This was my 8th trip to the world and my first time (since my honeymoon in 1989) without my children. Yes, I kept feeling guilty about being in the Happiest Place on Earth without my kids and YES, I kept buying them gifts ... but I digress :rolleyes1

So, this was our only chance to do the Keys to the Kingdom tour since you have to be over 16 to do it. We signed up for Sat. May 6 for the 8:30am tour. We arrived at MK about 8am and LOVED  having Main St. almost all to ourselves to take LOTS of pictures. It was awesome! I only wish the kids could have been in them :confused3

We checked in and received a lunch menu for Columbia Harbour House. We put in our order and received our listening devices (which are such a good idea by the way!).

We had to wait awhile to get started, apparently a couple from our tour was running a little late. That was okay though, more time for pictures! :cool1:

Matthew was our tour guide and I can only say he was amazing! He had worked the day before and worked grad nights the night before, so he had worked from 7am-4am the day before and told us he went home and showered and came back, so he was running on NO sleep at all. However, he did a marvelous job and was so funny & entertaining the entire time. I kept marveling at how well he handled himself despite his circumstances. You can tell he LOVES all things Disney.

I was worried that this tour would be non-stop walking. I bought a Y membership 5 months before my trip and had super good intentions to walk a lot before it and get in shape, but that didn't actually happen. I am not used to walking a lot and was worried about keeping up with the group. Not to worry at all though ~ there were several times when Matthew took us to out of the way places and let us sit while he stood and talked (I kept thinking he should sit down too, but he NEVER did).

We started our tour just before, as Matthew called it "the running of the bulls" which meant the 9am park opening when everyone runs down Main St. He had us perch in an out of the way spot off Main St. and watch this. It was funny! :rotfl2: He then gave us the history of Main St. and told us about all the key people repsonsible for starting WDW. It was fascinating.

We then walked to the end of Main St. and heard more facts and learned about the Walt & Mickey statue by the castle. Then it was off to the Jungle Cruise where we had our own boat and were able to learn about that ride and more about Walt's vision. My favorite part was when he pointed out what one of the natives actually says when you think they're only talking jibberish. I won't spoil the surprise, but my dh now says it none stop and I still giggle everytime he does :lmao:

Then it was off to the behind the scenes area behind Splash Mountain. We learned about staging and garbage :teeth: which was interesting to learn about. Then it was off to the Haunted Mansion where we got some behind the scenes info and access and rode the ride. I finally saw the second hidden Mickey in that ride. Matthew did an excellent job of telling us where it was and then literally jumped out of his car to show us when we got close. He's such a hoot!! :yay:

We then had lunch. It was all ready for us and our lunch hostess was so gracious. We took a potty break there and got to chat with others in our group.

We then did a little more walking and learning and then got the gem of the tour ... the backstage look at the utilidors. They were tunnels as expected, but I still thought it was WAY COOL to be under there :cool1:

The tour ended back at City Hall and Matthew said he was so pleased we were all such a good group and helped him get through his morning after no sleep that he gave us all free fast passes. That was awesome because we used ours for Splash Mt. when the line was a 50 min. wait and then we got regular fast passes for BTMR and rode both of those rides at 2pm on a Sat. with literally no wait for either while others were waiting almost an hour for both! We felt like rock stars or something :smooth:

The tour was the highlight of this last trip and I would highly recommend it! We even had 1 guy in our group (my best friend's boyfriend) who had NEVER been to MK before and took the tour. He thought is was very fascinating and loved every minute of it, even though it was his first exposure to MK ever (he's a big Disney history buff though and longtime Disneyland tourist).

thanks, great info. I'l be taking the tour at the end of June with my ds 17.
Can't wait. :)

Oh how great! Thank you so much for the report. :) We were planning on doing this in December and now I'm even more excited!!

Thank you for taking the time to write your report! I am going to the Tour with a group of Dissers in Sept and I cannot wait! :Pinkbounc

I forgot to add that when we booked we asked for the AAA discount, which I believe was 15 or 20% off, making it $51/person ... worth EVERY penny! :cheer2:

I know what the native says :rotfl2:

Great report! Thanks for sharing, DH and I always wanted to do this tour as well but I don't want it to ruin the magic.

DH and I did exactly the same thing when we went to the World without the kids for a weekend this past January. :cool1: It's hard or parents with small children to take any tours. I agree that it was the highlight of our trip as well!

Very Cool. We're waiting for our DS10 to become 16 and do this with us.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I, too, just took the tour this past week (Monday, May 8). Fabulous!! Had to do it alone since DS is 5 and DH stayed with him in MK. Our tour guide was Rae and she was wonderful!!! So much info and enthusiasm. Everyone that knows I went away asks about the tour first!

Another tip---if you use your Disney VISA you get $12 off!

Did you have to use a park ticket that day, plus pay to do the tour? Just wondering.

You do have to use a park ticket for that day.

momof2disprincesses,

Great review, we've done the tour also and loved it. One cool thing I remember was when we were in the utilidor and our guide, Rae, said "Ssh, listen closely." We could hear the horse drawn trolley going up Main St. right above our heads!

Thanks so much for the report. DH and I are going w/o the kids in January and I've been thinking about this tour as a possibility. Because of your report I now believe it's a must! Again, thanks for taking the time to post.

Do they only offer this at park opening or throughout the day? About how long does the tour last?

Your review was great..and very timely. We're finally going on the KTTK tour in late June now that DD turned 16 :woohoo: The rest of us (DH, DS-18, and I) are so excited to be able to do this. :cool1:

Great report on your Keys to the Kingdom! Thanks for sharing.

BTW, I see your heading down to see WDW all dressed up for the holidays. You're going to love it!!! It's my favorite time of the year with all the parks and every hotel decorated. We're trying the MNSSHP this year but I definitely want to make a holiday trip again soon!

The tour lasts about 4 1/2 - 5 hours. My tour started at 9:30. I know there were a few tours before mine, but I am not sure how many are offered after.

We went on this tour last Christmas Eve with our DS17 and DS21. We all loved it. Our guide was Jeffrey and he was outstanding! We're heading back this Christmas to take the Yultide Fantasy Tour with SIL and friends. I believe my SIL and friends are also taking the Keys to the Kingdom tour too.

I was concerned about it being too much walking also, but it is so relaxing and you concentrate so much on what you're being told that you just don't realize how long the tour has been. We ended our Christmas Eve at 'Ohana's - can't beat that. :woohoo:

Thank you so much for this review!! I wanted to do one of the tours last week, but wasn't sure I was going to be in time at the MK because of the hotel shuttle :(
Now I can only hope I'll be able to book a Walk in Walt's footsteps tour at DL! :)

Since Jungle Cruise is my favourite ride EVER, could you PM me what the natives are saying? Pretty please please please??
