We returned last night after a grueling 14 hours of travel. I'm pretty tired but thought I would share some of my thoughts.

First, We stayed in the Disneyland Hotel..but first considered staying in the grand californian. We decided on the DH thinking it would be better for our two DS (18months and 4yoa). After visiting the park I would choose the grand californian if we we ever to return. Its closer to the parks and seemed to be a much nicer resort. We enjoyed the DH but I think it would have been well worth the extra bucks to stay at the GC.

The monorail service seemed slow and after the first day we started skipping it and just walked.

Sat and Sun (dec 7&8) the crowds were heavy but managable. Monday and tuesday light crowds during the day but busy at night. On the weekend and evenings it seemed like everyone was AP's but us. A LOT of locals.

WE learned that the same courtesy and rules that apply at WDW do not apply in DL. Its kinda hard to believe that DL is the original

Also do not expect cast members to help even the slightest bit with guest with small childern in strollers. I had one CM speak harshly to me about using a elevator at one of the monrail staions. I guess it was supposed to be handicaped use only. When I told him that if they had put a sign on the elevator we would not have used it. The CM responded that they could not put a handicap use only sign on it because that would be discriminating. I'm not really sure what he meant by that...When I asked another CM to open a gate for me so I could wheel the stroller through he told that he could not as it was Disney policy not to assist guests with strollers. Not the same policy in WDW where the CM's were very helpful.

Although the Blue Bayou comes highly recommeded I wish we would have skipped it. Had a PS for 445..did not get a table till 6p. The food was OK..atmosphere was nice..service was not very good.

If you have made any PS arrangements get a confirmation number and take it with you. According to a CM the resie system hasa been acting up and several resturaunts did not have our resie. Lucky I had our cpnfirmation #'s otherwise we would have been out of luck.

Even if you've seen Fantasmic in MGM don't miss the one at DL. I think its much better. The 1030 show was not crowded at all sunday night.

The haunted mansion and small world are decked out for X-mas and have long lines.

With our resort package we had unlimted fast pass. Whoever came up with that idea should be in the Disney hall of fame somewhere. We were able to really enjoy our day instead of standing around waiting in lines with two excited kids. Without it we would not have been able to do 1/2 of what we did.

I hope this was a bit of help to anyone visting in the near future. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Also..Saturday morning they did not open the gates untill 810 am. The other mornings we were allowed onto main street till the offical opening time. Not really sure what happened sat morn.

And...as a first time visitor to DL i was shocked to see how small the castle was. Just after our visits to WDW I kinda expected something similiar to cinderellas.

Glad you enjoyed your trip...:jester:

Wouldn't it be great if WDW had the unlimited fastpass policy for guests staying at their resorts!

Sorry about your experience at The Blue Bayou...We have only ate lunch there and enjoyed the meal and service...Their Monte Cristo is now one of my favorites.

:( Sorry to hear about your expierence at DL. I've only ever been to DL and loved it. I'm going to WDW for the first time in 13 years(last time I was there it was for a band trip and we only had 1/2 a day). I'll let you know if I WDW is better.

Hope you got to go on the Indiana Jones Ride. It's one of our favorites and we're bummed that it's not at WDW. We're hoping that TOT will more than make up for it.

I have been thinking about trying out DL but after some things I've read and how small it is I somehow think it might be better to stick with good old WDW. At least there you have a number of resorts to choose from and four parks instead of only two. Also it would ruin the Disney experience for me if the CM were anything less than they are at WDW. It is there job to make you feel "at home". Besides what kind of comment is "It's not Disney policy to asisst guest with strollers"!???? That's just common courtesy. No, I think we will just content ourselves with seeing the mouse in Sunny Florida.

Having been to both WDW (2002) & DL (12/03), I agree that WDW is Disney at it's best, while DL is missing some of the magic. DL is nice, but just doesn't compare. Just my opinion.;)

We also just returned home from our first trip to Disneyland. We also found the castle VERY small. We found it weird that you can't see it from other parts of the park. About the CM's we were on Indiana Jones, and alittle girl (about 10 yrs old) comes running back up the line, and yells "stop my Eeyore is on the ride" It happened to be the car we were sitting in,a nd everyone looked in their front pockets, and needless to say it wasn't there. I then overheard one CM go "it must not have been that important!" I was shocked to say the least!

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I've been to Disneyland every year since 1998 and have never found any reason to complain whatsoever.

I absolutely adore Disneyland. After several visits to WDW, Disneyland is number one in my heart. Countless trips to Disneyland have each been filled with magic. Anyone out there contemplating a visit to Disneyland shouldn't be put off by the 'fair to midlin' comments. Disneyland is the original - Walt's original vision. That HAS to count for something...more if you're a true Disney theme park fan.

At the risk of being flamed, I would describe the difference between the WDW and DL as WDW provides a resort, vacation get away type atmosphere while DL is more like a theme park atmosphere with a lot mor locals. We stay on property at both locations and we noticed that there is a difference even in the hotel staff attitude.

With all that said, since moving here to California from Ohio, DL is closer, so it provides a quick fix if needed, but WDW is still in my heart.

