Anyone heard any speculation about what will happen to cruises with Key West stops? We just booked a February 2022 Magic Cruise with a stop in Key West (and Nassau and Castaway). Frankly I'd be kinda glad if they just completely changed to a Cozumel or Cayman + Castaway itinerary with no Nassau but not sure if they could do that given how ports are scheduled. Would not super love it if they just dropped it and we only got Nassau and Castaway.

"Speculation" is that DCL won't be going to Key West, since they've banned large cruise ships, and instituted a maximum number of cruise passengers limit allowed in port in the recent election.

That's what I'm thinking, I'm just wondering what they'll do ... what have they done in the past when they have to switch stops after posting itineraries?

It's not rare that ships/cruise lines change port stops, even after posting a specific itinerary. Usually, they'll try to find an alternative port. If that's not possible, a sea day is added to the itinerary.

Does that regulation go into effect immediately? Or was it for some future year?

They are intended to go into effect immediately. I imagine some of the legal battles are because of contracts with the port that pre-exist the ban, but I don't know.

Would Tampa offer any kind of tourist venues that might appeal to cruise ship guests?

My wife and I took a 12 night DCL Mediterranean cruise in August 2016 that was round trip from Barcelona, and included ports in Greece, Turkey and Malta. We got and email from DCL in December before the cruise that said:

We continually evaluate our cruise offerings and have recently decided to modify the August 1, 2016, sailing to include ports in the Western Mediterranean instead of those in Turkey, Greece and Malta. Your assistance in communicating this change to your client is appreciated. The revised itinerary is below:

...

We realize this is a considerable change from the previously published itinerary and hope you and your client understand our desire to only provide the best possible experiences to our Guests.

In recognition of this change, each stateroom reservation that remains booked on this revised itinerary will receive a $1,000 credit per stateroom. This credit will appear on your client’s stateroom account and can be used towards the purchase of shipboard services, merchandise, food and beverages, or Port Adventures. We hope your client will enjoy this additional credit to use during this 12-night sailing.

Should you have questions or wish to make modifications to your client’s reservation, please contact us at 1-866-325-3905 or 407-566-7032 prior to January 5, 2016. We are confident this revised itinerary will provide for an amazing vacation that only Disney can provide and look forward to welcoming your client onboard next summer.

We had booked the cruise partly because of the ports that were now cancelled. We had never been to the Mediterranean, so we decided to not cancel. I'm not sure that that I would expect similar compensation if they have to eliminate Key West.

Wanted to thank everyone for this thread, i was just looking at DCL cruises specifically to Key West and had no idea. I would be profoundly disappointed if that was my draw for selecting one. I feel like an idiot.

Thanks for keeping everyone in the loop.

It’s sad because Key West is absolutely charming and a great stop, IMO.
