I'll be at a convention downtown and would love advice on restaurants in the area. Love Italian, American, Creole and Soul Food. Any advice?

A bit south of downtown, in an area call the Crossroads, is Lidia's. Great Italian food. It's a short cab ride.

Soul Food - Peach Tree Restaurant - 1512 E 18th St. Haven't been there, but our resident office food taster says it's great. It's east of downtown, again a short cab ride.

As for American Benton's at Crown Center is good. The service can seem slow, but it's meant to be that way.

It's more cajun than creole, but Jazz (a small chain) is good and can have live entertainment from time to time. Plentiful portions.

None of these are walking destinations. Get a cab from your hotel and have their phone number for the return ride. No hailing on the sidewalk here ; )

If you are willing to go a little north of downtown (past the river), Cascone's is a great Italian restaurant.

Ooooh. That made me think of Garozzo's. Recently reopened after a fire last year. Robbers used a cutting torch to break into the safe and ended up burning the place down.

Ridiculously expensive for dinner, but great for lunch is Herford House.

Now I'm hungry.

I'll second the Hereford House (anything BBQ or steak in Kansas City is usually good).

Cascones and Garozzo's are also good. I think this is actually the same Italian family that own's both of these.

I'll second Jazz, it's more Mid-Town than downtown....definitely worth the trip.

And Peach Tree is unbelievable, it's in the 18th & Vine district.....close to the Negro Baseball Hall of Fame and Jazz Museum. And while you're in the area, you may want to try the World Famous Author Bryant's BBQ (off 18 and Brooklyn), they have the best BBQ in town IMO.

Another one of my personal favorites is Kona Grill, it's on the plaza.....nice area to walk around and shop too. They serve a variety of foods that include sushi and I'm not sure what you would consider the other options there really..but, I LOVE their Macadamia Nut Chicken.......makes me hungry just thinking about it!
