So, I finally broke down and bought one! Supposedly the best vacuum around. We got the Costco version and I get the thing home and first thing I do is vacuum a 4'X4' area in my living room and I can't believe the amount of dog hair, carpet fiber and gross stuff the machine picked up. BUT-----it's almost impossible to push. I mean seriously! I actually hurt my back vacuuming and had to stop after just the dining room. We have a new carpet and it's very thick, could that be the problem? Or is there something wrong with the machine? I'm really impressed by the amount of stuff it picked up buy honestly, it's almost impossible to push. Is this normal?

No thats not normal. Take it back to the store and get another one. Maybe a belt is off or something.

I hope thats it because I am sure you will love love this vacuume LOL

I love mine

I have one too, the "Animal" because we have lots of pet hair. Certain attachments are hard to push, specifically, the one for picking up pet hair on hard floors. That is the only criticism I have of the machine, generally I love it. I had a cleaning lady who seemed to be afraid of it, and never used it. She complained about it constantly. Obviously, I got rid of that cleaning lady.

I love my Dyson. I don't have any problems pushing it. You might want to have your machine checked out or exchange it for another one. I don't think you should be having this problem with a new machine.

I would make sure that you have it set for carpets instead of wood/linoleum floors. That can make a big difference.

If that's not it, I'd bring it back or try calling a customer service # to ask what to do - it shouldn't be that difficult to push. It's a light machine.

Good luck!

I LOVE my Dyson. Don't give up on it. The problem may be the floor setting, as someone already stated. I don't have any carpeting so I'm no help there...too many animals!

I had the same problem the first time I used the Dyson.
I'm pretty sure the problem was the settings for
carpet and bare floors. I read the whole manual, and
haven't had any problems since. When you change the
settings for carpet or floors, I think you have to have
the vacuum in the upright position. We have central vac,
so I don't use the Dyson all the time. There is a customer
service number to call also. I would try that before I lugged
the whole vacuum back to the store. GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I called customer service and the problem was too much suction and too thick of carpet. They had me remove a couple of gaskets so it didn't suck so much :) It's working fine now, still picking up gobs and gobs of gross stuff (dog hair, dust, dirt, carpet fuzz), it's amazing! Thanks again for all of the help!

wow, I'm glad I opened this thread. We have a Dyson that I never use because it is so hard to push. DH doesn't have a problem with it, so I told him if he wants to keep the vacuum, fine with me, but he's going to be the one to do all the vacuuming because I refuse to use it. Maybe it's just that the settings are wrong...guess I'll have to check it out.

Oh, no - WAIT!! WHAT am I saying??!! Forget that...I think I'm going to pretend I never saw this thread.

KimR, it's not that the settings were wrong, there was just too much suction for the height of my carpet. If you take off the covering that's over the roller bar you'll see a black rubber line above and below where the roller bar is. You can just remove those rubber "gaskets" and it decreases the suction. The lady at Dyson told me to save them in case we ever get different carpet, etc. PS - you don't have to share this with your husband :p
