~ Kate Plus Eight ~

I'm not sure if this is what C.Ann meant but here is something she said about putting food on the table.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/16/kate-gosselin-on-leno-im_n_540241.html

holy cow... she actually says "so I can literally put food on the table and send my kids to school" ... wow.

What a thing to say, when looking at Kate's lifestyle vs. the lifestyles of people who really do have to struggle to make ends meet.

On the other thread, it's been mentioned over and over that there are many changes (big and small) that could be made to the Gosselin lifestyle to make it more affordable. But, those reasons are generally met with comments like, "they deserve that lifestyle, etc. and why should they have to give it up?" and I don't get that. Why is Kate Gosselin held to a different standard of living than we are?

So comments on the show last night???

I thought Mady said it perfectly when they were at the 3rd party for the little kids..."we only get one day, why do they get 3 parties? Nobody cares about me". I hope Kate is putting away a lot of money for the older girls therapy. And as for her hair....to me it looks weird in the back, I could see where the extensions start and her hair ends. Is that normal???

I thought Mady was being a whiny kid at that point. It's not like she and Cara were excluded! They were right there enjoying everything the younger kids were getting as well.

And Kate's extensions are TERRIBLE!!! I don't know why it took so long to do them because they look like a kid did them.

On that show, I had the impression when I watched it, they were discussing DWTS and why Kate took the job. She said she would work at anything (and although I felt it was in poor taste, at the time Leno had asked about Jon's employment and of course they joked about her not knowing of any). She is putting food on the table and her kids are going to private school..and she is paying for it, not welfare. If some thought it was a whine, well, it prob was.
I haven't heard people say they deserve to live a certain way (although I always felt my own kids deserved the best I could give them). However, if she is willing to work at jobs (yes, yes, I know the kids are 'working' but at that time, they were talking about HER working on DWTS), and this is how she wants to live, and can work to afford it, fine. The house is wonderful, and I'm glad so far the kids are able to stay in their school. They have had a lot of privacy in that school.
I hope she is very successful on Twist, and that will pay her bills. I'm not thinking she can count on Jon to put food on the table.

They couldn't stress enough about fans either love her or hate her and the bodyguard revealing she doesn't know about the threats??
This women has not changed one bit since her divorce from Jon. She will use anyone she can as a punching bag. I think Mady & Cara were treated as staff rather than her children. Everything revolves around her 6 little cash cows. If it wasn't for those "6" there would be no show. Kate has no talent.:sad2:

But you still watched the show?? :confused3

I liked the new show. Is this going to be a weekly thing. It nice to see Mady is still the same lol.

I agree people either love or hate Kate.

Doris, it's not JUST that show. Kate uses the "I must work" mantra in some form or fashion nearly every time the camera is on her. And yes, people say they've earned the house, deserve to stay in their home, should be able to stay in their schools, etc. and your comments echo that

IMO, There's a difference in giving your children the best and giving them the best you can AFFORD. It's hard to buy into Kate earning (reportedly) $500,000 and saying she's having trouble putting food on the table, no matter what the context.

I haven't read the whole thread...I am sure there is the usual positive and negative comments about Kate and the whole situation. I just wanted to say I think Kate looks INCREDIBLE. I didn't get to watch the whole show, hopefully it will be repeated. I will admit, part of the entertainment for me was watching her snap at Jon. I know that sounds awful, but that absolutely was one of the main reasons I watched.

Those children are adorable. I enjoy watching them grow up.

I just happen to think that if she's willing to work for it, she's welcome to the house. But just like other's who live in nice houses (yes, some are much nicer than others) it may take extra work to keep it. Do you not think she has to continually defend herself? Many people would rather see her in a small house or apartment, working double shifts as a nurse, kids with a sitter and in public school, and seem to resent her even when it's just her working. I'm not paying for her house, the kids school, and if she's willing to work for it, then I guess the word you think I echo'd that she deserves it, well, as long as my taxes aren't supporting that house, good for her and the kids. Perhaps she believes her kids deserve the best she can provide for them, even with all the criticism she takes (and some she may deserve, but why because she says she is taking jobs to provide for them?). I didn't see her say she was having trouble putting food on the table, but that she is working any job to keep that food. Good for her.
That said, I don't think this show will keep going, so I hope she is successful in her other endeavors, even though some people hope that falls flat as well.

Kate said, "When work comes my way I do it so I can literally put food on the table and send my kids to school."

