Just my observation....

How is Celebrity? They got a lot of high marks on Cruise Critic's Cruisers' Choice awards (along with Disney) so was really curious to hear from someone that cruised with then.

Absolutely fantastic. We've sailed with them 3 times so far.

First time was in 2007 maybe. We did the Galapagos cruise tour with them, including a stay in Quito, Ecuador, and a 7 night sailing on the Celebrity Expedition. This whole experience
was absolutely phenomenal, definitely a once in a lifetime trip, and extremely different from a normal cruise. The boat fits 100 pax, everything is included- tours, food, alcohol, transportation. The food was great, service was fantastic, and the only problems we had on the trip were physically getting to Quito- thanks American Airlines! But we made it eventually, although missed actually seeing Quito.

The second time was to Alaska on the Infinity back in 2008 or 2009. This was by coincidence- at the time Disney hadn't begun sailing to Alaska, and they were the only option for our dates that sailed out of Seattle- which was important to us as we needed to see some family there too. We booked a concierge class room- and while it was nice- we didn't need it or use it. We had actually found their food options too rich, too much meat, and just too fancy. Sailing in Alaska we would have been happy with a simple crab legs option or something, but instead got lobster stuffed with crab and bacon and a rich sauce etc. That was a common theme. We did a galley tour that trip(on the last sea day) and realized that they could be as accommodating as Disney, they just didn't advertise it. This changed our overall perception of the trip drastically, as we knew for the future this is something we could fix. The overall quality of the ship was fantastic, they took a lot of time and care in Alaska and viewing Glacier Bay. Overall the cruise activities were average, nothing too special on this trip- definitely not Disney. On sea days we spent time in the Solarium(adult only area) where they had a covered pool!! The excursions offered were top notch- seem to be the same as what disney offers. We had signed up to do the Dog Sledding excursion which got canceled due to an avalanche on the mountain, and after consulting us they put us on a private seaplane tour over the glaciers which was so phenomenal. No recollection of what ports we stopped at, but I know we went up close to Hubbard Glacier and also stopped at Victoria, BC.

Most recently in March 2015 we decided to do a last minute spring cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette. It was a Western Caribbean itinerary, perfect price and perfect trip. We departed from Ft. Lauderdale- which was odd for us, and we arrived pretty late driving from Orlando(home.) The port was set up weird and it was very confusing. Once we got on the ship though, all problems went away. Their food had improved, service was fantastic, the cruise was everything we expected. The ship was new, huge, and in excellent condition. I'd say comparable to Fantasy size. There were additional dining options, nice drink packages, lovely facilities, and so many healthy food options. There were no children in our party so no idea how the ship appeals to families, but for Adults it is Brilliant. Definitely a lower cost alternative to Disney, and they do even sail some neat itineraries around the globe!

This cruise stopped at Cozumel(our favorite), Grand Cayman, Falmouth Jamaica, and Labadee- RCL's private corner of Haiti. The worst part of the trip was labadee- we shouldn't have gotten off the bat. Could not find a working bathroom anywhere and they were all flooded. Left and went back to the ship- it was very gross. It was our first time at Grand Cayman, Falmouth, and Labadee and absolutely loved the other ports. We paid 550pp for an inside guarantee room- and received an OBC of 100$ since we booked through AAA. The value of this trip was fantastic, and I hope to sail Celebrity again in the near future.

If you have any other specific questions feel free to ask!

I was on the Fantasy a few years ago and we pulled up next to a Carnival ship in Nassau. Wow, the difference was astonishing. I was certainly glad I was on the Fantasy!
A few years ago the Fantasy was a brand new ship, common sense says it should look a lot better. My guess is if you saw a brand new ship by any other cruise line next to an older ship, even DCL, it's going to look pretty good.

On one of my Caribbean cruises, I noticed when we got off the Disney Fantasty that folks from other cruise lines were taking pictures of the Fantasy. I felt kinda bad for them...they were looking at the AquaDuck in awe!

