Kansas Relays

Nothing like a track meet to provide some challenging practice with the camera. Took my Canon S3 to the Kansas Relays and finished with some nice shots.

I was shooting in mode P so I could set my own ISO. If I had thought about it, I would have changed back to 100 for the Alan Webb picture, but I was kind of excited to see the race as an old distance runner myself.

The winning high jumper in the High School division cleared an astounding 7 feet 3.25 inches

I like the action you were able to capture in these photo's. The high jump and pole vault specifically were great.

Where were you sitting to capture these?

Can you provide any other info on the pics like how much of the zoom you used etc?

Most of the pics were on full zoom from the stands - I didn't have a field pass or anything, just a run-of-the-mill spectator. The pole vault in particular I remember being about 30 rows up in the stands, but I was closer in for the high jump picture. I'll check my notes and post info on settings/locations in a while.

Just for comparison's sake here's one on full manual mode from Thursday night under the lights. That made it even more challenging, and I didn't get very many good shots. However, here's one that at least came out mostly clear. Full manual mode, full zoom (I was 30 rows up at the other end of the stadium), cropped just a bit. IS0 200; f 3.5 (widest aperture possible when zoomed); shutter 1/200

Adjusted lighting in Photoshop Elements, and ran it through the default settings in Imagnomic's Noiseware Community Edition.

Thanks. I've accepted the limitations of my equipment, and found that I can work within those limitations and still get nice results. There are some shots that I just won't be able to get, so I'm concentrating on getting the most out of the shots I *can* get

WOW is all I can say. We had a son who ran cross-country/track in high school (he graduated in 06) and I could only wish I had some pictures that were that good. My camera is a Canon Power Shot A80. OLD OLD OLD now. I was the designated team mom and in charge of photos every year. You can't even imagine how many pictures I took that didn't turn out and if they did, well they were no where near your's. I've been lurking here on these boards trying to decide on a new camera (p & s or dslr). I'm scared of the dslr but after seeing your photos I could be easily talked into the S3 or S5 (that's available now, correct). Our youngest son is starting middle school next year and is going to be doing cross-country/track so I want to make sure I purchase a camera that will fit my needs. Enough said. Yours photos are great. Thank You so much for sharing!