Mousecrazy: I would agree that DL was Walt's original, but if I recall correctly, Walt was disappointed with the development around DL and that is why he secreatly bought the land in Florida.

BTW: If you want a really pampered Disney trip, take the Disney Cruise!!!

We went to DL the weekend before thanksgiving after many years at WDW and also noticed the lack of help around DL. The cast members did not seem to enjoy their job as much as WDW. It seemed like more high school students who were there just because it was a job. We stayed at Paradise Pier and enjoyed the entrace to DCA. The room was larger than WDW and we really loved having a fridge in the room (And target just down the street!!)

Also, most every day (we were there 5 days/4nts) the monorail was having a "delayed opening" in the morning, so you had to walk to DL park. It wasn't the worst, but with 3 young kids it was a lot of walking!! Definately not impressed with the monorail -- it was shut down a few afternoons also!!! That wouldn't have happened at WDW.

We enjoyed our trip, but will probably stick with WDW for our Disney fix in the future.

I forgot to mention that we loved the multiple fast pass option. We usually got 5/6 at a time and then went back and did all the rides in the order we got the passes. My husband was worried one time about us being late for our fast pass time, but they said any time after the starting ticket time is OK.

This is the joy of California's out of control legal system. Here, if that gate had slipped and had hit your kid in the stroller, Disney would probably be held liable for an injury. I'm in retail management and we have to be careful with the garment hooks. Those are the ones to reach garments high up. Why? If a customer grabs one and somehow gets injured, we're liable. ugh!

I just got back from DL and found all the cast members at the parks and resorts exceptional. They were all very courteous and friendly. It did seem that there were fewer CMs than at some times in the past. During a recent trip to WDW, I did encounter a snooty CM at AKL, but otherwise, I didn't find a lot of difference between the treatment we received. I had no stroller to manage though.

Yes, the size of the castle shocks those whom have seen the one at WDW but there is a reason for it's small size: Walt didn't think it would be right to have a castle bigger than a mountain, in this case, the Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn came 4 years after the park opened. It (the castle) was probably thought of more as the "entrance" to Fantasyland as opposed to the centerpiece of the park. Plus, Walt had to do what he could with the limited funds he had at the time.

As a Californian who goes to DLR at least 3-4 times per year, I'm bummed to hear that folks have had bad experiences at DLR. Our family (who regularly goes there with a child in a stroller and a senior in a wheelchair) have had many a magical visit to DLR. We've been taking my grandma to DLR for the last two years (after taking her to WDW in 2000 and finding out she'd never visited DLR!) and she always enjoys the special attention paid to her by both family and CM's. On her 90th, the CM's were all very attentive and made sure to say something special to her wherever we went on property.

That's not to say that every moment of every visit has been perfect. There have been some less than magical moments due to stressed/unhappy CM's and guests. Those moments, thankfully, have been rare. DLR remains for our family the one space of refuge in an often unfriendly world. (We only wish we lived closer so we could work there when we retire - but we love the SF Bay Area too much!)

As for features of the parks - we have been to WDW and DLR and feel that there are special aspects to both. While the castle is larger in WDW (and every other Disney park), our Small World is much more grand - and nothing comes close to riding the Matterhorn at night during the Holidays and casting a glance toward the Holiday splendor of SW. We also have the original HM & POC - both of which seem to have a slightly more magical touch than those at WDW. I could say more - but most of you have heard it all before. If you're on the fence about going to DLR, you owe it to yourself to come out to Sunny California and see for yourself! :wave2:

P.S. Just curious how people can tell the difference between a local and an out of the area visitor? In such a diverse area of the US, it's hard even for me to determine who's who.

We've only just started doing WDW and Disney cruises (we live in Las Vegas, so DL is only 4 1/2 hours away). But I will agree that WDW is a much more spectacular vacation. They have 4 awesome parks rather than just two, and I love that the whole area is wooded and there is nothing there but Disney stuff. The area around DL is run down and kind of dumpy looking. However, that being said, if I were only comparing MK to Disneyland, I would choose Disneyland! Even if I didn't have so many childhood memories there (it was our family vacation every year of my pre adult life) I really love Matterhorn ,and Indiana Jones is my favorite ride anywhere. DL's Small World is better, Pirates and Space Mountain are better.

One thing negative I always notice at DL is how chaotic it is to get a picture/autograph with the characters. Many people (mostly visitors from Asia) don't understand what it means to wait their turn. The first time I went to WDW, I was so impressed with how much more orderly it was; the CMs have you form a line and wait your turn. Much better!

It (the castle) was probably thought of more as the "entrance" to Fantasyland as opposed to the centerpiece of the park.
That's the story I've heard most often. The castle was apparently never intended to be a "centerpiece".

Anyone who has doubts about DLR needs to visit for themselves and make up their own minds. One word of caution...don't try to compare it to WDW (resort vs. resort). You will be setting yourself up for a dissapointment.

I find DLR perfect for a shorter trip. Try riding everything at WDW in three or four days. You'll end up needing a vacation from your vacation :teeth:
