Just mailed docs today--Excited! I think?!

After going back and forth, back and forth, doing the research, reading these threads, talking to other timeshare reps, we decided that DVC was right for us. We got set up on the last night of our DCL cruise and mailed the docs in today.
I know it's not official yet, but we're so excited. We love going to Disney, have young kids, and would rather stay there than anywhere else. The only downside is we can't book anything all summer! We have points in our account but can't use them until BLT opens in August. That means we have to pay for hotel stays this summer...oh well, we'll be making our first official DVC trip in September to AKL before our cruise.

Maybe one day we'll even be able to stay in our home resort!

Are you 100% sure that you can't use them for other things, before BLT opens? Hubby owns at BLT, and we haven't gotten that impression from our guide at all, though we haven't asked it specifically, since any WDW trip was planned for October or beyond.

I could be wrong, of course.

The points don't become active until your resort opens. That's why they offered many people developer points as an incentive at SSR when people bought AKV. They couldn't use the AKV points till May 1.

Even though the points aren't active until the resort opens, you could see if someone is willing to trade points with you. That way you could use their AKL or SSR points forsummer vacations and you give up your BLT points for once the resort is open. Just a thought.

Trading may be a possibility...i'm not too familiar with how that works, but i do know that we are only allowed one transfer of points per year. (either in or out of our account...not both)
A person can also rent points until their resort opens.
Can anyone shed more light on this?...other possibilities?

Yes we definitely aren't allowed to use 'our' blt points until August...we may look at renting points for something this summer. The salesman on the Wonder gave us the impression we could use them right away, in fact, he said 'you can use them right away.' What he didn't tell us was that we could use them to book something, but we couldn't actually stay anywhere until August. boohoo i know, but when you live an hour away we were hoping to book something right away just to try it out.