I was really surprised at how bad Carnival's exterior looked when sitting next to it in PC and Bahamas... just awful... definitely not like DCL!

My partner oversees Naval ship maintenance at one of the busiest Naval ports in the world and even he was impressed with the condition of the Wonder last year. And he was specifically looking, even down to the chop of the propellers. It was rather funny to see him looking at such fine details that made no difference to me. I mean paint is really just a cover up...he was looking at anchors and seams and bolts and such...The only "issue" he saw was when they were grinding off some paint and rust, they were not using a vacuum to keep the particles from going overboard. But it may have been due to foreign waters and it not being required. He also noticed that the manufacturer of the life boat davits was one that they have stopped using at work because of too many shoddy construction issues, so he joked about hoping that if we were to abandon ship, let's pray ours works. Haha. Overall, he was impressed.

I am sure there are many excellent cruise ships out there, but every time I think about trying something non-DCL, I picture pulling into Nassau next to those other ships and how I'd feel seeing the Disney ship and not being on it. For me, personally, it just isn't worth it to try something else. I'm sure there are advantages and certainly cost savings, but ultimately, it is my vacation and I want to have no regrets.

hoping that if we were to abandon ship

When we were on the Dream a couple of weeks ago, they took the lifeboats off in Nassau and Castaway and were driving them around to test them. They certainly are in way better shape then the ones we saw on the ships beside us lol

I have done three Disney cruises and at any given time and in any give location there's always someone doing some kind of maintenance. They also somehow manage to do it without being obvious or getting in the way. To be fair I sailed on the Norwegian Gem and found them to be just as meticulous. I still prefer DCL though.

They also get closer to DCL when we shoot the fireworks off as well. Lol.

Likely training and keeping up with certifications as well. Which is an added bonus.

Every Carnival ship I've seen in any port looks like it was slapped together by a beginning welder's class and maintained by the D-average graduates of the Tennessee School for the Incredibly Inefficient and Unobservant. They're usually visibly rusty, their hull panels look like the ship is quilted and the whole boat looks like it would have that old, unrenovated motel smell. Like disinfectant, stale cigarettes, cheap laundry detergent and moldy air conditioner.

I really like Celebrity. They are probably my favorite mass market line (Disney included). I'm trying Princess next week so we'll see if they reign supreme lol.

I will say that I don't travel with kids so I have no idea how their kids' programming ranks. Celebrity does have a more adult feel to them and the crowd skews a bit older if that's something you care about.

I don't cruise to make new friends so I don't usually care if I'm on the younger end of the spectrum.

We were on the Dream this week nestled between Carnival and the Magic.... all those Carnival cruisers were just standing at the rails wishing they booked DCL. We said the same thing about the condition of the exterior and wondered what the interior was like... could not imagine it was much better.

I'll never take Princess again, after being kept up nights creeped out by the sounds of rats scuttering past in the walls. Anyone else have a similar situation?

True. It's not unusual to see a couple of other cruise ships lingering back to watch the fireworks before heading their respective directions.

I certainly hope you reported this to the ship's pest control officer either directly or through guest services and that they followed up with you.

While I'm sure all cruise ships have had an unwanted vermin or two (rats and ships have a long history). All cruise ships have fairly extensive pest control operations and procedures they have to follow.

I certainly think that your experience is not the norm. I can also guarantee that Disney ships are no more immune to pests than any other line.

While everybody has their favorites and opinions, I can't help but laugh as sometimes these boards make it seem as though every other cruise ship out there is a floating tetanus infection just minutes away from simply disintegrating into the ocean with every passenger wishing they were on the Disney ship.

laugh as sometimes these boards

Well it is the DIS(ney)Boards ;-)

I don't cruise to make new friends

We don't either but surprisingly on our last cruise on the Dream a couple of weeks ago we got seated with the best 2 couples as table mates. We're actually looking to cruise with them again hopefully. It came at a time when we needed some friends so it was a great surprise and really made our cruise even better.

Thanks for your thoughts on Celebrity. I'm definitely going to look into some of theirs since they got high marks!
