Couldn't they also just get 2 connecting rooms at either of the values? Their rack rate per room is $84 so two would only be $168. Toss in a fridge, coffeemaker, and toaster swap and you've got the makings of the suites.
Of course, I think that probably depends on the age of the children too. Just seems to me like two rooms would be a better deal there than the suites and a ton more space than the mods.
Am I missing something in that?

You are missing a few things.
The Family Suites are located in the Calypso and Jazz buildings which are the nearest buildings to the main pool, food court and bus stop.
This means less walking to and from your room.
For comparison, the price of a Family Suite is $9-11 more then 2 Standard Rooms, or $13-15 less the 2 Preferred Rooms, depending on season.
(Preferred rooms means the room is in a building that is near the main pool, food court and bus stop.)
The Family Suites have a QUEEN size bed. None of the standard value rooms or the mods have a QUEEN size bed.
The Suites have 2 privacy curtains. One by each vanity area so you can use the areas for a makeshift dressing rooms.
Also the kitchette has lots storage area besides the under the counter fridge which has a freezer area (the fridges in the swap are the smaller dorm size with no freezer) and coffee pot , The kitchenette also has a microwave, coffee packs, tea bags, foam coffee cups, paper towels, paper plates, paper bowls, a can opener and corkscrew.
Have fun at Disney whever you choose to stay!
