Just got off the Magic -- a couple tips

We just got off our first DCL cruise yesterday (Magic, W. Carrib.) and I have to say we loved it! The only problems we had were caused by our own sometimes high-maintenance children, but that's another story.

Anyway, since I got so much great advice from all of you veteran cruisers before we went, I thought I'd throw out two quick hints that I didn't see listed elsewhere (not that others might not have already known them).

1. Bring a water proof watch. I found only one small clock by the Mickey pool and none by the goofy pool, so I was frequently sneaking peeks at other people's watches. I also could have really used one for our day at CC, which has no clocks.

2. Beware of the humidity for little ones who aren't used to it. Living in California, our kids had never been in humidity for any extended time. DS3, who has asthma, found it particularly tough. After being ashore for 45 minutes, he was already panting and ready to fall asleep right in the middle of the street. When we saw a ship doctor for another reason, he suggested that before our next excursion we have room service bring Pedialyte pops for both kids (DD7, too) and have them eat them before going ashore. I think it helped. Who would have even thought to ask room service for Pedialyte pops!

Oh, one more thing, late dining is better. If your kids are so young that you worry about them eating that late, you probably don't want to eat with them anyway :) Our kids were starving early, so they were just as happy to grab something with us on Deck 9 at 5:30 or 6 and then hang out in the Oceaneer Club while we ate.

Anyway, I have so many other things to say, but I will reserve them for a trip report, which I will post in the next few days.

I wish I were going back soon!

thank for posting. I had no idea they had pedialyte pops either:confused3 Glad you enjoyed your first cruise!

Sounds like a great trip report coming up! Could you give us a quick update on which nights were formal, semi-formal, and Pirate night again? Sometimes search just takes so long! Thank you!

Thank you so much for posting this! I am so glad to hear about the Pedialyte pops. I would have never thought to ask. My DD3 is fair-skinned, and gets overheated so fast...and she hates drinking water. So those pops will be a blessing to me. I am already bringing a couple of Pedialyte bottles in my luggage to keep in the room, but the Pops will be an added bonus.

Also, thanks for the ideas on the late dining. I chose late dining for this reason...and my DH thinks I am nuts. Good thing to know it might turn out all right after all. :) My DD is such a night owl...I can't imagine hauling her out of the pool or out of the club at 4pm to get her ready for dinner. I'd go nutty.

I chose late dining (again) for the same reason (DS5 could be fed earlier then go to the club) but on our recent trip DH wanted him to come to dinner with us... and, yes! DS didn't have a very good time. He was tired, cranky, had to get up to go to the bathroom or whatever. I had to return to my food which had been delivered and covered with a fancy silver dome (thanks thoughtful servers!) twice and DH once.
Hate to say "I told you so!" so I just shot a few of "those" glances DH's way through out these meals!
Moral--- Don't push the little ones! Have dinner together as a family on a regular basis at home and enjoy your vacation when away!:teeth:

Good info, thanks! We're heading out this Saturday on the same itinerary.

How was the weather? Sounds warmer than I was expecting.

I don't suppose you have your navigators that you could share?

Thanks for the tip to take a water proof watch. I kept mine in my tote bag and was constantly diggin for it. And if I wanted to know what time it was and I was in the water I would have to get out and go dig through the tote and find my watch.

Absolutely bring a waterproof watch. But don't bother adjusting the watch when you change time zones on the western cruise. I did once in Grand Cayman and forgot to push the dial button back in all the way and water got into the watch and it stopped working.

Answering a few of your questions...

We had the formal night on Sunday (because it was New Year's Eve, but normally it's Monday night) and one semi-formal night on Thursday. Pirate night was Weds, in Cozumel.

The weather was perfect. It was in the low 80s the whole time, and the humidity made it feel warmer (but not stifling). I was a little worried the water would be too cold on CC, but it was fine too. Great for swimming or snorkeling.

The pedilyte pops were free, just like most things from room service.

Sorry, we don't have any navigators. I will tell you this ... one of the highlights of each day was getting the next day's navigator and seeing what was in store for us. I was most impressed with all the different activities they had planned for the kids at the Oceaneer Club. It wasn't just "throw 'em in a room and let 'em play."

I can't believe that! When my dd was a baby I had to pay $9 per tiny pedialyte bottle from the infirmary when she was sick! Luckily our insurance reimbursed us for it.

I have all the navigators from this cruise. I'll post them as soon as I can, but there is a HUGE football game tonight, so don't expect them today! I can say, however, that this was the most amazing cruise!! Fabulous weather, great ports, bizarre dinner companions and exemplary service. I'll get to my trip report soon. We drove down from Cleveland, so we didn't get home unitl late Sunday night. We're still very tired. It was interesting getting DS to school this morning.

More later

I'd love to hear about the bizarre dinner companions!

HillPete: looking forward to reading your TR!!!!

Sorry about the outcome of the game. Ouch.

It's ok, I only watched for the script OHIO at the beginning. My uncle always wanted me to play sousaphone so I could dot the 'I'. Ddin't happen, and I ended up going to a school that wasn't so huge that it had it's own zip code. :)

That is neat watching that.
