday.

You are going to  Kidani! I am seriously starting to wish it was my home resort.

I am in love the pics!

Thanks IluvXU! And Welcome! I'll have to hop on over to your TR to see where you stayed!

Jumping over!!! I read the first post and am going to come back in a bit and catch up! I can't wait to read more!

Welcome mickeysmyboy!!!! I really enjoyed reading about your top notch "adults only" trip and I'm so happy that you decided to purchase AKL. You are going to love Kidani!

Paula

Uggggghhhhh! I know. I soooooo need to ride it in the dark. In September the EMH is Thursday night and we are leaving Thursday (of course!). I was really hoping it would stay on Monday night, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I did mention to my DH that we might consider changing to Monday through Thursday night. We are leaving the kids completely alone for 4 nights, so we are trying to pick the 4 nights that should be least disruptive to school and soccer.

LJ was a hoot. I've got many more LJ stories to come! Absolutely nothing freaked him out or even caused him to pause. He really knows how to roll!

AK at night is something I would love to do. Between you and Paula you both have strong endorsements for it. But as you say it is seldom scheduled so it is a bit of the luck of the draw.

AK at night is a must. EE at night is a bigger must. :headache: My September dates are 9/20 - 24. I wanted to go the following when everyone and their grandmother will be there, but my coworker is leaving for a 3 week safari in Africa. Figures, so I had to plan a week early to get free dining. And I only feel comfortable leaving the kids alone for 4 nights.

I definately want to take my other nephew. If I don't plan a future trip with the two older boys, then I will plan a trip to take their whole family. I just don't think it will be next summer cause DH and I may go the first week of May 2010 for my birthday. I also have to check the gnomefest dates because I would like to be there for some of that!

My gosh, what a fantastic start to your trip!! Love that you got to re-experience things through your nephews eyes!!

Welcome SunnieRN. Ok thats 2 RN's and a pharmacist who call AKL home. My home is really SSR! I bet you can't wait until September.....what are your dates???

Katie - It really was beautiful. The whole place is beautiful. That's why I think I could turn into a resort snob after that experience. It's hard for me to picture a nicer room, (although I am sure they exist). Oh yeah....I think I am pretty high up on LJ's list....right behind uncle Denny (my DH) and his two cousins!

Ok! All caught up! I'm loving you TR!!!!! All your pictures are beautiful!! Especially the Kindani pictures! I'm having a hard time not calling the kids over to tell them to look at where we're staying in Jan!! LOL!!

I'm interested to know if you got in trouble with your brother and SIL for keeping the little one up past his bedtime and letting him ride thrill rides! BTW, what were they thinking getting the passes and coming past security at the airport?! I get the whole nervous parent, your kids going away without you thing but really! Not only wass it complete torture for the other 2 but they probably made LJ nervous! I'm glad he, and his brothers, made it through!!

Can't wait to read more!
