Just purchased 200+200 pts at SSR...was that a mistake?

While on the DCL decided to become a member of the DVC at the SSR and split the 400 pts into 200 + 200. We have put off buying for years and finally decided to do so. We paid $86.00 a point.

We love the BC and always stay there but never purchased the points for there when we had the chance. We have not even seen the SSR but the point value at a $15 savings seemed to be a good deal.

I have been reading alot on this and was wondering...how hard is it to stay at the BCV with the SSR being our home. The sales rep made it sound like it would be no problem! just that it would cost more points.

Were we wrong to buy so many points at once ??? the value seemed to be a good idea?

Only time and your opinion will tell. Buying into SSR was a good deal. How you go about getting into the BCV is you book your home resort, SSR, at the 11 month mark and then try to change the reservation at the 7 month mark. Depending on the time of year it can be done. The F&W fest will be trouble though. Both the BWV and BCV fill fast at the 11 month mark, this usually is early October to the first week in November. Also splitting your contracts was a great idea. If you ever have to unload a contract its a lot easier the smaller they are. Once you know the game it will all work out......and if you have extra points there are always members out there willing to rent them off you.

I think buying two separate contracts was a good idea rather than one 400. That is the one thing I would have done differently if I could do it over. Congratulations!

Cost-wise it is a good deal, and a much better decision to split them into two contracts of 200 each than to get one big one at 400 pts. Buying at SSR you are getting the "promo" price, plus the additional years over a BCV contract. What you sacrifice is the ability to book at BCV in the 11 month window. As others mentioned, if you travel in DVC-peak times (like F&WF time) then booking at BCV could be difficult at BCV, but not impossible. It just means you'll likely be calculating the exact date and time that you can call at 7 months to be booking your vacations rather than just easily booking at 9-10 months out...

Now whether it is a good deal for your family is another story... some folks could easily blow thru 400 points in a vacation. Staying in a 2BR for a week can take a nice chunk out of 400 pts. It's hard to say, but worst case scenario is that you bought too many points than what you need and you end up selling one of the 200 pt contracts. If you only needed 300, then you could do a 100 pt add-on after that.

I agree that only time and your opinion will tell. However, I can tell you that we recently booked a 5-night stay at BCV for May '07 at the six month mark with no problems at all.

However, I'm sure it will be very difficult to book December or F&W there inside seven months.

Honestly, I have had no issues booking at the 7 month mark at any resort including BCV. I personally believe unless you are trying to book at a really busy time and even then not at the 7 month mark you can get in to pretty much anywhere.

Saying that I love to try all of the resorts after June I will have stayed at every DVC except OKW (and hope to get there as well) and I think people miss out when they get stuck on one resort only.

I happen to love SSR, cannot wait for AKL but if on some trip I get *stuck* at BWV (my least favorite) then that is a trauma I can handle!!!

Also Depends on what time of the year you wish to book. Trying to get in during Christmas or Thanksgiving week may be a bit difficult but I've never had much of a problem getting a 7 month ressie any other time of the year.

If you use your points and you have many wonderful, magical vacations than I would say it was money well spent.

ITA - great job breaking up the contract into two smaller ones. We've had great success with 7 month reservations and are not bothered by the waitlist. As someone mentioned, make the reservations you want at 11 months and then call to switch resorts right at 7 months - if nothing is available, you can set up a waitlist to automatically cancel your old reservation when your desired location becomes available.

That said, how realistic is it to think that you'd want to stay in the BCV every trip for the resot of your life when there is such a wonderful variety of different experiences available by trying different resorts? Many DVC families (ours included) have numerous properties we love and like to visit. For us, home resort does not mean much at all - because we like staying everywhere. Each resort truly has something special about it that the others don't have.

We own at VWL and wanted to try BCV for our early June 07 trip. We had no problem getting BCV at the 7-month mark for early June. I think as long as you can plan ahead - you'll be fine.

I totally second this post!! You are going to have so much fun! We happen to love SSR as well, and you will have a great time trying to determine which resort is your family's favorite! What better way to spend your time! Congratulations!

We successfully used the wait list for BCV for F & W this year (no trouble getting into BWV at exactly 7 months). YMMV

Thanks everyone for being soooo helpfull
I can't wait to try them all. We love DCL and always add on to our trip with at least 5 days at WDW....with DVC we can stay longer and try all different resorts.

Am looking forward to paying off my points fast and buying more so we can use some for cruising and some for resorts. Gotta say though only issue with more points is the associaton fee....that will keep going up every year and that is a drag mostly when you have alot of points...

There for important to use them all and get your $$$$$ worth.

Please keep adding your inputs to this thread...the more I read the more you have all made me feel that we for sure did the right thing!!

I have been told that it is incase you decide to sell them it is easier to sell a smaller contract than one that is large....or if you decide that you are not using all your points you can sell one contract and keep the other.

However my reasoning was a little different..I did not know that at the time but have 2 ds and felt it a good idea to break them in to 2 contracts so to will them to each son evenlly in the years to come...plan to add on to both also but will buy smaller contracts evenlly since I have this info about easier to sell in smaller shares.

We own at SSR and BWV and have stayed at the Beach Club several times, including our Jan 1-9 trip coming right up. The wait list has been good to us.

Add us to the success stories.....we've booked VWL for Thanksgiving twice now, and we've also booked BCV at Spring Break/Easter twice. Follow the advice you've been given here, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

However if you want certain times of the year or a specific room type, you may have more problems. You are at risk for not being able to get in for Spring Break/Easter, summer holiday, Thanksgiving and most if not all of Dec. And if you want a 2 BR dedicated, you are unlikely to be successful much of the year. It's likely as DVC grows it will become more difficult and over a larger time frame. Still, if you call day by day at 7 months and wait list day by day, you will likely be successful most of the time. Make sure you always make a reservation at your home resort as early in the 11 month window as possible just in case.
