Just how casual is Mexicali/Tropical night?

I've seen posts of DISer's buying Hawaiian shirts, etc but how casual is it? I have always thought of being in "Keys" mode which is what you wear to a Jimmy Buffett concert. The aforementioned Hawaiian shirt, shorts and nice sandals or sneakers for the men. Is this appropriate? I know the restaurant guideline defines resort casual as no shorts but is that waived due to the Tropical theme?

My DW asked me today in anticipation of our 8/16 cruise and I thought I knew the answer but just wanted to check with the "experts" before I get myself in trouble :)

Tropical/Mexicali night is the exception to the no-shorts rule. The Navigator suggests dress for dinner that night as TROPICAL. We always wear shorts and wild shirts on that night. I love seeing the dining rooms filled with color. Many ladies wear bright, flowered sundresses, but shorts are fine.

Tropical/Mexicali night is fun! Shorts are the rule more than the exception. Everyone is decked out in festive colors and the servers do a great job of making it even better. On the Western you even have a Mariachi (sp?) band come through during dinner.

Pack your tropical best!

So, both the Magic and the Wonder have Tropical Night? On the 7 night eastern which night is it?

The Wonder does not have Mexicali/Tropical night. It is only on the Magic for the 7 day cruises. For Tropical night I believe it is the night you are in St. Martin. For Mexicali on the Western it is the night you are in Cozumel.

yup night before my birthday we'll be dancing away at mexicali night. I packed my marachias (honestly, lol) last yr for the Eastern - they'll definately be coming with us this yr on the Western

I have even worn a t-shirt on Mexicali night. The main gear is the really loud tropical shirts, and hubby and I had decided to buy some in Cozumel. But right after he bought his, there was a monsoon that put a damper on our shopping so I bought an extremely bright, loud, pink tie-dyed t-shirt that was definitely in the spirit of things too.
We have a group of people who I work with that we go out to dinner with every month or two, and we all wear the crazy shirts no matter where we go. It's like a little bit of Mexicali here in Chicago.

I hate to be the one to spoil the fun, but shorts ARE NOT recommended for the Tropical/Mexical dinners!

I know that many have posted information to the contrary, but they are incorrect.

How do I know? On our cruise in May we had the same question. We had considered wearing jeans to dinner but wanted to make sure this was ok. We called Guest Services from our stateroom and asked if jeans were OK for the Tropical dinner. The answer? Jeans and/or shorts are NOT recommended.

Call Disney Cruise Line and ask. You'll get the same response.

Also, you can check out the Personal Navigators on http://www.castawayclub.com/ . Check the Mexical night and at the very top of the first page you'll see "Suggested Evening Attire: Mexican, Tropical, Casual (NO SHORTS OR JEANS PLEASE)"

TC - we were on the May 10th cruise and I just checked out Navigator from the 14th (the day we were in Cozumel). It states suggested dress - Mexican Attire. Only after the Palo listing does it say suggested dress: Jacket Recommended- no shorts or jean please.

Our servers even encouraged us the night before saying it was Mexicali night the next night . We asked if shorts were ok and they said yes, everyone where's them that night. I would say that at least 60% of the room was in shorts. Some men wore dockers with wild shirts, and lots of women were in sun dresses. It was a wonderful casual night.

Goes back to what we often find with Disney - you ask 10 different castmembers and your often get 10 different answers.

I believe this is what TC is referring to. It does state on the top of this Navigator (no shorts or jeans please).

I'm just passing this along. Please, shoot the message, not the messenger.

We have been cruising the Magic for the last 3 years and each year we've been told by the servers that shorts would be ok to wear on the Tropi/Mexi nights. Most of the Men we've seen wore nice shorts and shirt with a Tropical/Mexican theme and the women wore nice sundresses with the same theme.

You're on our cruise. I'm planning on my tropical shirt and white pants. This is what I wore 2 years ago (although we didn't get to enjoy it because DS got migraine.)

I bought new white pants to wear with my new tropical shirt for our 11/30 cruise. Never got to wear either. Lost weight and the pants are now falling off my butt! The shirt can be worn loose.
A friend lent me her white shorts - thats what Im wearing.
Im not buying an entirely new wardrobe when I never got to wear what I bought for last Nov.

Andy - no shooting at all. And I didn't mean to imply that TC was wrong either. We didn't have that on our Navigator (at least that I saw). On the other nights that message was listed on the back under Dinner. When I go home I'll check the front to see if it is listed or not. I can tell you tho that no one seemed to pay attention to it as we had lots of shorts around us.

Too bad. It was nice to be able to have one evening where shorts were ok! Oh well next time we'll follow the rules and change to shorts after. Or since we aren't sailing again until Dec. 2004 they could change the rules again!

Last year, DH and DS wore nice shorts (khakis) and tropical button (short-sleeved) shirts while DD and I wore matching dresses. They felt perfectly fine in shorts for that one night and no one raised an eyebrow.

We're planning on doing the same this year as well. There is so much color in the room with all of the shirts and dresses that I don't think anyone even notices what's below the belt (lol)

It's really odd how different the experiences are of each individual. Try as I might, I cannot recall anyone wearing jeans or shorts on Tropical?Mexical night on my past two, 7-day cruises.

Of course, there were instances of individuals being WAY underdressed and not even considering those around them...

Well as promised I checked our Navigator from Mexciali night and no where on it is the no shorts or jeans mention. I would think they would pretty much keep masters in a computer and just change the date or something so it would be on each one. We sailed the week after Three Circles. Very strange.

BTW - we've had some very underdressed people on a number of nights - shorts and t-shirts. Even had someone sitting near us in Palo (on Formal night) in an open collar shirt with no jacket (kind of a dark hawaiin print). Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Mary,

The Navigator that we were going by was taken from Barb's site and the date was July 2003, not May 2003. See the date on the Navigator on the earlier post. Seems like DCL might have recently started adding this to the Navigator???

Andym

I saw that the one on Barb's site was from July, but Three Circles said they saw it on their Navigator and they cruised the week before us. That's why it is strange. Why have it listed one week and not the next. Guess we'll never know.

We had fun on Mexicali night tha's all I know! :)
