I know I've read somewhere (sorry- but I can't find it!) about people being able to sleep with the door of their verandah open. Is there something special that you brought with you to keep it open at night time?
Thanks!!

If you leave the door open, you will have NO air conditioning for the entire cabin. The suction created when the door is open draws it from the room. Leaving it open would cause it to be VERY uncomfortable in your cabin.

The cabin stewards have a wood device that keeps doors propped open for cleaning, but I doubt if they would let you borrow it for an entire cruise.

Hope this helps

DH and I slept with our veranda door open on our Jan 2002 cruise. It stayed open by itself. The temps were cool at night and it was very comfortable for sleeping, but if the weather is warmer or the humidity high, I don't think it would be comfortable. On our October cruise, we didn't leave the door open.

I kept the verandah door open every minute we were in the room. It stayed open without a bit of trouble. The outdoor temps last week were in the 70's and I was happy not to have the a/c on (I hate a/c...). We were very comfortable termperature-wise, and I loved the fresh, sea air. The only "problem" was the noise. It did get a little loud, but I loved the sound. DD8 felt it interfered with her enjoyment of the Disney channel on TV (ask me how many times an 8 yo can watch the Lion King on a week!!) but as you can imagine, her "concern" was of little relevance to moi!

We kept our verandah door open every night last year during our December cruise. It stays open on its own. The only noise was the wind and waves, and the air was perfect temperature for sleeping.

Even during the day we had the door open for the fresh sea air. It was not humid and was not too warm. Just like a day at the beach. The room was filled with sunshine and fresh air.

The fresh air is the main reason I booked a verandah for our Dec. 14 cruise this year.

During the summer months, it is way to humid to leave the door open, even at night. Actually, Disney encourages you to keep the door closed so the A/C doesn't have to work overtime!!!

I personally would not (COULD NOT) live without A/C!! We live in Florida and it is on 24/7/365. And I certainly would not have the verandah door open for any length of time. My DH spends most of his time out there -- he LOVES it. I do too, but still love my A/C.

If you DO keep your verandah door open most of the time, I think it would be courteous to turn down your A/C to conserve energy and not put a strain on the A/C for the ship (and possibly others like ME - LOL). ;)

We were on the November 2nd cruise and I kept the door open every night also. I love the sound of the waves and quite a few times it was too breezy and we had to close it somewhat. I do not like air conditioning at all and the first thing I did was turn it way up. Of course I am the only one that likes the heat, so I had to give in a little and shut the doors when we were in St. Marteen cause it was hot there. If it was up to me I told my dh I wouldn't even have air conditioning in the house. (But of course it's not totally up to me:rolleyes: )

when reading these posts in regard to the door *staying* open. How many of you did as the DH and I did? Upon entering our room for the first time and anxious to see the view from the verandah we tried to OPEN the door......we pushed and pushed and twisted locks and turned everything only to finally discover the door slid open. :o duh!

Laura24 . . . you brought back some funny memories!! We must have spent what seemed like an hour trying to figure out how to get that door open!! Having a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering, I thought the door MUST have been broken because I certainly could figure out how to open it!! I lost track of what was locked, unlocked, etc. I just couldn't push or pull the door open with the lock in either position. My DS3 managed to slide the door slightly open after I'd given up and thought I'd just call maintenance to "fix it". My son saved me (again) from further embarrasment!! I must have missed the class where they talked about "door operations".

On our last night at sea, my sister and I kept the veranda door open when we went to bed. Being that the air conditioning vents were on the bed side of the cabin, we closed the privacy drapes. We got the benefit of the air conditioning and the sound of the sea. If only we had thought to do that on our first night!

When we went on the 3-night cruise this past October we planned on doing just that. Came back from dinner that last night, planned to open the door and relax for a bit before turning in. When we opened the door, imagine our surprise when a bird flew in! Once we figured out it was a bird (not a bat) and "shooed" it back outside, we collapsed in fits of laughter.

Only problem was the dang thing decided it liked to hang out in the rafters of our verandah. Nothing we could do would make it leave! So, that night, we slept with the door closed.

The simplest *things* in life can give you the most embarrassing moments! It was hysterical when we finally figured the door out. DH can build highways and such, but all that mechanical know how must have been checked at the gate in Newark....it sure wasn't on board with us!:)
