Just off the Dream: Deck Chair HOGS

That's the most rediculous thing i've heard yet. So even if i'm in the pool practically next to my chair WITH my personal things on it, you think it's o.k. to move them for your needs, but mine don't matter? Trust me, that would be a problem. lol

We have a saying in Australia..... "Only bums keep seats! "

I believe that if you are sitting in your seat, and having fun for the entire day, so be it. However, if you leave to go on the Aquaduck, go for some food or even a swim... you have left that seat and someone else can now have use of it.

If you are standing in line for something and you leave your place, then it's gone and you have to line up again. Same applies to the deck chairs.
I think it shows an extreme lack of courtesy, to leave your seat with personal items on it and go for a swim, thus not allowing someone else use of that chair while you enjoy yourself and then expecting it to be there when you return.

Sorry, I just do not get this philosophy and the heated debate it always seems to cause. If you plan on spending the day at the pool or in the pool area, and you claim a chair or two for your family, then it is common sense that one or all of your party will be leaving the chairs throughout the day to go to the bathroom, swim, get food or get drinks. Even to run back to your stateroom to get something -- I do not see these as chair hogs because they are using those chairs ALL DAY.

Same goes for CC -- seriously, you don't expect people to swim or bike or walk along the beach? But the majority of the attitude expressed here seems to be if you do, you must take all your stuff with you and then find chairs later when you return? Obviously none of you have been to the Jersey shore :rotfl: You claim a large beach area for family and friends with chairs, blankets, food baskets and beach toys. Nobody comes along with their chairs and says you can't claim all that space!

I don't understand why it is a MUST that your bum be in that chair 24/7 while you are there. These are by the pool -- you don't expect people to go in the water? Then what should they do with their stuff, stick it in the corner? Haven't any of you claimed chairs at hotel/resort pools for the day? You are in and out of the pool, going to the snack bar and going back to your seats. Nobody is entitled to move your stuff off the chair(s) because you are still there in the area and making use of the facilities! :sad2: You really are entitled to have a place to put your stuff while you swim. Unfortunately, there are those who have ruined this concept and made everyone more self aware of what is now known as "chair hogs". But I think the term has lost its original meaning.

I think a distinction needs to be drawn between people who claim chairs at 6 a.m. and then don't even return to use them until the afternoon or late morning. They are most definitely chair hogs and that seems to be breaking what everyone has said is Disney's rule. But if you go up and claim chairs, go have breakfast and then spend the rest of the day there, then no, you are NOT chair hogs -- you are using the area as intended and getting what you paid for ;) One person even commented they have their lunch there too! :thumbsup2 OF COURSE people will have to leave their chairs throughout the day (if for nothing else than mother nature -- certainly don't want them in the pool doing that ), but they are making use of their chairs throughout the day and not taking more than they need! To me, that is NOT the definition of a chair hog! :rolleyes1

i guess i would be in the minority on this thread as well.

i will get up early and go for a run. since i know there are people already trying to save chairs i will go snag 2 myself, dh and I, not for child and then go finish my run. now i am only gone for about 30 mins but i completely expect my stuff to be on the chair still. the early bird gets the worm is what i believe. however i do agree that if you are going to depart from your chair for more then an hour you should give it up.

questions...haven't been on the dream yet, i would assume and hope there are more chairs available by the pools then magic or wonder???

I went to the gym almost every morning on our last cruise and there were already people putting towels and flip flops on chairs at 7am. I could have done this because I was an early bird, but I did not. We struggled to find seats almost every day we tried, but I still refused to leave my stuff there before we were ready to utilize the chairs, to me that just seems wrong and selfish.

Honestly, I'm not seeing a major difference in claiming at 6am and not coming till 11, versus claiming chairs before breakfast, going to have a leisurely breakfast, and returning afterwards. You're claiming a chair that you don't intend to use at that time.

I don't think I subscribe to the "if you're not sitting in it, it's fair game" philosophy either... If you are in the water, getting a snack from the pool deck eateries, or going to the bathroom, fine. *That* is what is intended. However, if you're leaving the pool deck to do a different activity (including breakfast), then you should not be claiming a chair.

Sorry, that was a generalization on my part. I was actually referring to the poster who said they went to a quick 30 minute breakfast (fast eaters) and were back. If you go and have a 2-hour leisurely breakfast, then I can see your point. Thirty minutes away from the chairs though I don't see as an infraction :confused3

Another reason I love Aussies! When will Disney sail there?? I'll be the first to book! :)

After this discussion, all I can say is thank God we don't use the pools on the ships and thank God we get a verandah.

Stop being so lazy people. Get up with me at 5:30. For some reason, I can't sleep past 5:30, even on vacation. This is what I saw every morning when I woke up. The funny thing is that I don't frequent the pool area to swim or sit on deck even though I could easily have any seat I wanted.

