Kali River Rapids question

If you really don't want something wet AT ALL, then maybe bring a Zip-lock baggy that you could store in your bag or pack before and after the ride. The big thing in the middle is not huge, and it is never garanteed that everything in it stays dry. Usually they do, but you never know.

We ALWAYS get soaked on Kali, but we usually go in July, so it is not that bad. It is really refreshing. Make sure that is close to or THE last ride of the park you plan on going on. Last time we forgot about this and went right to it, happy to get on without a wait :lmao: . We went to It's Tough To Be a Bug next and I remember dripping in that waiting area before you enter the theater, and then when we left the theater, the seats are soaked! I felt so bad for the incoming people. :rolleyes1

We wore water-proof sandles when we went on last time, and even though we were slipping and sliding in them for the first 5-10 minutes after getting off, they were almost completely dry, and our feet were too. As for the ponchos, good luck! They are tricky to use because if you don't put them on a certain way, the water comes splashing right into the poncho. We were wearing ponchos on Splash Mountain (it was raining), and I think we got even more soaked than if we hadn't used the ponchos, but you might want to try them anyway.

Good luck with trying to stay dry, but I think by the time you walk around the park in the 90 degree weather, you will want to get wet, lol. :sunny:

I haven't read any of the other post, so sorry if I'm repeating anything. Basically it all depends on what angel you go down the incline. My mom and I went one this ride and didn't get wet at all, so we decided to go on it a second time, and we got drenched from head to toe, and everyone else in our tube was relatively dry. So yeah, it all depends on what angel yoy go down the second hill.

I've avoided it too but this trip I am saying Why not? I'm not afraid to get wet but my main concern is the camera, anyone put theirs in something that absolutely kept it dry they can suggest ? I get the gut feeling that a zip_lock bag wouldn't do it....are there any lockers near this ride or just in the front of the park? Thanks for any help

:sunny: We're going in July and looking forward to getting soaked. It will be so hot and getting soaked would be a good thing.

Getting wet is definitely part of the fun. But our first time on the ride my youngest DD (7 at the time) got so much water inside her tennis shoes that she got blisters from walking in them all day.

So now we bring a change of clothes and our walking shoes in a backpack and leave them in the lockers near the entrance. They are to the left right after you go through the turnstiles (next to the bathrooms). We put on our water shoes or waterproof sandals, and ride the ride as much as we want (always do during EMH so that we can ride several times before the line gets long). When done and soaking wet, we return to the lockers, change into dry clothes and enjoy the rest of the park.

If we are going to park hop, we make sure to get a voucher and receipt from the locker rental CM. This allows you to rent a locker at the next park with only the returnable $5.00 deposit. You don't have to repay the $7.00 fee!

It is one more thing to carry on the bus, but it works for us.

One other tip that helps is to sit on the light side of the raft! The heavy side is more likely to go down the waterfall first. Ponchos worked pretty well for me (and I got dumped on) but one leg of my shorts still got quite wet despite careful planning because the seat held the water. We were there in Nov. so getting wet wasn't high on our priority list.

And I agree that you shouldn't count on the middle pouch to keep your posessions dry. We put our camera into a ziplock and then inside our backpack. I'd personally trust a ziplock to keep my camera dry.

Thanks everyone! I think I can do this now. And it will be hot so fast-drying clothes and sandals should do the trick.

Ponchos with the hood up! I agree with another poster that you should hold it tight around your neck and position it under you so that you're not sitting in a puddle. Try to get ponchos that hang down pretty far - some of them are pretty short.

I would also do the cheap flip-flop thing (take off my regular shoes and wear flips on the ride) - you can get the really cheap ones for a buck in some places!

One thing, though - make sure you don't wear denim, just in case you do get wet! I wore denim shorts to Seaworld in San Diego one year, and got totally soaked on one of their water rides. I was still wringing water out of my shorts hours later. Very uncomfortable to even walk, since the wet denim rubbed against my legs. Never again!

Getting wet is what this ride is about. If you don't want to get wet stay off.

Now, ofcourse, this was in '99, but I remember that after getting into our boat, everyone (not just me) flung their shoes into the center thing, and I had no prob... Other than that thing was FULL :rolleyes1

A few thoughts:

I don't mind getting wet, but I don't want to be SOAKED! At both DLR and WDW, My wore a poncho with the hood up and got minimally wet. While on our last visit to DLR, I sat next to my brother in law who did not wear a poncho...he got SOAKED and I got just wet enough to cool off.

Last year at WDW, same thing with my husband. Except he was miserable walking through the hot and muggy AK. AK is humid just by nature so walking around in wet clothes is really uncomfortable. It took him HOURS to dry and we went in June!

As far as things not getting wet when put in the center console, I put my digi cam in a plastic bag that goes inside my backpack, which I put inside a plastic sack, which I put in the console. Works like a charm.

I always at least offer my $1 only-used-once poncho to someone awaiting.

I LOVE Kali River Rapids! We get dollar store or Wal-Mart rain ponchos and wear those. They won't keep you completely dry, but you won't be soaked. I agree with the other poster, don't wear denim. Wear a quick drying fabric. I don't think anyone has mentioned that the bathrooms near the exit of the ride have hand dryers. One time my DS4 got pretty wet because the neck hole on the adult size poncho was just too big. I dried his clothes with the hand drier and we were off the enjoy the rest of AK. I HTH.

I love this ride and ride it with the intention of getting wet... If you don't want to walk around wet afterwards ride it at the end of your AK visit... This is what I do...

Enjoy your ride :thumbsup2 and to dry a little quicker here is the :sunny:

:teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

If you really don't want to get ride and get wet then stand in line with DD then take the chicken exit. She gets to ride and you stay dry.

I agree. That's like going to a scary movie and closing your eyes through the whole thing...you basically just wasted 10 bucks. At Kali it's like you wasted your time. It's not a very thrilling ride, it's just fun because you get wet. Plus it feels nice. I got soaked on the ride and my jeans dried up in literally 20 minutes...I was ready to go on again.

The only thing guaranteed to keep you completely dry is a full rainsuit, with drawstring waist pants and a hooded anorak, plus waterproof shoes. The couple of times I tried to use a poncho I still got drenched; you can get a full washover going down that hill, and it is like sitting in a bathtub for about 15 seconds.

I chose to solve the problem by dressing specifically for the ride when I visit DAK. I bought a pr. of plain men's swim trunks and a quik-dry cycling jersey, and I wear them with a pr. of water sport sandals. I braid my hair, too. I also bring a regular big trashbag folded in my bag, and put the parks bag in it, along with wallets, cameras, etc.. We just knot the top of the bag and put it in the bin knowing no water will get into it.

BTW, for those who remember barefooting on Kali; it used to be allowed, but the rule has changed. You must wear shoes of some sort while on Kali.

You will get wet but since you are going in the July heat you will probably want to get wet and you will dry off in 1-3 hours depending on the type of clothing in the hot sun. :sunny:

We just got back and it was super hot. I got soaked on the ride. My shirt dried fast, but the shorts I had on did not. All the walking in wet shorts gave me quite a painful rash. Make sure you wear a poncho or have shorts on that dry quickly.
