Just Got Fitted

I have always thought that going to specialty stores to be fitted for running shoes was, quite frankly, stupid. I thought I could go to the mall or a large sporting goods store (where the guy in the shoe dept was working in the fishing lures section yesterday) and pick out my own shoes. Well, after hearing Dr. Phil and Dave Ramsey say, "How's that workin' for ya'?" to which the answer was a resound, "Not real good, my feet HURT!" I went today and got a new pair of shoes. I was told to take off my shoes and socks so that the person could look at my feet, she has a degree in exercise physiology after all. She brought out 6 pairs of shoes for me to try and the second pair that I tried were PERFECT, they are like wearing air!!!! (Mizuno Wave Rider 10s, btw)To all who had the attitude that I did, please, go get fitted by an expert who is also a runner. Your next shoes will be your best pair ever if you do. I can't wait to put some mileage on these babies:thumbsup2

I totally agree!!!! I use to shop at the outlets and ended up
with shin splints. I went to Hanlon's Shoes which is owned by
two runners here on the Cape. They fitted me with a pair of shoes
after checking my stride, arch, etc. and then told me to run on them
for a week or so and if they didn't feel good to bring them back!!!
After about 4-5 miles, they felt too snug. I brought them back
(try that at an outlet lol) and the next pair were Asics gels and I
love them!!! I have a pair for the street and a different pair for the
treadmill because your stride and how you push off your feet are
different so I needed more flexability on the street and more cushion
for the treadmill. Long story short... It's worth every penny!
I only buy my shoes there now :)

Good luck with your new running shoes BamaEd1!!!!!

I know I need to get fitted by a professional, but we don't have a 'real' running shoe store in town. I'll need to wait till we're traveling to find one. We have a couple of the usual small sports stores but no staff trained like you're talking about. I have a decent pair of Asics gels that are working out pretty well for now.

Nice, glad you got some shoes that work just for your needs. The difference can be pretty amazing. I started going to our local specialty running store a few years ago too. My feet and knees feel much better with the right shoes.

SamSam, I don't know where you are in Kansas, but if you are on the wsstern side and want to do a fun day trip, you can go to Elite Feet 1237 E. Danforth in Edmond, OK. (Oklhoma City metro area) They do orthotics if necessary as well as shoes and they can even modify your shoes!

In Colorado Springs if you ever get that way, downtown is the Runner's Roost. They are great there, too!

Steffwalks, Thanks for the info. I'm in the middle of Kansas (Salina), about 4 hours from OKC, but that would make a nice trip. Years ago my mom lived in a little suburb in South OKC and I enjoyed our trips there.
Anyone know a good store in Kansas City or Wichita, KS.?
Right now just doing the 15K, I'm pretty comfortable with the shoes I have, but when I finally bite the bullet and go for a 1/2 I think being professionally fitted will become more important.

I agree completely! When I started running back in December, I was using the wrong pair of shoes - they were the wrong size, the wrong type for my feet and best of all they were worn out (too many miles on them)

I went to a running store and the salesperson told me that I'm an over pronator and I should be picking running shoes that are half a size bigger than my dress shoe size. I didn't realize that feet expand during a race (duh!).

My knees felt a lot better with my new runners. I also felt like I had a lot more energy when running :goodvibes

My chiropractor also gave me some advice when picking out running shoes. He said (1) The front should flexible but not the actual rubber sole of the shoe. (2) The heel shouldn't flex (?) very much when you try and push them together. (3) The shoe shouldn't give when you try and wring like a dish cloth.

I had the same experience. when I first started running I was having all SORTS of issues. then I went and got prof. fitted. not only did they tell me I should size up half size--but they informed me I was even wearing the wrong size dress shoes !(so I went an entire full size up from the shoe I was wearing from a 9.5 to a 10.5--the difference was hard to get used to at first but now I cant imagine wearing those 9.5s... I also upsized my dress shoes to 10s and can I tell you how much more comfortable my feet are at the end of the day!!) I was also told that I was an overpronator and now my tootsies are much happier after long runs.

I'll jump in and "ditto" this one.

I just got fitted two weeks ago and, of course, I've been running in the wrong shoes for three years now.

Turns out I'm a supinator and according to the wear pattern on my running shoes, they were not rolling me in enough at all! I'm lucky not to have injured my knees at some point.

While it might cost you a bit more money to go to your local running store for shoes, it is worth every penny if the staff their is knowledgable enough to guide you into the right purchase.

Kevin -

I took all my running shoes into my podiatrist on my last visit. Turns out I am a major supinator too! I don't roll in at all! So, I'm just curious, what did you get? I need new shoes before the Minnie and need to find a good place to buy them.

Glad I'm not the only supinator on the boards, LOL.

The shoe I chose is the Brooks Radius 7:

They make a women's version of it as well.... it had the best fit of the bunch. I did also try on a Saucony that came in a very close second, a Nike I really didn't like and a couple others.... As it turns out, I was a bit limited on my choices, seeing as I needed WIDES!! :faint:

Geez, Kevin, we may be running on the same feet. I have platypus bills! I really like my Saucony Hurricane Grid 8s for the road. Those are the ones I need to replace though. And soon! Maybe I'll have a look at those Brooks. I think I found a good place to go, instead of the stupid mall stores. :rolleyes2