These people got the memo.

yep! you're butt's not in the chair and someone else's butt wants to be. It's nice that you use it to hold your stuff but even if you're in the pool, you're not using the chair so everyone else on board has the right to. I don't like the idea of moving someone's personal things though, I think I'd stick to just towels. Though courtesy for your fellow cruisers and treating them how you'd like to be treated would indicate that you would remove your personal belongings from the chair yourself (and put them in the non-existent cubbies!) :confused3 since you'll be in the pool and won't need a chair for that 15 minutes or so until you come out again. At that point, look for a new chair.

I was just going to say that I now have another reason to be glad that I NEVER use the pools.

I am up at 6am and after my run back in my chair reading before 7am when most people are still sleeping and hardly any chairs taken. I will continue to do this. :confused3

The logic some of you are using is ridiculous.:scared1: If it is that much of an issue for you then get up earlier and plant your bum in your seat for the rest of day. Do not dare leave your chair unattended for any reason...including using pool, grabbing food, towels, drinks, bathroom...etc because someone who is overly concerned with chair hogs will remove your stuff.

Everyone has their own intrepretation on who is a chair hog and not everyone can be pleased. Lighten up and enjoy your vacation!!!:woohoo:

It's pretty easy for an "early riser" to say "lighten up and enjoy your vacation"......maybe some people's idea of enjoying their vacation is to sleep in a little bit....maybe say, 9:00? Eat a leisurely breakfast (as opposed to grab and run to work) and THEN go to the pool....only to find every chair covered, and the only butts in a chair belong to the "early risers"?????

Everyone needs to get real. Disney has rules.....NO CHAIR SAVING.....
Plain and simple. None means none.
Common sense tells us that if you see a chair that someone has been using, and they disappear for a short time....then they probably only went to the bathroom......would you rather they went ON the chair or in the POOL, so as to not lose their chair????

If the chair has been empty for a half hour (a very reasonable time) then it's considered fair game.

Geesh. :confused3

I agree people should not claim a chair and then disappear for long periods....but on the flip side....if I choose to spend my day at the pool and leave it for a few minutes to take a dip, I do want to come back to my same chair. If I want to plant my butt in that chair it all day I should be able to. That is how I choose to spend my vacation time.

Still do not understand why DCL did not install cubbies for people who just want to put their things down and not actually use a chair.

We saw CM's constantly placing new white towels on the chairs that looked unoccupied.

MJ

Me too! I do only try to hold what I know will get used (like me, my mom and sister) as the kids never use them. We also take our stuff when we leave for long periods of time. :goodvibes

So because I am early riser I should wait till 9 to sit down in a chair so any person who deems waking up after 9 will be pleased.:confused3

Again everyone has a different intrepretation of who is a chair hog. Still ridiculous to even consider everyone is going to be happy with what others choose to do.

I would have absolutely no issues if i went on a run early in the morning only to find my belongings moved...but who am i kidding hardly anyone is even up in the morning before 7 and there are plenty of chairs. Once I finish my run I am in my chair for the rest of the morning enjoying the scenery.

So now it is 30 mins, i thought it was an hour in a different post. :confused3

I don't agree......30 minutes is not that long if you go to swim or even use the bathroom! What if you run back to the stateroom for more sunscreen or something for one of your kids -- that can take 30 minutes round trip (especially on a bigger ship).

I don't consider "saving" as being in use throughout the day by people who are AT the pool (whether in it, near it or walking to or from it). "Saving" to me is when you plant your stuff there and disappear -- not to be seen for hours within 10 feet of the vicinity!

I agree with the comments above -- I am so glad we don't use the pool. We get a verandah and thrive on it. This stuff sounds like it could lead to fist fights :sad2:

for all of you that think that leaving your stuff on a chair and walk away what if you tried to get a seat and they were all full with items, and no seats for you to claim you would be the first complain and call them all chair hogs. me me world!

If I am in the pool, getting a drink at the bar or in the bathroom and someone removes my belongings from my deck chair, there is a strong possibility there is going to be a scene posted on Youtube about the what happens next.....:thumbsup2

First come, first serve. If you and your family got your chairs that morning and plan on staying all day, and people come later, what are you supposed to do....leave or move? Odd. Some people's vacation exist around the pool and I don't understand why it is NOT all right for them to get their seats and use them all day. "Using them" does not mean their bum has to be in them 24/7 either!

The discourtesy would come when people leave their stuff there to go back to their rooms for a nap or extended time doing something else for hours. THEN they are chair hogs because they are not IN the pool area or coming right BACK to the pool area within a reasonable time.

I would hope you could leave your stuff there to hop on the aqua slide too, knowing you are coming right back to the pool for more time!

I cannot believe how intense this topic is. I ask again -- none of you complaining have ever put your stuff on chairs at hotel pools while you swim? Are you supposed to leave it on the concrete or in the grass if you are not physically occupying the chair? :confused3:rolleyes:
