DD developed a pretty high fever with no other symptoms around May 6th. We took her to the doctor after 5 days and while the doctor could not find any definite reason for her fever she went ahead and prescribed 10 days of amoxicillian as a precaution. DD seemed fine after she started the antibiotics and she finished her last dose yesterday. She was acting fine this morning but I got a call from the daycare around 10 saying her fever had come back and it was around 102.5. Well because she had just gotten off the antibiotics we took her back to the doctor. The doctor again didn't find any good reason for the fever and said that they had been seeing lots of kids this week with just a fever and no other symptoms. Just to be sure the doctor wanted to do a urine test just to rule out a UTI. Well this afternoon DH got a call that they found ketones in her urine and they want us to come back first thing tomorrow morning for a blood sugar test. :(

I know that ketones in the urine is a symptom of diabetes. DD will be 16 months on Wednesday and I would be crushed if we got such a diagnosis. My maternal grandmother had diabetes but it does not run in our families so that makes me a little hopeful. Can anyone else reassure us? I am pretty darn scared about this and I am just praying for just a weird anamoly in the test results.

Thanks!

I don't have any info for you but just wanted to give you a cyber hug(((()))). I hope you get good news tomorrow-keep us posted.

:grouphug: I don't have any information either, but you may want to PM Zurgswife. I believe two of her children have type 1 diabetes. She might be able to give you some information.

I wouldnt worry about diabetes yet. Since she has been running a fever the ketones may be from not eating or eating protein but little else. Also, if she was tested in the AM it isnt uncommon for kids to have some ketones in their urine first thing in the morning after sleeping through the night. I would wonder about the recurring fever and try and get to the bottom of that.

Don't worry:) I hope all goes well in the morning and will be thinking about you both!

In the absence of sugar in the urine, keytones is NOT a negative finding. It could mean that she is just not eating and is losing weight. (metabolizing fat). Those of us who have done the Atkins diet work hard to achieve those keytones in the urine.

DawnCt1 is right. Ketones in urine means you are metabolizing fat. It happened to me when I was pregnant...I was severely dehydrated from vomiting from gallstones. It is a sign of dehydration and that is probably why she needs to be seen. Probably a very fixable issue. Good luck, and hope she is on the mend!

Thanks Everyone!!!

**update**

Thankfully DD's blood sugar result was 80 which is normal. I figured that she was probably fine but your mind just can't help thinking about the worst case scenarios. Also, her fever was gone this morning. We still don't know what is causing it but maybe they are just really high teething fevers since she has been working on her molars for quite a while.
