Hello guys!

We've been thinking a lot about how we're going to pay for things whilst in the US - and I have a couple of questions about charging purchases to your room.

Firstly

I do regularly set up a room tab when we stay away, and I use my debit card to do this, however everything I've read about the KTTW Card always mentions "credit cards".

What is the process for arranging charging to your room? I assume you provide card details, but does it have to be a credit card? Or could it be a debit card, providing it's a mastercard or a visa?

Neither me nor my partner currently have a credit card, and neither of us particularly want one, however we could get one if needed.

Secondly

We have five people in one room (two adults and three children). I've read that everyone in the room gets their own KTTW card, are room charging privileges assigned to the whole room (and every card) or could we only allow certain cards to charge purchases?

Or, could we allow all cards to charge to the room, but have separate invoices for each card? Oh gosh, that sounds complicated so I guess not!

Thirdly (and finally!)

How do you guys manage children's spending money? We don't really want to bring lots of cash and in the past we've used travellers cards (such as the Post Office one, or Thompsons). Do you guys find Gift Cards work well for children? Can we top them up as and when we want to, with whatever amount?

We want to encourage them to manage their own spending (with our supervision!), so ideally we'd like to avoid getting one travellers card with all of our spending money on it. My partner suggested getting three travellers cards (in our name) and topping them up with the same amount each so that the girls can track how much they're spending online.

Thanks guys!

I would think you could designate a debit card to your KTTW card. We use a credit card and Disney automatically puts a limit on it within their system ($500, I think!) even though my cards' limit is much more! If you reach the limit, they will extend it for you. We allow our daughter to have charge privileges on her card and Disney will put a limit on it for you. Gift cards would be a great idea for your kids!! It gives them responsibility and makes them feel important and grown-up!! We are able to buy Disney gift cards in our local stores (not Disney stores) in $50 amounts, but not sure about your stores in Europe. Go to Disney's web site- they have a feature now called Live Chat. You type in a question and they answer almost immediately!! Have a magical trip!! Cheers!! :)

I used my debit card for charging to the room from KTTW cards.I just handed it over at check in. It was just DH and I that had charging privelidges, DD didn't but she is only 4, so I'm not sure at what age charging priveledges can start from. Possible age 10 as that is when a child becomes a Disney adult? :confused

I don't see why you can't add a debit card but check for fees. I know my Halifax debit card has 2 fees involved for every transaction abroad, £1.50 + a % (around 3%) so can be very costly. One year I compared using my debit card to using my Post Office credit card, it was a year we did 4 trips plus cruises etc so spent around $20,000 on the card, using my debit card would have cost me about £400 in fees. A fee free credit card can save a small fortune but only if you can off in full before they add any interest.

They ask you if children want spending rights. Bills are itemised for each card as far as I can remember.

Can't help much with kids spending money, Matt has never been one for wanting anything, as he got older he would take some money with him but almost always came home with it. Just last few trips he has bought himself a few cloths and Ipads but all from his own money now he is 18.

we always use debit cards (gold mastercard) linked to our KTTW
no problem whatsoever.

by default, children do not have charging privilege

you only get one invoice per room. It is itemised as Wayne said, and each purchase bears the name of the KTTW bearer.

Still there is no way to set up a limit on how much someone may spend.

Thirdly (and finally!)

gift cards seem to be the way to go

Thanks guys!

I'm incredibly relieved to know we can link the KTTW card to our debit cards and that they're itemised.

We're happy to allow the girls to have spending rights on the cards... all of their spending will be supervised anyway!

We did have another idea for the eldest - we saw that FairFX do a family and friends card which children can use from 14 up, we thought that might work well for the week we're at the villa and doing non-Disney stuff.

Disney should better say for European visitors that tey ask for a Visa, Master, American Express etc card. In Europe, the most of this cards are actually debitcards, because you must have the money on your account on as certain date. The US-CCard leaves always the opportunity to make down payments on it.
