I took 7700 pics. Any suggestions on how rationale on how to go thru them and what do you do when 3 are similar but different? How do u decide?

Wow that's a lot of shutter clicks! The most I have taken on a Disney trip was 700 so my process was much easier to start. I usually look through them in the order they were taken and process accordingly. If something is off or not right in a photo I just skip it and go to the next one. After I am all done I usually revisit the photos I didn't like the 1st time and see if there is something I missed or have the ability to save.

Can't wait to see some of your images!

Holy crap. Anyway. I took about 900 a few weeks ago. I went pic by pic to delete the obvious stuff eyes closed blurred cause of movement. Pics of other families I used to get light settings. After that I have 400. That's when I went pic by pic of the same types and check eye focus and face. That took out another 100. So now I got 300 to edit through. As I edit I delete the similar a like u are talki g about.

That's it. But seriously how did u take 7700 pics? Lol

My past few averages were in the 3k range, so while I'm only half there, it is a lot of work. I attempt to limit the amount of actual PP that I'll have to do by weeding out all the bads, all the repeats that aren't as good, etc.

My typical workflow goes something like: (Note: I use LR3 for all of this, so it may vary some)
  1. Import all photos into LR - Create 2 collections for the imports, one is a "Temp" collection used to do the bulk of the work, the other houses all the photos. This is so I have a backup of any that I accidentally delete from the collection.
  2. Make a pass through the entire group (in the Temp collection) and weed out any obvious bads
  3. Repeat the above a couple times
  4. Semi-organize the photos, putting similar "themes" together. For my work, my biggest thing are the on-ride pics here, which get placed all together, organized into roughly the proper order, and shifted down to the bottom of the collection so I can find them later.
  5. Start going through the groups of similar items, weeding out any that fall behind the others.
  6. Then I start doing the actual PP work.

(I also move all HDR sets into their own collection, so they don't clutter up my actual photos...and I don't mess up and delete them when I shouldn't :p)

Also to note, I don't really work in an order when processing. I'll start with a clump that I want to get done, and work through those. I'll use the LR color flagging stuff to mark progress (e.g. Red = Not Touched, Yellow = PP Pass 1, Orange = PP Pass 2, Green = Ready to Go, etc). I'll also go through and give a general rating (while doing the weeding passes above) which lets me focus on a general area to process through.

For the past 2 trips, I started with ~3.5k photos and ended up only having to actually process ~1000 and only have to do real work on about 500-600. (Some of them I'll pop some color balance, light cropping, etc, but won't really pay much attention, these are essentially the "Decent Family-Style Vacation Pics" rather than the ones I really want to share)

I also use Lightroom3 for PP. Using the "library" module, I would "flag" the ones I want to keep and edit, and "reject" the ones I want to delete. I connected my Playstation3 controller to my computer, using bluetooth, to make this culling process faster. You can customize the button layout to tag a photo any way you want, and make navigation easier. Once the photos are chosen I head into the "develop" module, then filter to the "flagged" photos and edit away.

You're going to need a bigger hard drive.

You're going to need a bigger hard drive.

Funny you say that my next project is to migrate my data from my old 2tb server to a new 4tb server. But its expensive.

4tb in raid

2x 4tb rotating backup drives.

Lots of time.

go through in passes.
1st pass, remove faulty & sub-par shots
2nd pass, remove near duplicates
3rd pass, Were there any pics that captured a moment you really don't care much about?

This should remove 60-90% of your pics. Set the rest aside, then go through them and rate them for more subjective qualities

Also to add, I've found it helpful to allow time to pass between passes (especially at the near dupe/subjective passes).

there sure is a lot to going thru all these pics and trying to get back to work mode.
