I am the mother of five and the grandmother of seven (soon to be eight.) All of my grandchildren except one live in another state..I babysit for the one grandchild who lives near me. I consider myself lucky to be able to do that on a regular basis since I only see my other grandkids once a month or so. No, I don't get paid for doing it..I love having her with me and consider it a gift to be able to spend time with her.
That being said..common sense is common sense; I would certainly never give any child ice cream, cupcakes, and candy at the same time and surely not that close to dinner time. I abide by what my son and daughter-in-law want for THEIR daughter. I may offer suggestions but I would never defy them and go against their wishes.
I agree with the OP that snacks of the nature mentioned shouldn't be offered as "pre-dinner" fare. If grandma wants to give them treats and they live right next door, let her give them ice-cream AFTER dinner. I also agree that there could be a compromise with one day each week being special snack day.
