Katrina's Here!

Why is everyone freaking out about a little rain and very mild winds? I live in Michigan and we get a storm, the winds are routinely up to 50-90 MPH.

Peg, and all Florida residents, take care down there.

We are arriving on Sunday morning and are praying that it clears by then.

Be careful of what you say, mild winds to some are not mild to others.

umaangel00, it's not the winds that are the bad part of these storms. Being a Floridian living near the beach, we regularly get strong winds. The bad part is all the rain, esp. if the hurricane slows down, and the tornados that can spin off and storm surge. Rainfall of 6-10 inches is possible and up to 15 inches. Plus, there are a lot of low-lying areas down here that flood easily. We've had more rain than usual this year too. I couldn't handle your winters up there - way too cold for this native Floridian :)

Because alot of us have our vacations planned and we're well aware of the damage the hurricanes caused last year. A storm can intensify in strength (especially over the warm water of the Gulf) very easily.

Keep checking your airline's web site. Some airlines have already cancelled flights in and out of FLL starting at 3 PM today.

Those are just for flights in and out of Miami, West Palm, Fort Lauderdale. No flights have been cancelled to or from Orlando, and most likely will not be.

:sad2:
hmmm not so nice ....

well I think it is what's to come that has people starting to worry - have you ever seen the destruction left by tropical storms and hurricanes?

the September 2001 tropical storm that hit around Sarasota ripped part of our roof off, damaged an entire room and damanged most of our windows....

We're scheduled to land in Orlando aorund 10:45 tomorrow morning.

It looks like Orlando will just have a rainy breezy day tomorrow, I see no reason why they would cancel Orlando bound flights.

I've checked Delta and JetBlue-they have cancelled a lot of flights, it's true-but they are to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm, Miami etc. All south Florida.
No one has cancelled any flights in or out of Orlando yet.

I am the world's biggest worrier--and I was a wreck the last couple of days worrying if our flight would be cancelled..but now from all accounts (and i ahve been on every website and been glued to the Weather Channel) it looks like Orlando is well out of the path of any significant storm.

I live about 2.5 hours southwest of orlando and they have already cancelled schools and classes at the local college. However, I think the only thing that worries people is the rain and flooding (i live on the coast). The parks should be ok and open, maybe just a little wet.

We will be there next Saturday, I hope all leave or cancel their plans in fear of the storm :umbrella: . That will make it very secluded for the rest of us next week. I know that sounds selfish. :wave2:

I just drove from Broward County (Ft lauderdale/davie area) to Miami and yes the weather is getting nasty but I honestly do not think this will be that bad.(IMHO) Last years storms were way scarier. I am sure those going to Orlando will be fine, my mom is driving up there tomorrow afternoon and she will just see what the situation is and then take it from there.

The eye is supposed to be over us at about 8pm tonight which is way earlier than first predicted.

LOL I can understand about our winters up here. I have lived here my whole life and I still hate the winters. I can't even drive in the winter time so DH has to drive me everywhere. It's sad. LOL. I want to move to either North Carolina (southern or maybe Asheville area) or Georgia (thinking Snellville). Just so I can get out of the winter.

We get tornadoes all the time so those don't scare me much. I think the winds from a hurricane or TS would scare me but the torrential downpours might be worst.

To all of you in FL, stay safe! We were at WDW (Polynesian) last year for Hurricane Jeanne. :umbrella: The cast members were awesome and we only lost one day due to park closures. We were given a comp ticket good for 5 years! The next day was absolutely beautiful :sunny: and any damage (which was much less than the previous 2 (?) hurricanes) was very quickly cleaned up and it was business as usual. By the way, while we are on this topic, can anyone tell me when hurricane season ends? We will be down this year 11/29-12/6. It's all over by then, right? :scared:

LewisC: Thanks for posting that link to the MCO page: It was a great relief to see.

I hadn't thought to check there. I have been on the phone numerous times with the airtran airlines. My flight is scheduled to land at MCO Friday @11:30 AM.

Here's hoping everyone makes it safely into Orlando.

Just get me out of philly.

Why don't I see any message from the airport on that page?

The Hurricane Warning for areas north of the Jupiter Inlet was lifted at 4:45 pm.

That means anywhere from Martin County north is out of the danger area. The storm should be coming ashore within the hour and then will be traveling across the state to the west coast.
