I haven't eaten at either of those, but am addicted to Wafel & Dinges, especially the bacon & syrup wafel and the liege wafel with spekuloos spread. MMM

And I have never had spekuloos spread, of which I was pretty sure you made up until I googled it.

I wish I had made that up! I'd be a millionaire!! It's absolutely delicious! I've got jars of three different brands and am holding them until I can have a serious tasting.

You can get it here in the States, but it's called Biscoff.

Years ago I spent a lot of time in New Orleans for work. I stayed in hotels and ate in restaurants. One day I was in a hotel lobby and a man came in selling slices of homemade cake. He had 4-5 kinds on cake slices, each on a paper plate covered with plastic wrap. This was before the cupcake craze.

Now I love cake but did I really want to buy it out of a car trunk? ( psssst, Lady, you in the business suit, you want to buy some cake? $1.50 a slice. cheapest cake in town and homemade. I made it myself. I'll throw in a plastic fork and napkin!) Do I look like someone who buys cake from a trunk? Hey, I am an adventours diner. "OK I'll take the Red Velvet". From the first bite I was hooked. Then I see the hotel workers lining up. Later I found out from various establishments (including Emeril's Restaurant) that the Cake Man was N.O. icon. Everyone loved his cake and he had a sales route that I quickly learned so I could get my fix. The man should have had a beeper!

I changed careers and no longer have the French Quarter as a second home. This thread got me thinking. "What ever happened to The Cake Man?"