I guess I'd assume as long as she is working, like other working parents, she'll use her money to support the kids and that includes putting food on the table. Should she have turned down DWTS? Maybe only have the show with the kids? As long as she's working, I guess she can afford the food and the school.

We liked the new show! My dd5 said "Oh good, our kids are back!" They remember watching JK8 last year when they announced their divorce. I think this show actually is a great lesson to other kids that kids can come through divorce and still be happy.

I also thought Kate was much more mellow....and the bottom line is Kate's managing strategy for 8 kids is very direct. That's who she is.....I don't hate her for it. I don't take it as a personal affront.

We'll watch again. My kids watched it again on TIVO this morning.

I kind of have an issue with the use of "exploitation" constantly in regards to the Gosselin children. Exploited children are those who are forced into child labor because they're cheaper and their little fingers fit better into nice heavy machinery.
I can buy that notion, so let me try and frame it another way...

I have a problem with the show knowing that the track record of the development of such children, who have had their childhoods put under such a media microscope, and what happens to them as adults often isn't good... particularly when the filming occurs during a traumatic period in their lives. I've mentioned it periodically, but I see a lot of parallels between the Gosselins and America's first ever "Reality TV" family: The Louds, of PBS's "An American Family". The kids were teens in that mini-series that was designed to be final nail in the coffin of the concept of American "Ward & June Cleaver" style families was shot. "American Family" also highlighted a divorce of the couple that occurred during filming. Later, one of the Loud children admitted that he often acted out for the cameras during filming because he wanted the air time. He later was quoted as saying "TV ate my family". In neither case were the TV cameras the "cause" of the breakup, but they clearly were a catalyst.

I'm also troubled by the fact that as opposed to other such realities shows, like the oft contrasted Duggars, this show has become the family's "life" (and not the other way around). That's an unsustainable model and a recipe for problems both financially and emotionally.

I guess the only "good" news about the revived show is that the emphasis has reportedly changed and that the kids won't be filmed every waking hour as before during production periods.

I stand corrected. I did see that show. I took that to mean she would take any job to support/feed her kids. And I guess that would include Kate + 8, not just her jobs, although they were talking about DWTS on the Leno show.
I would assume after all the legal bills, there might not be a lot left from the original show.

Jon pays 22,000 a month in child support. And if he weren't Kate would be on the Today show telling everyone.

Ill probably keep watching the new show just cause the kiddos are adorable but I don't like Kate as much as I use too. I don't hate her, I just don't relate to her anymore. I miss the old Kate.

I watched both shows for the most part -- I did DVR them, so I will watch them in their entirety later.

The 'tups are getting so big! Hannah used to be the "big" one, but it looks like the others have caught up to her. I enjoyed seeing them again. And great advertising for Discovery Cove!

"Kate's World" was interesting too. Sometimes it helps to see things from another angle.

It's interesting that TLC managed to step forward without Jon.

Where is Jon getting $22,000 per month? Does he have an actual job?

Yes, I know he does pay that out of their past earnings. So, are you saying that Kate shouldn't take jobs to keep the money flow? I don't get where you are going with that. I don't imagine that support money fund he is paying from (reportedly) will last forever.

You do realize what you saw was her getting ready to do some press/red carpet thing for DWTC, right? This was not her "everyday life."

Yes I do realize this, but in actuality, this is her everyday life NOW. She is promoting a book, DWTS, etc. I watched the last 1/2 hour and she was in that chair 3xs. Sorry, I just can't relate to her anymore.

You're assuming that Jon actually does pay what he has been ordered to pay. The court would not have assigned that number if his assets didn't allow it.

I don't understand why people have such a problem with her making money. Would it be okay if she was working 9-5, being away from the kids daily and struggling to make ends meet? Sounds like a lot of judgement and jealousy.

More power to her if she can afford that lifestyle.

My opinion. You do what you have to,to make a living for 9 people. A living that can give your kids great experiences, private school. Ect. Would I? You bet I would. Someone has to bring home the bacon. Jon certainly isn't helping off camera.

Wow--1st post and you know everything?? How do you know Jon isn't helping off camera? He's paying $22,000 a month in child support, etc... does that not count for anything?? Read the Jon & Kate thread and you will see everyone is entitiled to their opinion!:confused3

I just had to buy People magazine last week (because kate and kids were on the cover ;)) and noticed Hannah had slimmed down quite a bit.

I'm of the opinion that she is going to be quite a stunner!

I loved last nights' shows!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including aidesg1. It's a discussion about a tv show. Why so hostile?
