I can't believe the Stupidity by some people.
I house down the road from us have christmas lights up outside & Reindeer pulling a sleigh on the grass.
Very nice i thought as i walked passed until i looked down at the plugs, which are on 3 different extention leads that have been wrapped in Asda carrier bags & some tape wrapped round them in an attepted to make them water proof :scared1: :faint::faint:

I think there playing a very risky game doing this & with the snow coming as well.
They might be lucky & get away with it this year & all might be ok but i myself would'nt want to take that chance.

We were staying on a campsite that is supposed to have only 6 caravans on for a summer holiday years ago, we turned up and the field had been taken over by a rally - we were stuck up in the corner near the owners house with an extention lead out of his house and just laid on the grass. When another family turned up and set up their caravan almost in our awning they too plugged in! We ended up using the camper battery as it kept tripping!

Its like I tell my kids, just because you don't get hurt/fried to death this time it doesn't mean it won't happen.

Some people just don't think.

Since it is virtually impossible to waterproof extension cords at the plug ends (yes, water will seep through electrical tape no matter how well you wrap it) what would you recommend? Plastic carrier bags and electrical tape actually do a fairly decent job, not much better or worse than most other methods. Double up if you're expecting a lot of snow and ice (tape the cord caps first, carrier bag, tape, carrier bag, tape 6 inches or more in either direction away from the plugs).

For those of you who don't run your wires through pipes and into sealed junction boxes in order to light your Christmas decorations (that would be just about everyone) where the extension cord goes is more important than what you use to try and waterproof it. Either plug it directly into a Ground-fault circuit interrupter outlet or buy a GFCI outlet strip as a buffer between the house and your lights.
