Has anyone seen/toured Hemingway's House, or Truman's Little White House? Is it worth our time? What is there to see? MIL is a retired reading teacher, and I like history. What do you think?

Hey P'SP
Hope you and yours are doing good - listen I have a great deal of information you would be interested in when you are in Key West - drop me a note at snelsonbrown@aol.com ok
First off both of the places mentioned are full of history - especially Mr. Hemingway's - I love to tell the story of how my grandfather taught Pauline Hemingway to speak spanish and my grandmother and uncle tutor her including how to write and read spanish for a large sum of 25 cents a lesson - also he was a very mean person when it came to children - he did not have a bag of rocks by his door to throw at animals - it was to throw at us kids if we as so much walked on "his" sidewalk - as for President Truman he was a sweetie - knew him also since he would ask my dad each morn to walk with him around Key West - daddy was a cab driver and knew the history about Key West only too well -
I have brochures on both of these and a lot more.
Anyhow hope you have a great time in my hometown - adults more most part do.
Always
Shirley

Hemingway's house is great. I've read several of his books and wouldn't really consider myself a fan, but the house is really steeped in history and the tour is a hoot. Plus, I'm a cat lover so that does it for me! All those adorable little guys and gals running around and lounging in the Key West sun, soooooo funny!

The house is neat to see just for the architecture and design. They also have a nice little gift shop that sells everything from magnets to painting to, of course, books.

We did Hemingway's house...it was quite nice...doesn't take long at all. Hubby loved his writing area. Worth the trip, yes.

We just did those on last week's cruise. We had decided to take the Trolley tour and pre bought the tickets for Hemingway's House, Little White House and Maritime Museum when we bought our Trolley Tickets (saving $1.00/person/museum).

The Hemingway House was very interesting (according to DH - I was too busy entertaining 4 year old). Truman's Little White House was very informative. We had a great guide. You start with a 10 minute movie and then tour the entire house. Well worth the time and money.

Both of these are within walking distance of the pier and no additional transportation is needed. We ended at Little White House and when we walked out of complex, we looked to our left and that street led directly to pier. Very easy to get back on board ship.

We found the Trolleys to be overwhelmed with people and we had to wait for a 2nd trolley at times. Trolleys ran so late we didn't get a chance to do Maritime Museum (had pre-bought tickets, oh well). So, walk it and then do what you want with left-over time.

Have fun!

I appreciate the info! DD6 will love the "kitties" at the Hemingway house, and it will serve as an "educational" stop as well for her school. Personally, I'm looking forward to the "Little White House".

We stopped at the Truman White House last year when we had a few hours in port, they have a little museum with a couple of rooms with pictures and historical items and they don't (or didn't at that time) charge to take a look through though that little museum. It was quite interesting. If we have more time on another trip we plan on touring the whole house.

If you find your time limited or are getting a bit tired, you can at least stop and take a quick look at the museum or walk by the house or on the grounds. It is not far from the port, although when its hot or pouring buckets of rain, "not far" loses its meaning. :D
