Key West - what to see and do

Of course, I've heard so many times that one of the things to do in Key West is to get a key lime pie. Does anyone know where's a good place to get one?

The Blond Giraffe key lime pie was AMAZING!! I had a traditional slice, but they even have it frozen on a stick and dipped in chocolate. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Has anyone done the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory? How was it? My DSs (6 & 3) are fascinated by butterflies, so I thought this might be enjoyable for them. But, now I am considering switching to the pirate museum.

Frozen Key lime pie dipped in chocolate?? That sounds interesting. Can you tell me how far the Blond Giraffe is? Can we walk there from the port?

Shirley i had contacted you awhile ago but now that my cruise is only 17 weeks away, how do i contact you to get the coupons and info that you are so gracious to share with us

Another great thing that we did was to climb the Lighthouse. You get a great view of the Magic from up there.

We'll be back in Key West in April and can't wait to visit the Butterfly Conservatory and the Aquarium with our girls.

We enjoyed taking a tour of the Hemmingway House.

DD5 enjoyed the butterfly conservatory very much (so did DW & I). It's was really nice to be able to walk through the gardens and check out the butterflies. DD loved it when the butterflies landed on her!

When DD was 6 we toured the Hemingway House. DD loved the 6 toed cats that wander about the property. On that cruise we also visited the Aquarium. DD got to pet a nurse shark, and check out some other interesting creatures.

It was on the main street (Duval?) I think. We actually walked by it on the way back from the southernmost point.
I was in Key Lime heaven :)

I have a 6 year old son who is fascinated with pirates right now. Anyone with any experience with the Pirate Museum?

we were there for vacation in2005, we loved the museum!! and now there is a restaurant attached to it with even more history. but being from philly and the owner of both the museum and the restaurant is pat croce from philly we are a little partial. But we loved it and plan on going back when we take our cruise in 2009 yes, 2009, i know that is 2 years away, but i have as much fun planning as we do going!!!!

We really enjoyed the Mel Fisher Museum. Something about all that treasure from the sea is so fascinating. I especially appreciated the section on the slave ship Henrietta Marie. It gave me an opportunity to educate my children on the harsh realities of the slave trade. We watched a documentary about the Henrietta Marie a short time ago and my DD remembered viewing the shackles on display at the museum. Viewing that in person had an impact on my kids that a picture in a history book could never offer.

We love Key West and have visited many times via cruise ship and also stayed there for several days on a land vacation....this summer we are going back for 7 night land vacation....we are staying right at the Westin Key West Marina which is right near where the cruise ships dock....too bad the Magic will be in the Med this summer!!!

Hey Mary

When are you going to be in Key West? Let me know since my sister and I are planning to trip there this summer to take care of the family plot at the Key West cementery - we will plan it so we can take you on a "conch" tour.
Drop me a note if you get the chance.
Always

Anyone know how much it costs to rent an electric car? What's the general concensus on the best mode of transportation if we want to do the aquarium and the butterfly conservatory?

I have a question about the Pirate Soul museum. How far of a walk is it from where the ship docks? Also, what is the "Shipwreck Histroieum" (sorry, that's spelled wrong) part, is it inside the museum?

DH and I LOVED Key West! Did the trolley tour, which we thoroughly enjoyed, and then walked, looked, and shopped. We finished off our tour with frozen key lime pie on a stick at the Blond Giraffe. A slice of chocolate-covered heaven....mmmmmm. :thumbsup2

Norm, the hubby, is in Key West as we "speak" at this moment and having a blast fishing with his son and the rest of the ol' conch friends of his. He told me yesterday that the weather was beautiful but extremely hot - also being a postman in KW for 40 years, he can not remember it being that hot so if you are going during the summer months, prepare yourselves.
