Hi all--

We just came back and I thought I would share some packing tips with you.

1. If you are going at this time of year, BRING PONCHOS! Or at least plan on buying them in the parks. We used ours all the time. The weather would be sweltering hot and you'd be dying of heat stroke and then 5 minutes later it would be pouring down rain and freezing. Just keep the poncho with you because you never know when it will strike! When you get back to the hotel, be sure to take them out of your bag and air them out.

I packed a bunch of plastic bags and didn't use them at all. Maybe it's because we didnt go on Splash Mountain or Kali River Rapids. :confused3 We also did not need screwdrivers or most of the batteries I brought. We did use scissors to open a few kid toys that were in the hard plastic packages. Beach towels were also not needed -- we used them, they got wet and then we went back in the pool and they were still wet so we had to use the pool's towels. Should have left them at home.

Plastic baggies full of laundry soap plus quarters, was a good idea!

We didn't need sunscreen. But that's just us, I guess, because we are already tanned. We used it on pool days but not on park days. The mister fans were totally a godsend! You NEED them!!

Water: A lot of people suggested bringing packets of drink mixes. I bought them and they were expensive and the kids just played with them. I won't do that again. There seemed to be too much mix for a small bottle of water. We would bring a few ice cold bottles of water with us, but they would be gone after an hour or so. I have kids and ended up carrying everything so there was no way I was going to carry more than a few bottles of water. And it was so friggin hot, we drank water like crazy. The parks sell water for $2 a bottle and we just bought bottles as we needed them. Before the trip, I thought I wouldn't want to spend money on water, but we ended up spending so much money that a few more dollars for ice cold water was totally worth it. Especially if it meant I wouldn't have to carry more. My shoulders hurt after a few days.

My park bag had a small bag with my money, cards, cell phone, and camera. Then there were ponchos for everyone, plus some water, plus small changes of clothes for the kids if we thought there would be water attractions. Plus any packages/toys we bought. (And yes I know you can have packages delivered to the hotel, but our purchases were lots of little things that you wouldn't think to send back. But all the little things add up!) And the kids' autograph books. And the mister fans. If you have kids who will hold their own stuff, that's great, but mine won't and my bag was heavy and my shoulders hurt after a few days.

Hope this helps!

I completely agree with OP about the beach towels . . . next trip I'm just gonna leave 'em at home! :sad2:

My answer to the beach towels - a chamois! My kids have swim chamois that they use at swim meets (paid about $12 from Speedo - that was a while ago), but an ordinary chamois from the automotive dept will work just as well. You can even ditch the plastic case they come in, and use ziploc bags instead. A chamois is super-absorbent and easy to pack!

For future trips, I'm going to pack a lot fewer, but well chosen clothes. Last year, DH survived for 12 days with three boardshorts and three moisture wicking shirts (packed enough socks and underwear for the trip). Whenever he returned to the hotel for a shower and change, he'd hand wash his clothes, squeeze them out in a towel to remove the excess water and hang them in the shower. Hey presto - next morning, a clean DRY outfit. These quick-drying clothes also came in really handy for the inevitable downpours in the parks!

Meanwhile - the three girls and I travelled with way too much clothes, leaving us without enough room in our luggage for souvies and shopping! I also travelled with makeup that I couldn't wear in that heat etc.

For our August trip, I will try a modified version of DH's approach - a few quick drying pieces, a nice skirt & top in case we need to dress up for dinner, sneakers, flip flops and sandals - everything coordinated so that I can mix and match at will and that's it. My challenge this year is to see if I can pack for 10 days in my carry-on bag!

When we went 2 years ago, we tried to pack light but that backfired because it was so hot that there was no way I could re-wear the same clothes twice. So we would wear one outfit, go swimming, then put on another outfit. I wish I had packed 20 bra's! They were always so sweaty! (I know, TMI) Even so, we still managed to pack too many clothes this trip.

Thanks for the tips!:cool1:

Sorry your shoulders were hurting! Seems like the price we have to pay when our littleones don't like to carry their own things!

