Just starting and scared of failure...

Hi Cats- If there is 1 post you read, please read mine. I know how you feel. Listen. the most important thing you need to remember is that when you start something like this you must continue it forever. Sounds like the end of the world doesn't it?
Well it's not, its the best thing that ever happened to you!!!! You are in control of your destiny, you make what you want happen & if you cheat, you only cheat YOURSELF, remember that.
Your body is a machine and it needs fuel..the RIGHT fuel to perform properly, treat it right & it will amaze you.
Give it the nutrients, water & plenty of movement & you will see results.
This may take some time before you notice a change, but you will, you just need to be CONSISTANT.
My suggestions for you are: don't get on the bandwagon of fad diets, easy, quick fixes ect. I will tell you right now I am no fan of Atkins, South Beach etc.
Eat less fats, calories, carbs + exercise ( cardio+weights) The muscle you build will amaze you, the fat you burn will amaze you...heres the SECRET: Consistancy... stick it out, you won't crave any food but your energy food...I know, TIME is your friend, not your enemy!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, cats7494, I'm so sorry for all you've gone through!

I've always been an emotional eater, too, and of course the main problem is that it only makes you feel better for a very short time indeed, and then you feel physically worse and out of control. You've already done the most important thing, and that is to decide that the time is right for you to make a change.

Atkins is very easy to follow, and the first two weeks are enormously encouraging. I got my own start almost by accident -- I felt dissatisfied with myself, and I knew that I had to make a change, but I didn't know how to get started. I was planning a January trip to WDW, and while reading everything in sight on the DIS, I kept seeing people's clippies with astounding amounts of weight lost and 'Atkins' right beside. At the same time, in another message board that I read, there was a thread about Atkins and people were relating the most amazing stories of weight melting off. At that point, I had exactly 2 weeks to go until my trip, so I figured I would give it a whirl -- if I didn't like the results or the way I felt after those 2 weeks, I could just stop. Well, after two weeks, I had lost 9 pounds, and was over the moon with happiness! I can't even imagine going back to the way I used to eat now.

Once you clear your system of sugar and bad carbs, which takes about two days, you stop craving them. It takes a bit longer to clear out your mental habits, like reaching for a pint of ice cream or whatever when you're feeling low, but with time, those urges fade, too.

GOOD FOR YOU for making the choice for the turkey sandwich and water!!! That is EXACTLY how to make the change for yourself -- one choice at a time. Small steps in the right direction add up.

This is a wonderful group of helpful and supportive people who have made all the difference for me. I hope you'll check back in often and be a part of things!!

GOOD LUCK!! We're all pulling for you!!

Good luck to you Cats. I know any beginning is frightening. But you can do it! I started doing SBD for the first month, then switched to eating more fruits/veggies, some chicken for the next 7 weeks. Now I am basically still doing that but having some bread/pasta once or twice a week. I do everything in moderation. The key for me is exercise and water. I go to the gym for weights/cardio 6 to 7 days per week. If you don't want to do that then go 5 days/week. I find for me if I go any less than 5 days/week I stall. Keep visiting here and you will get the encouragement that everyone needs at the beginning of a journey. Why don't you start a journal? It is amazing what can happen when you have to really account to yourself what you have done day to day. Good luck again.:D

cats7494, you have been through so much and I'm sorry for all that you've lost. However, I've learned that everyday is a new day, a chance for new beginnings and a time for things to start over. We here are very supportive and loving. I know that you can do it and I will keep you in my prayers not only for you to successfully lose the weight but for your personal life as well.

I agree - you posted.

I'm so afraid of failing, again... I am not just going to stand on the sidelines, and do what others say... portion control and exercise. I'm now (for the last 2 weeks, since I booked a wdw vacation!) concentrating on HEALTH... esp the exercise component. I joined Curves in October, but with their schedule and mine I havent made it much - so I will drop it at the end of my contract, its not enough for me, and I'm not getting any friendly support there.

I just think its important not to hide, but to look for support, and make those baby changes like others have posted!
