I decided that it sounded like a good idea when I went yesterday but I looked on another site and it was pretty negative and my mom thinks it was a bad idea. She used to be a trust officer with a bank. I purchased 100 pts at the Bay Lake Towers. I'm starting to think I shouldn't have done this - is there a way out? I love Disney, I love going to Disney to vacation I don't really want to get in a battle with them. If I lost my deposit, I guess I lost it but I'm just not sure this was a good idea. Do any of you have advice for me?

It is my understanding that FL law allows the buyer 10 days to cancel the contract with no penalty. It should state this somewhere in your paperwork. I belive the notification needs to be in writing. I would call DVC today and confirm. Good Luck!

If your not sure, cancel now, you can always buy in later. That way DVC would be far more likely to be a blessing than a potential curse to you.

They did say 10 days. I'm sad to let it go though too because it's scary but exciting. I just hope it's not a big battle I love Disney :(

By Florida law you have 10 days to cancel the contract. You will be refunded your deposit. You might get a call from your guide but that should be about the extent of it.

In July we purchased 100 points at BLT. After leaving my wife questioned weather we should have done it but after a few days she was fine and we are both happy.

My only suggestion would be to look into resale at some other resorts if you feel that you want to be a DVC member but are not in love with BLT being you home resort. You can save a ton of cash.

Its a big purchase and a lot of money... but its your money and only you can decide if you want to spend it or not. Whether you will be happy or not comes in time.

We just bought last year and we too, love Disney and all things Disney! We have 3 sons, 9,3,1 and asked our selves if we would be happy with 10-30 trips to Disney over the next 10-15 years and we were, so we bought!

Good Luck in whatever you decide

If you love disney and can afford dvc, why is it a terrible idea?

After spending a lot of money on a new purchase, I was unsure that I did the right thing when I bought into DVC during the summer of 2007. I decided to keep my purchase because I knew that I could sell it if I ever had regrets. Here I am 3 years later and very, very happy with my purchase. I visit Disney several times a year and have already broke even with my purchase. I now have another 44 years of free accommodations and "magic" ahead of me. Best of luck with your decision. :goodvibes

Unless you plan to start going to WDW more often, DVC probably isn't for you. You have only been there twice since 2006 based on your signature. On the other hand, if you are 40 years old, you shouldn't need your parents' approval on how you spend your money. If you decide to buy DVC, it really isn't any of your parents' business.

Hah, these are both fair points. But IMO 100pts at BLT is a good number for a great trip every 2 years, while keeping the dues fairly low.

I don't need her approval I just trust her judgment. I do want to go more often than I have been going. I also love the idea of my kids being able to take their kids. I didn't have the 12K outright, but I can afford the monthly amount. I can but my doubt is should I spend the amount every month because I WANT to go to Disney more often.

My feeling is if your gut right now is telling you that maybe you should wait, then I suggest waiting.

Give yourself time to look into it more, ask questions, get other members' feedback to those questions and then think about what is right for you.

Disney will not give you a hard time about cancelling and be honest with them. It was a impluse buy and you want to give yourself time to be sure it is the right decision for you.

Once you cancel and research, you may find that you still want it and can go forward with purchasing again. Or, you will find that it was the right decision for the time being.

Good luck!!

It kind-of sounds like this was a bit of an impulse purchase? But maybe not and you've been doing your research? 12K is a large chunk of money to not be 110% comfortable with your decision. Obviously, only your personal situation and thoughts can determine whether to continue on with the purchase. However, my suggestion might be to do some heavy research over the next couple of days to make sure you know how everything works with being a member and it sounds like a right fit for you. If after the couple of days it still doesn't feel like a 110% correct decision then use the 10 day rule to back out. And don't feel bad if you decide to back out, you won't be the 1st or last that has done so and the possibility of DVC will always be there in the future!

Good luck!

Sandisw, looks like we were thinking the same thing at the same time!!!

If you are feeling any hesitation at this point, you need to cancel. Give yourself time to think about it. Then, later on, if you still think it's a good idea, go for it. But cancel for now.

I would have told lots of people to go for it many years ago. But with the changes I have seen in the last few years, plus the great increase in the price per point, I don't recommend it any more.

How is "dated" almost as bad as the r word? Nothing is as bad as the r word. Hitler used the r word regularly. It's true.

It's extremely easy to cancel- you just have to send a fax. I know because we originally bought AKV but immediately regretted it...not DVC, just AKV. We realized we wanted DVC but not that home resort. this was late June 2008. When BLT was finally announced, be immediately called and placed an order with our guide to go in the day sales for new members began (and we ended up buying more points, too). That was the perfect decision for us, and because I stayed at AKV in March of this year, I now have confirmation we really made the right decision about our home resort.

I agree with the others, if you feel any hesitation, cancel. It will be there later.

If you signed your paperwork, in there is your 10-day cancellation page. On it, there should be the fax # and address where you send in order to execute your cancellation. It's really easy if it's anything like executing a California 3-day contract cancellation.

On the other points, I rest in the knowledge that when this site or others run a "How Happy Are You With Your Decision To Buy DVC" poll, the answers are nearly unanimous praise and wishes that they had bought in earlier. That being said, one thing you'll see a LOT on this board is that for many people, the initial purchase was not financed. DVC financing is pretty expensive. Thus, it sounds like your mom's hesitation wasn't about the quality of DVC, but in seeing you take on a monthly debt burden for a "luxury" purchase. I'm sure she'd hate to see you in a tight financial spot or stressed over $ when she knows that a chunk of that was for DVC.... not that it's any different than buying a nice car, upgrading your home, etc.

Yes that was her concern, in fact she said if I really want to keep it, she wants to pay it and have me pay her back instead of paying all of that interest. She said she could use that kind of interest on her investments more than Disney lol. She was certain I'd lose my deposit and that they must have insisted that I buy immediately, but they didn't. I think she believes it's like any timeshare time thing but being that it's Disney it's different in my opinion. Still, I think I want to ponder this longer and will cancel for now.

i think your mother is correct. but it doesn't mean dvc isn't right
for you. to calm your jitters, i would like to point out that many
here "mix & match" certain references that leads to confusion.

as for your mother's observation, a dvc isn't a good money investment.
so if your primary purpose was to make money, then she's right.[and
i don't think dvc would be good for any investor.]

we are new members & have yet to used it yet. however, we
are sure of the reasons we purchased. a product for staying @
wdw. we expected it to cost us monies over the years. but
comparing it to what we have been spending the last 10 years,
dvc is an excellent baragain.

good luck for a positive outcome, either way.
