Just how casual is Mexicali/Tropical night?

How do I know? On our cruise in May we had the same question. We had considered wearing jeans to dinner but wanted to make sure this was ok. We called Guest Services from our stateroom and asked if jeans were OK for the Tropical dinner. The answer? Jeans and/or shorts are NOT recommended.
Three Circles said they saw it on their Navigator and they cruised the week before us.

Hi Mary,

Three Circles said they considered wearing jeans and called Guest Services from their stateroom, that's when they were told jeans and shorts were not recommended attire.

We had fun on Mexicali night tha's all I know! :)

No, the statement wasn't on our Personal Navigators in May. I pulled them out to double-check after seeing Barb's but there is no mention of the policy. That's why we called Guest Services to ask about shorts/jeans. I said that I had seen the policy on those posted at http://www.castawayclub.com/ .

I have a feeling that Disney never intended for shorts/jeans to be worn on Mexical/Tropical nights to dinner. They are very adamant about dress code in the restaurants, as they should be, and probably meant khaki pants and tropical shirts by "Tropical Attire."

I bet that as more and more people began to wear shorts/jeans for Mexical/Tropical night, they wanted to clarify their policy and thus placed it front page!

My apologies - I thought TC saw it as well. Guess that is why Disney started putting it in writing during July. Oh well it was fun while it lasted.

I'm not one for bending rules and always try to dress appropriately (I've been cruising for over 25 years). It was fun to have one night to just be super casual. Like having a jeans day at work (for our full time business casual office). Like I said even our servers encouraged us.

Guess we'll just have to pack long tropical attire when we go on the Dec. 2004 cruise :)

I didn't think this topic would lead to such discussion with as much uncertainty as it has.

Can anyone who has recently departed the Magic contribute to this question?

On Mexicali...... night, wear what you want to! I wore pants and then went to the deck party and died of heat! I think shorts are better for this night only. DCL employees never make you feel bad. This is a party night, enjoy it!!!

I just got back from the Sept. 13-20 Western sailing. On our Navigator for Wednesday, Sept 17. Coxumel day it states on the front of the Navigator, under the date: Suggested Evening Attire: Mexican, Tropical, Casual (No shorts or jean please). I did see some in shorts, but not alot. I saw more men in colorful shirts and slacks.
(:D Just the input of someone that just returned)

On the July 19 Magic cruise I intended to wear shorts on Mexicali night, until I saw the instructions on the Navigator. I watched carefully at dinner that night, and I can tell you that I did not see even one male passenger who wore shorts to dinner. Lots of people wore shorts to the show and to the deck party, but none that I saw wore shorts to dinner.

We have a group of people who I work with that we go out to dinner with every month or two, and we all wear the crazy shirts no matter where we go. It's like a little bit of Mexicali here in Chicago.

Does your colorful group ever visit the "Pump Room"?

Our cruises have been in March, and early May. On both dinner occassions I've seen men in shorts - even DCL execs.

And the saga continues, Do I or Don't I wear shorts on Tropical, Mexicali night? I did, (very nice dress shorts)and felt very at ease about it. There was no mention in our Navigator about not wearing shorts on Tropical night. Someone from our table asked one of the dining room managers at lunch that day, we were told that shorts would be fine, so the men at our table, wore shorts. We also saw many other men wearing shorts as well. We were on the 8-23-03 Eastern Sailing.

Here we go again, with an old topic that is always debated and never seems to go away....we too were on that 8/23 cruise and I wore shorts as well as we were encouraged by the restaurant staff to do so....we saw alot of men and some women who were wearing shorts and all looked very tropical and very appropriate, so, in my opinion, if you want to wear some nice shorts go ahead and do so....you won't be out of place......Andy

Ahhh... It seems that this question will never be solved as long as some cruisers want to wear shorts! :D

During our cruise in August, we saw a few individuals wearing shorts but the vast majority of people were dressed appropriately. I can't recall if our Navigator specifically spelled out "no shorts" or not but I do know that it has appeared on some of the Navigators.

On our cruise in May we called Guest Services about this subject and they recommended that no shorts or jeans were to be worn. By casual, they meant nice khaki pants.

It's interesting too that many people have stated that they have asked their wait staff about the policy. I may be naive, but wouldn't you think this source of information may be a bit biased? I mean, if you were going to receive the vast majority of your weekly pay from an individual you were waiting on, would you really tell them they couldn't wear shorts to the dining room? Of course, if you were fishing for a specific answer, this may be perfect.

[Just my opinion! This post is aimed at no one person!] ;)

I didn't think your response was geared toward us. Here's a little clarification, we did not ask the restaurant staff, rather they came around and reminded us to wear our most colorful and comfortable tropical outfits...shorts included. I don't think it was just our servers since we saw folks accross the dining room wearing everything from serongs to shorts. I believe that for this night, only, it's whatever you feel is appropriate. For my DH it was polo shorts (very nice khaki) and for me it was capris.

I just called DCL and was told for Tropi/Mexi night that "You should dress to the occasion" and that includes wearing appropriate shorts. I'm sure that if someone else called they could get a different answer......

Whether aimed at anybody or not, this comment seems to insult anyone wearing shorts as dressed "inappropriately". This comment in itself is inappropriate. DCL will inform anyone who calls that on Tropical night passengers may wear shorts as this is considered appropriate attire for this night only in ALL of the dining rooms (yes, including Lumiere's). The servers have always informed our table and those around us that shorts are considered appropriate in the dining rooms for this special night. The vast majority of the people on our 7/5/03, 7/6/02, and 7/7/01 cruises wore shorts on the Tropical/Mexicali night. Those who wore long pants or suits were not turned away; nor were they the vast majority.

As I said, I really wasn't referring to anyone who had posted on this thread. And, just to clarify, I have personally called Guest Services and have PERSONALLY asked if shorts were considered "appropriate" for Tropical/Mexical night. The response from Guest Services was, get this, "NO." So, from this information that was personally gathered, those individuals who wore pants were APPROPRIATELY dressed according to the information that I received from Guest Services.

I think many would attest to the fact that this isn't always true. If DCL wants shorts to be worn, why do they print "No jeans or shorts, please." on the Navigators at times? Wouldn't seem to make any sense.

The vast majority of the people on our 7/5/03, 7/6/02, and 7/7/01 cruises wore shorts on the Tropical/Mexicali night.

The vast majority on our cruises, 11/02, 5/03, and 8/03 were NOT wearing shorts. They were appropriatley dressed according to Guest Services.

I'm sorry that you think my original response was "inappropriate." (Although I am unsure as to why it was "inappropriate, I still stick to it. :)

Also, please keep in mind that I am not the "be all and end all" of wearing shorts to Tropical/Mexical night. I think much of the information posted on this board is "relative." It seems that what people are told, what experiences people have, and even what rules are stated change with each cruise.

Honestly, I do think the waitstaff would tell you the truth if you asked them. On the many trips we've been on, they've seemed pretty honest to me despite the tipping at the end of the week. JMO!

Jlawall--

I agree with you. Perhaps I should have phrased my response better as I did not mean to indicate that I felt the DCL Cast Members would intentionally be dishonest.

I just think that they may be more inclined to say that shorts were ok. I'm sure many of us can recall an event or a situation in which Disney was wishy-washy on a policy or procedure. The Cast Members may just be carrying that out on an individual level.

Exactly - which is why I personally feel the comment about wearing shorts being inappropriate was inappropriate.
