Hi!

I'm Nicole, in Massachusetts. I'm 49, with a DH, an away-at-college DS, and two spoiled cats. Some days I'm a substitute teacher, and some days I look after my "niece" and "nephew" - twin 4-year-olds.

My main goal for December is BALANCE! The holidays can be such a busy time, and we can be tempted to skimp on sleep and healthy habits in favor of getting everything done. I want to keep making time for exercise, even if it's only a few minutes a day, and really take care of myself so I can enjoy the season.

Hi. I’m Cristin, a kindergarten teacher from PA. I live with my husband, teenage boys/girl twins and black lab. My goal for December is to maintain my weigh and exercise routine. I would like to improve my eating habits which have been all over the place lately. And I need to do better at getting 8 hours of sleep each night.

I’m Sandy, retired HS librarian from
PA. My husband and I are motivated to keep healthy and active so we can keep up with our 9yr old grandson!

This month I need to focus on balanced eating (great phrase, MickeyMom76!) and get out and walk at least 5 days a week. When I can’t, I have a plan to follow indoors. I picked up the December issue of Woman’s Day for an article called Walk Strong All Winter. It has a two routines-one for at home and one if you have a mall nearby (I do not-nothing closer than 30-40 minutes). Check it out if you have a chance.

I am Stephanie from Ohio. I have 2 kids (12 and 13) and have been married for 15 years. My life is pretty busy but really trying to get healthy. This month I am going to work on working out more and doing better not he days I am not at work. I also want to eat better this month.

Thanksgiving did not go as planned for us. DD (12 year old) work up Wednesday felling really sick and dizzy. She had her scoliosis check with her doctor that morning (thankfully they think she is fine and does not have it but did an x-ray to be sure) so I had them check her ears just to make sure that was not causing it. They were fine and she was feeling better so we went on with the rest of the day. The dizziness came back but I ignored her and figured she was just dramatic. Which she does often. By the night she had a headache and in her room in pitch black and no noise. It continued most of Thursday as well and added a sore throat to the list of symptoms. We decided to keep her home just in case she was sick. She also complained of her arms and legs feeling funny. So DH and DS went to DH's family for lunch/dinner and then cam home for DS and myself to go to my mom's for dessert. So I missed all the great food. I took DD to the doctor on Friday and they think it was just a virus. By Saturday she was back to normal.

Since I missed all the good food I made a mini Thanksgiving dinner today. This was also to test out a new recipe for the turkey/chicken to use at Christmas when I cook for DH's family. It turned out great and very juicy.

Hi, I'm Lizanne a singleton living in Seattle. My quest for healthy living got derailed a bit in November, so I am needing to get back on track.

I really like the goals that have been posted already focusing on balance for the month, and will pick that as one of my own. I'm also going to stick with getting outside for a walk at least once a week.

Over the weekend I stuck very close to home and did very little, and I'm grateful to have been able to do so. Saturday I never got out of my PJs: Sunday I did run some errands then came home and got back in to my PJs. HBO was running a free preview over the weekend, so I binge watched several series. And I finally got a knitting project going that is giving me the right amount comfort and mental rest, so I've really sunk in to it. At the same time I was having to monitor activities at work all weekend, so it is difficult to feel really refreshed this morning, even though I did so little.

This weekend is the memorial service... it is already weighing heavily on me. In addition to being on-call for work 24x7, I feel like I've also been on-call for my SIL 24x7 and I'm wearing a bit thin, so trying to think about what I can do for myself this week to get in the best place to navigate it all. A pedicure or massage would be something nice. And eating properly.

So that's my motivation for this week... finding the right balance between taking care of myself and supporting others.

Today is not going as planned and all I want to do is have a good cry but I am at work. I need to hold it together. First DD has called me twice today about being dizzy. We are trying to get her to make it though the day but not sure that will happen. I have an email into one of her teachers to see if by chance this could be her anxiety. It is either a virus like to doctor said and it is still running it's course (she was fine most of Saturday and all of Sunday) or maybe it is something like her iron or sugar levels. If it continues this week I will push for a blood test.

Then in the middle of this I get a call for her doctor with the results from her scoliosis x-ray. She does have it. It is very mild at only a 6% curve but they said this might be what is causing her back pain. There is nothing to do right now. We will have a follow up in 6 months. This is what has me upset. This is just one more thing for her and I hate that she has to go through all of this. I know this is very minor and nothing to really worry about but I do. My mom has it too and didn't even find out until she was in her 40's. Hers in minor too. This is all a shock too as the doctor seemed pretty certain she did not have it. I will be fine once the shock wears off.

I didn't get a chance to work out since this was going on through the 12 o'clock hour and I still needed to eat. I will get back at it tomorrow or if I can tonight I will go up to the rec.

Good Morning, Happy Tuesday (and Happy Snow Day if you're near me!) Schools are closed here, so I'll be Christmas decorating this morning and shoveling snow this afternoon.

    For today's topic ~
What's your personal holiday pitfall, and your plan to deal with it this year?

Mine is probably goodies. There are treats all over this month! My plan is to remember that the first three bites are the best, and take small portions.

I also have to say the goodies...especially Christmas cookies. They are so easy to just grab one and eat...then another and another. I definitely went downhill over Thanksgiving break. So I need to come up with a plan for December. A friend of mine posted this picture on Instagram. It reminded me that I used to drink a cup of water when I felt hungry between meals or before bedtime. And if I found myself getting really hungry at night, I’d just go to sleep. So for now, I’m going to try those two things from this list.

My downfall over the holidays is baking cookies. I love cookie dough more then cooked cookies. I just try to remind myself that they have raw eggs in them and to keep it to a minimum.

I am doing a bit better today but I am worried about DD. She is still dizzy and saying her arms and legs feel funny. Last night she said her back hurt and when she showed me it was where her kidneys are. I am starting to think this is not a virus and something else. Tomorrow will be 7 days with being dizzy other then Sunday. I am trying to decide on if I should call the doctor or wait until the end of the week and see if it goes away.

That would be sugar, as always. Sweets, treats, warm sugary drinks... I love it all. I just can't tho, I can't go there again, I have to listen to my body and not let the sugar monster in my brain gain control. I was feeling pretty crappy yesterday, but this morning I realized I am actually getting a cold, so I've started taking the stuff my doctor recommended that helped so much last time... fingers crossed it does the same this time.

Yesterday I read Susan Miller's December horoscope and it is supposed to be a pretty spectacular month on many fronts, including making good progress and showing good results in healthful matters. I'm down for that, and can use any support that's out there, even if its coming from way out in the stars. There was also quite a lot mentioned about romance and finding someone who "gets me", which struck me as such a wonderful thing. I'm down for that as well.

I made an appointment for waxing tonight and one for a pedicure tomorrow night, so that'll help with gaining some balance, looking after myself. Saturday morning I'm going to go out to my favorite yarn store, who is having their annual holiday makers market. Plus the place I went to the botanical dyeing workshop is having a market as well. It'll be a nice drive out to the country, to the mountain foothills, which is always a peaceful break from the city. Plus there's snow in the mountains already, so it'll be extra pretty.

    My holiday downfall?

I enjoy cooking and baking-and I have a hard time resisting cookies and other treats once their in the house.
If I can keep up my activity level and not eat out very often, hopefully I will be able to maintain my weight. Drinking water is a great idea-for me, it’s not really hunger, more that it’s in the house and mindless snacking.

    Good articles!
