Ill be posting this set of trip reports on three messageboard style websites based on both sides of the big pond so Id like to apologise in advance for typing anything that may seem obvious to you but it wont be so obvious to everyone.
Before I go further, Id just like to say hi to my American friends who will be reading these trip reports (apparently!). They played an integral part to the first seven days to the trip and we had a great time, most of them stayed at the same hotel as us before I moved on with my family to Disneys Port Orleans French Quarter. Not including their children, these friends are:- Edie, Greg (Edies husband), Donna, Roy (Donnas husband), Nita, Tazz, Stacey (Tazzs wife), Nolan and Mike.
Planning for this trip started towards the end of 2006 and our first choice of destination wasnt Florida. Well, it wasnt first choice for anyone in the family except me! Id had a difficult early start to the year with gall bladder problems then an operation to remove it in April and I then managed to persuade DH that Florida would be a really nice treat for next year. We then discovered that American friends (Edie and her family) would be there in the summer celebrating Gregs fiftieth birthday and talks began about whether we could coincide our trips. It became clear that several other people and their families would love to meet up too as they either lived not too far away from Orlando or were planning to visit the area soon anyway.
By the beginning of February I had booked flights and our Disney hotel but the American group and I took quite a while deciding on a hotel for the first week. We finally settled on the Quality Inn & Suites hotel on South Orange Blossom trail, not far from Florida Mall and the junction with Sand Lake Road. Tazz and his family live only about an hours drive away; he agreed to visit the hotel and he gave it the thumbs up.
On 31st March, Trevor and I visited an English friend in Pennsylvania for a few days and then flew up to Minnesota to visit Edie and her family for another few days. We arranged to rent a car from Dollar through airlinenetwork.com for the few days in Pennsylvania and I made arrangements to book car hire at the same time for our trip to Orlando. That Easter trip was a story and a half in itself just on the subject of travel! It seemed we lived out of airports for those ten days and it was interesting to experience Americas internal flight system. We had to change at Detroit airport before getting to Pennsylvania, then there was the flight from Pennsylvania to Minnesota and the flight home to Gatwick five days later so we really felt like we spent much of our time travelling or hanging around waiting for flights.
On a final note, I have all my trip photographs uploaded onto a webpage so they are ready for use with my trip reports. Its taken a while to get to this stage as Ive been very busy getting the kids ready for school but now they are settled and things are sort of back to normal, my trip reports should start to roll off the presses at a sensible rate. Read and enjoy.