I have a suggestion for those aching shoulders, I have ordered a rolling shopping bag or tote from e-bags. I orderded it for a trip earlier this year and didn't use it, plan to when we take the grandkids next summer to WDW.

Or if that doesn't work, rolling backpack??

Grammie I would check before you bring anything with wheels into the parks. Doing research for our upcoming trip I remeber reading somewhere (I don't remember exactly the website or page) that rolled items ( ice chest, bags, backpacks) were not allowed at the parks. Please check before you go.

We were at Universal Studios a few years ago and we had a rolling backpack. We were immediately stopped by park security that we could not use the wheels in the park. Any backpack or tote had to be carried. The only thing allowed with wheels were strollers and wheelchairs. I assume Disney has the same rules. We were told it was for the safety of other guests.

OUr last summer trip was August 2006. I took sports bras in lieu of my regular bras. They dried much quicker than a regular bra.

If you accomplish this please share how you did it and how you packed. I am a self professed overpacker. I am getting a little better, but have yet to find a way to go anywhere for a week without at least a large checked bag and a stuffed carry on. Alot of my stuff is not necessarily clothes though. It is stuff like sunscreen, foot soak, peppermint lotion, Body Glide, Asorbine Jr., mole skin, sample sizes of my own shampoo, conditioners, and bath products, a white noise machine, too may shoes, etc. I always feel like I need to be prepared for anything.

Agree with not taking a rolling bag into the parks. It is against the rules and, even if you did get by Security, how would you feel if someone tripped over it (and they will) and got hurt!!

There are lockers at the front of each park, or you can take/rent a stroller to load your supplies.

Better yet, have a discussion with your children about the fact that, if they want it, they WILL carry it!!

Our family usually takes a bottle of water in a carrier with a shoulder/cross body strap which we all take turns carrying. We keep it filled from the drinking fountains and/or from ice water gotten at the CS areas. We take one small-size back-pack with the ponchos, umbrellas, etc (all small sized). Sometimes I will be asked by other older members (DH) of the group to carry something and if they aren't taking their turn carrying the bag and/or it is full - I say NO WAY JOSE ... you carry it yourself!!

Unless your children are really small, in which case you would have a stroller, they are certainly capable of carrying something!!

We're the same way, so recently we've started FedExing (3 day service - surprisingly reasonably priced) this kind of stuff a few days ahead of our arrival. It's helped get our carry-ons (DH refuses to check, even before the service charges) to very managable sizes/weights. :woohoo:

If you do decide to ship (FedEx, UPS ... ) be sure to use the exact street address of the resort hotel.

Good luck & have fun!

3 and a half weeks with one checked bag is going to be interesting! We have lots of signature restaurants booked so I want to be sure I have some decent stuff to wear. I also need sandals and trainers as well as my crocs. I will not pack towels this time as we never use them. I am going to try and buy bottoms and tops that I can mix and match and I will take some washing powder so I can do some laundry.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents on this tip. We did use the packets when we went but we didn't put them in water bottles. Ice water is FREE at all the restraunts so we would get a cup and add the crystal light to it. It was refreshing and cheap and we could just throw away the cup when we were done. :thumbsup2 This worked really really well for us! I just don't want people to completely discard this tip. :goodvibes

Thanks so much for the tips. We aren't going till November...and everyone is saying to pack for warm and cool weather...ugh....that's alot of clothes for a ten day stay. I appreciate your tips and hope to pack as wisely as I can.

I bought Target brand flavor packets and they were a lifesaver! We refilled our water bottles at water fountains and then added the flavor packets. It made the water much better!

the first thing i must ask is...screwdriver??? did you read somewhere that you would need one?

its nice to find another mom who doesnt use sunscreen there. i really thought i was the only one. in the beginning of every trip i bring it to breakfsat with good intentions, then by 2 ive realized ive forgotten it. but i really find that we are not outside long enough to get burned.

thanks for the tip on the towels, i was debating those for this year. ill just bring the kids cover-ups.
