We are doing a quick trip--5 nights--in September before DH heads to Afghanistan. :cool1: Originally we were doing Shades of Green with the AFS tickets. Then I thought it would be nice to use the military resort discount and use the AFS tickets. Then free dining came out and wouldn't it be nice if everything was already paid for--including meals--when we get there. So, we are currently booked at POR with free dining and 2 day base tickets which we will upgrade to the AFS tickets. But now I keep thinking should we just go back to SOG or the resort discount and pay for food OOP. :confused3

There are 7 of us on this trip--so two rooms. DH and I, our 3 kids (DD17, DS14 and DS11) as well as my nephew and his son (age 4).

And to think I have until the end of July (final payment) to keep mulling this over!:scared: :scared1:

With 7 of you, why don't you stay at a DVC resort in a two bedroom (full kitchen, washer/dryer)? You can rent from a DVC member on this site or book directly through Disney.

Someone far more knowledgeable in this area will be along soon to correct me, but can you "upgrade" MYW tickets to AFS? I thought they were a completely separate ticket entity. And I think each service member is allowed a maximum of 6 AFS tickets per year.

Yes, we can upgrade them as long as the ticket we are upgrading to is equal or higher in value (according to the ticket sticky!)--so we would have to get the AFS with water parks & more. We will use the 6 AFS tickets for the adults and upgrade my great-nephew's ticket from the 2 day base ticket to the 4 day hopper.

If you're happy with transportation etc. at SOG I would stay there. Rooms are much larger than Mods. There is a spreadsheet floating around that you can plug in your dining choices to see if DDP would really save you money. For us most times it does. I would think however that the $ you would save staying at SOG would be just about a wash with free dining at another resort. Lastly, thanks to your husband for his service to our country AND to you and your family for sacrificing to allow him to do so! May God bless and keep him safe over there!

Thank you very much for your kind words! We have stayed at SOG before and usually just walk over to the Poly for the monorail. My DH doesn't do buses so we will also have a car available to drive to the other parks.

New dilemma, DH is now leaving a week earlier than expected so I need to rebook the trip, airfare and my ADRs so that we are home a few days before he needs to leave. Oh joy!

How is SOG to stay? I was messing around on Mousesavers and saw that they are offering a special in September or January to any honorably discharged vets. I was thinking of taking advantage of this. Do you still get the same "Disney" feel as the other resorts? The price can't be beat that's for sure! The busses seem like a bit of a hassle though. We drive down anyway but like not having to drive our own car around property. Tell me about the resort if you would.

SOG does not have a Disney feel. It is a military resort and run as such. Personnel are nice but not like Disney CMs. However it is a good place to stay with spacious rooms and good location.
