Well, it is my contention that the only "legitimate" reason for opposing gay marriage is on the basis of religious beliefs. If we remove the religious component of it by eliminating the term marriage from the discussion, then that reason for opposition is removed. And then the bigots will not have any rocks to hide behind and would just have to attempt to support it via their bigotry. Not a good place to be, in this country.

I have seen many people that state they would not be opposed to civil unions, it is the word Marriage that is the hang up. So, I'm more interested in getting people the rights they desire than being hung up on the word.

But that is the real issue here. We are supposed to have a real separation between Church and State but as you state, religious beliefs are the real roadblock to legalizing same sex marriage. If the only way to remove this roadblock is to stop issuing marriage licenses and begin issuing a license for civil unions then I would have no problem with that either. But you an I both know that the same people who are so freaked out by gays marrying will be just as opposed to them having the same legal license they enjoy. Remove the Bible and individual religious beliefs from the argument and there will be another argument to be made. Same people, same fears, same outrage. :sad2: There are still some folks who think that their way is the only way

Perfect point. :thumbsup2
Opposition to any rights or legal status/recognition for minorities has been addressed as "no special laws" for them. So to call all marriages civil unions could in effect be construed as making a special law for accomodation of gays.

Not if it was the same law for everyone.

Let me jump in and say, "Exactly! Gay people can get married just like anybody else. No one is stopping them. A gay man can marry a woman. It's the law and the law protects him to do so."

Just wanted to get that one out of the way.

Right, laws are about SEX, written FOR ol' white men. ;)

Your civil unions for all proposal is changing the law, gays want to be included in the present law. It's about equal access. I can't make it any simpler for ya.

Who you callin' ol' and white? I'm 42, hence middle aged, and I'm half Japanese so I'm a lovely off-white cream kinda color.

Would that be the off-white cream with a top note of yellow, beige, gray, or pink?

There is a distinction, yanno. :lmao:

Winter time, I'm a pale version with yellow undertones. Summer time, it turns to a pink which then fades to a lovely beigey tan. I guess that lends well to being a stealth gay, I blend in more ways than one. :cool1:

ETA: I do credit my half Japanese background for my soft supple skin. Very youthful! I have pearl cream running through my veins baby.

I thought it was about equal rights.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

My husband is Chinese American. We tease him about Pearl Cream because he has beautiful skin. Seriously, though. His Auntie Ming is about 150 years old and she looks 50.

And you and a few others baffle me. Since you didn't answer my previous question, I'm sure this one will be met with more hyperbole but here goes. Why do you get all up in arms and upset when you get called homophobic? Why is being called homophobic so upseting and offensive?

Because it's silly beyond belief. Howver, if I am homophobic perhaps you could offer to pay for a weekend or week or however long it is they hold Gay Days at WDW so you can cure me. You can choose the resort, although I must admit at this point in life I'm also slightly smallkidophobic so I'd prefer a resort like Caribbean Beach where we could hide out at a smaller side pool while the little rugrats go crazy in the main pool. But that's your call, it's your dime. The quick meal plan would also be fine, I'm sure I won't have enough of an appetite to enjoy the full meal plan due to all of those anxiety attacks. My wife and I will be your guests so we can be reeducated as we stroll through the parks together. Wouldn't that be fabulous?

Well, first of all, since evangelicals apparently plan on adopting most of them, then they probably would have followed their parent's beliefs. The rest of them, growing up in poverty with mothers who didn't want them, would probably not be all that political.

So you're saying that it's better to be dead than evangelical or poor? Either of the 2 choices can change over time, dead is always dead. However, I'm sure Margaret Sanger would be proud of you :thumbsup2

Don't worry though, I'm raising three little radicals here in North Carolina, so I'm doing my part.

Well that's good, at least you're doing your part to keep the progressive movement viable. Unfortunately most of the really fab ones are too responsible, not all extreme like Toni Vernelli (look her up, she is too vile for me to waste time on), but still not willing to do their part.

Since you're a SAHM you should take the time to look for a movie called Idiocracy.

Basically it shows what happens when the intelligentsia practice responsible birth control while the rabble don't, carried to an extreme. The society centers on, of all things, a sports drink. Without spoiling the plot too much, Luke Wilson tries to get to the bottom of why they use this drink for everything and all he can get is a dull-eyed look as they chant "because it has electrolytes". Kind of like the answer you get when you ask what change you voted for: "Change we can believe in". Well, we may never know the answer to exactly what change it was they voted for but, thanks to the good people of California, at least we know what change they don't believe in.

Me too. Although I turn to red when there's smoke coming of my ears.

54 here and not a wrinkle. My mother is 89: Not a wrinkle in her face.

It's that Med background.
