Hey. I saw the dancer thread and wondered if we had any martial artists on the Dis as well. I didn't want to hijack the dancer thread, so I thought I would start my own!

So, any karate practitioners here? I study Shotokan - I have since 2001 and have a brown belt now. :)

I used to do tae - kwan - doe (sorry if I spelt it wrong, I haven't dont it for 5 years) I got to the blue belt then I had to quit because it got way to expensive..

Yeah, it does get very costly. My master (or sensei, shihan, or whatever you want to call him!) lets me teach the lower ranks, so I only pay half of the monthly membership fee.

My master, oh boy, he was not such the wisest, the price a month was like 25 dollars and then he all the suddon brought it up to 150, we quit right away, my friend says the master sewed someone because they would not pay.

Nope. Swimming, skating and dance here.

In November I will get my second degree black belt in Tae-Kwon do.

I am up to breaking two concrete blocks with a spinning back side kick.

I met a friend on VMK titled: IGotMyBlackBelt. So now I can walk around saying her title.

When I first started the Master did not think I would last 3 days. He told us all to do 50 jumping jacks - I did ten and fell on the floor - I can now do 75 jumping jacks. So everyone is surprised that I have lasted as long as I have.

Be honest and always stand for justice, respect and help each other, be loyal and courteous, Tae-Kwon. (that is our motto)

Fly :thumbsup2

Great story! You never know what you can do unless you stick with it! (I still stink at push ups, though).

IGotMyBlackBelt is on my list of friends! I met her in a trade room and we started chatting about karate, or in VMK speak, "car ah tea"! She keeps encouraging me to go for my black belt, but I don't really care about the belts. I just like the discipline of karate and the camaraderie at the dojo. I am also starting a karate club at work (a high school) for kids who cannot afford to take classes. It will give them a taste of martial arts, and maybe someone will really take to it!

I have done karate for 3 years so far :). I'm still doing it too. My sensei lets me help and teach the class alot with my friend. I dont want to brag.....but she said me and my friend are the best in the class....SHE LOVES MY KICKS! :D

Cool! What kind of karate do you study?

I have heard of it. Like Shotokan, Seido is a very traditional form of karate. Many of the schools around here (Rhode Island) are more like sport karate -all flash, no substance.

Orange is a higher rank in Shotokan than yellow. Our belts go:

White
Kare Yellow (a white belt with a yellow stripe down the middle)
Yellow
Orange
Blue
Green
Purple (two kyus of purple)
Brown (two kyus of brown)
kare Shodan
Shodan (black)

What organization do you belong to? JKA Maybe? I'm ASKA. Our belts are just a bit different. We have one purple and three browns. And I'm not sure what Kare means. Is that a junior rank? Junior signifying not adult (with no disrespect intended. I'm just referencing age.) Right now I'm Brown III
