DD15 and I just came back from "Open Water". A very short movie. An hour and 25 minutes long. Very suspenseful and emotional. We liked it. I won't be going on any diving expeditions in my lifetime.;)

It is based on a true story.

I think we will see it this weekend.....very short though.

I read the budget was so small they had no stunt doubles, there were actual sharks swimming around them and they had chain mail suits on in case they got bitten!!

:earseek: One thing is for sure, the movie does appear to be low budget - I noticed that right off the bat. But I guess psychological terror can be accomplished without much money at all.

This was, indeed, a low budget film. I read a review recently that said the acting was horrible and would've been on the whole a much better movie with better actors, but because it involved real sharks, they had to go with less established actors. I don't know ....for $9 (the movie rate around here), I want to be entertained for more than an hour and 25 min.:)

This is a Indy movie and it is based on what they thought happen because the divers were never found .
We dive in Mexico all the time and you can bet I have never let the Dive Master out of my site.

The only thing that was recovered was a piece of Dive gear ( there was no evidence of any shark attack on the gear) and a Dive slate that they had written a note on asking for help it was dated the day after they were left behind .

Not seeing it cause I dont need to be thinking on that on my next Dive.

I don't think I'm going to see it at the movies. I need to wait until I can watch at home with a pillow to cover my face! I am a BIG scaredy cat. For some reason, maybe the low budget, this film's previews bring back (bad) memories of the Blair Witch Project. That movie scared the **** out of me!!!

Don't forget that Halloween was low budget too.

I'd love to see this but it looks too spooky to me. I'm afraid of being in the middle of the ocean. When we traveled by ship when I was a child, it almost frightened me and once we had some major trouble with an extremely bad storm.

I actually met the actress who plays the lead in this movie, Blanchard, prior to her filming it. She did some modeling for the magazine I work at. Very sweet girl. I'm torn - I want to see the movie because I met her, but on the other hand, sharks (and basically water where you can't see the bottom) scare the bejezus out of me! :o

ME TOO!!

I actually didn't even realize it because I've been swimming in pools since I was a teeny kid and we went to the beach alot when I was younger. Then, last year, we were planning a visit to Discovery Cove, and just the thought of open water (no relation to the movie - lol) made me really anxious.

As we planned, however, I thought I'd regret not swimming with the dolphins, so I paid for the full experience. When we finally DID get there, I did fine with the dolphins...not so much with the snorkeling.

First, I refused to go in because I'm terrified of fish touching me. (I hate them. HATE THEM. Some people don't like spiders, some people don't like snakes....fish are my doom. I don't even like tuna in a can.) My sister then reminded me how much I was paying and pretty much forced me to atleast try.

I did try. Then I started hyperventilating UNDER THE WATER when big ugly fish started coming at me. Didn't know that was possible, did ya? Well, it is. And I did. And there are photographs.

I had a full-blown undiagnosed anxiety attack that day, but I'm really proud to have done it. I doubt I'll be setting foot - or, rather NOT setting foot - in open water anytime soon.

Just as an ON-TOPIC reply, however:

My sister has been excited about this movie for weeks. She's fascinated by sharks and can't wait to see it.

I really want to see the movie, but I know it will haunt me when I go on my cruise in December. I've only been in the ocean once when I was 8, so I'm not really sure how I'm going to feel about it as an adult.

I heard an interview with the guy who made it on my local radio station.

This was his first "professional" film. It really wasn't intended to be in wide release. No/little staffing like make up people, etc. It is also based on several stories of people left in the water, not just one.

It was a good interview.

I am dying to see this movie! Entertainment Weekly gave it an "A" and they hate everything!

Well, this household won't be seeing it. DH and DD are divers, and I don't need to be any more anxious when they are on a dive. One good thing, DH is very careful to book their dives with shops with very good reputations, that only take small groups. No cattle boat dives for them.

I was wondering why they didn't write down actual names on a list, rather than just do a headcount. That seems very irresponsible. If you're dealing with people in the ocean, you should have a little more info than a number.

I remember this news story and I remember adding that situation to my top 10 worst scenarios.

There's another good adventure/true life movie-this was sort of a documentary with dramatization- from last year ...TOUCHING THE VOID. The things people can do and withstand!

This happened in Autralia on a dive at the Barrier Reaf. They now have to sign in on a clipboard before they go into the water , and they cant leave untill EVERYONE has signed when they get back up on the boat. It is a law there, it was in a Diver mag that we get at the house.

We have never done a dive with a bunch of people . It is not that expensive to get a boat for just your dive party. That way everyone knows who is where and when . Not like you are leaving without one of your family or firends ;)
