Crankyshank, good point, not all of those were "hate fests", he took them to be "hate fests". I should have worded my post differently.

Oh and Lisa, I should have said I wasn't being literal about the hate fest. :smooth:

Charlie - I have a serious question for you.

According to your profile you are what 20? 21? If you support President Bush and his stance with the war so much why are you not enlisted? And maybe you are and we just don't know - and you certainly do not owe anyone an explanation. I was just wondering why a young man, with no family (or at least that we know of) who supported the war would not then enlist in the military/airforce/navy/marines. Are you in college? Are you registered with the ROTC? I'm being serious - I really want to know.

I remember going with my mother to vote, when I was very young. The voting booths in my district have not changed in all this time-some 40 years! My district is never a close race, but I would think that it might be time to rethink how our votes are recorded and counted.

I may be naive, but I think the true beneficiaries would be the citizens of our great country-whether Democrat, Republican or other.

Kyle, cut the crap. I would love to see election reform because VOTERS are being affected (both democrats and republicans). For one thing there needs to be some national standard.

And this from a Bush supporter! Thank you Miss Jasmine! As always you are able to cut right to the point. Please educate Charlie on how to do this okay? :)

Well I was trying to educate WWTBAM Fan with my reply, meaning that just cuz SOME republicans didn't see the need for election reform didn't mean ALL republicans felt that way, but sure yeah Charlie could get something from that too! Oh and thanks Amanda!

To clarify my posts--I do think the different voting methods are silly--but the way everything is set up it would take a lot of effort and Congress to help create and implement that change.

I don't think anyone should have to wait in line 8 to 10 hours to vote, and people in Ohio did. My understanding is that this was prevalent in precincts where college students voted.

While I'm not much of a tin foil hat-type, I think there was an orchetrated effort by the GOP to suppress turnout of the young voters. There is a generational shift going on among our 18-22 year olds, and the kids who are in college now are known to be far more engaged in their communities than kids their age group were in the last election. My 19 year old daughter does not have any friends or acquaintances who didn't vote November 2. Kids in class who weren't wearing "I voted" stickers were basically harassed by their peers. Most of these kids planned to vote after class--the polls in Minnesota are open until 8.

On the morning of the election, my daughter's phone rang. It was a robo-call, with caller ID disabled, encouraging her to vote and telling her the location of her polling place. The location was wrong. The robo-call said they were calling from Americans Coming Together, a progressive GOTV effort. But ACT does not direct people where to vote, they tell them how to find out where to vote. This call was an effort to send my daughter, and her roommates, to the wrong place to vote and discourage them from voting. Fortunately, my daughter has critical thinking skills and figured out that the election authorities probably knew better where she should vote than some random recorded phone call did.

I think standards for federal elections would be difficult to achieve. But everyone should be for fair voting. In the not-to-distant future, these kids who stood in line all day to vote, or were deliberately given wrong information about where to vote, will be part of the mainstream. I, for one, can't wait.

Thanks for sharing your story - it is very interesting.

Charlie, I'd like to invite you to come to my 6 year old son's basketball practice with us. He is learning not only how to play the game, but how to be a good winner and a good loser. The coach was explaining how these are life skills, not just related to basketball. :teeth:

I called them hate fests... you were using them as examples as to why you posted this thread. When you used them as examples I figured you meant you were against the subject and wanted to level the field.

And I seriously never understand this question. Why does it matter if someone supports the war whether they enlist or not? Support can come in a myriad of ways. Are people suggesting that those that don't go enlist are somehow being hypocritical? I, too, really want to know.

Let me backtrack a bit. The day already has come in Washington state. Pardon me if I don't get all worked up about Republicans crying about voter irregularities. Awwww, poor babies.

And I can assure you the Dems would have done the same thing had the first two recounts stood in Washington. They so much as said so when they were behind. You'd do well to not make yourself look foolish and actually research what is going on in Washington before attempting to comment on it. To date your comments make you look completely ill-informed. But, what's new?

I love it. Conservatives make stupid and baseless claims of Democrats committing voter fraud and when confronted with the facts, they run away from the issue. Again, the GOP is the party of voter fraud and in violation of a court order, the GOP used their normal tactics in the 2004 election. See.http://www.democrats.org/news/200210300001.html The GOP will never give up their attempts to suppress voter rights because they can not win in a fair election.

I love your selective "research". I see Washington State is curiously missing from your list

Hmmm, let's see. Columbus (Franklin County) Ohio is a college town, no? Some voters waited 7 hours to vote, while voting machines sat, unused, in a warehouse or in vehicles. The county board of elections, responsible for getting the machines out, didn't do so. The board, whose chairman is a Democrat. So how exactly would that equate to Republicans suppressing the vote?

First off the questions wasn't directed at you so therefore I don't really know why you care so much about why I ask.

I ask because I am curious. My Father was drafted during the Vietnam war, a war he did not support, but he fought. He didn't want to go at the ripe age of 18 but he served his country in the hopes that his children wouldn't have to. My Grandfather on my Mom's side was in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. And my Father's Father served in the Military during WWII - they both choose to enlist because they believed in what they were fighting for.

My husband could very easily enlist in the army but doesn't because he is a pacifist and doesn't support this war. My brother is the same age as Charlie and could also serve. My Father has told him that if the draft is reinstated that he would hope my brother would go and serve his duty - but otherwise he wanted his kids to go to college and be educated. Which we both did.

Charlie seems more then eager to jump in to defend President Bush and his stance on the war. And I wonder why he doesn't step up like my Grandfathers and Fathers did and enlist/drafted?

ha ha ha…hey Amanda..thanks. I will pay you if you post that I am 20 or 21 everyday…reading that made me feel young again.

I hate to admit it but I am an “old man” as my two sons like to say.

I don’t know where you got 20 from I don’t list my age…I don’t list anything about me don’t you know there are “nuts” on the internet? I’m not even from New Jersey.

I hope and pray that there will be peace in the world so my sons (7, 13) and future generations will not need to know/see the horrors of war. I hope that eventually Iraq will be free and able to stand on it’s own. It will be a BIG plus for the Middle East don’t you think?

OUR brave young men and women are fighting and yes dying for freedom. Not just freedom for Iraq but I feel freedom for the world. I think OUR president said in his speech yesterday …”with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world”. (yes I sallow everything he says..hook, line and sinker)

I would be scared **** to be fighting in Iraq. That is why I will always say that OUR armed forces are the bravest thing going. I thank them for it.

..and don’t think my family doesn’t know the horrors of war…the link below is to my Memorial Day thread about my uncle…..

You have got to see where my Uncle and his buddies live…….

God Bless America…God Bless our BRAVE men and women!

Sorry must have gotten your profile confused with someone else. You don't have to stress the word OUR with me I never deny that President Bush is our President or that the military is our military. So you may want to save it for someone else.

Matt Damschroder, the Director of the Franklin County Board of Elections, and who was ultimately responsible for getting the machines out, is a Republican. He is also the former Executive Director of the county's Republican Party.
