Just got back from Pop Century 10/03/05

I LOVE the POP!! We have stayed at every resort numerous times- we are going back in Nov. for our 108th stay at Disney. I like the POP much better than any of the allstars. Our last trip in May was the best yet. My 76 year old mom lovedit, as did my husband and 7 year old son. It is my son's favorite resort yet.

It's always interesting to read how people's opinions differ. I, for one, intensely disliked the Allstar Movies so I have no plans to ever try Pop. But I would agree that everyone should at least give a Budget Resort a try because they are awfully cute and may just work out.

Then why not try it. You may like it. Who knows you may even fall in love with Buzz/Woody or how about Perdita/Pongo or Baloo/Mowgli or Mr/Mrs Potato Head.... They are at the ASMo and POP. What is it that you dislike about the Allstar Movies? Just curious.

Awww... I like Motel 6! And Motel 8! ;)

I got the feeling I was living in the middle of the candyland game.
Awwww... I like that game! I don't mind staying in one of those candyland resort! I think that would be real fun! And no wonder the children loves POP, to them it's the candyland resort! :)

I always thought Pop was supposed to be the best of the value resorts? :confused3

We DID stay at the All Stars and the place didn't work for us. I guess that my original post wasn't very clear. We stayed at All Star Movies and didn't enjoy it therefore I've decided not to bother with Pop.

I do encourage others to give one or the other a try though. Just because they don't work for us doesn't mean that others won't like them.

thank you, thank you, thank you... :love2:
I was beginning to doubt my decision for my upcoming January trip with my dd who is 8. She has been wanting to stay there and I thought I would surprise her with a stay there...

In all of these reports most folks don't give times of day when these problems occurred.

I love the values and never have crowding problems, but then again.....

I usually leave the resort at 6:30 in the morning and only grab a bagel and banana on my way to the bus stop.....

I'm usually dragging myself back to the resort after midnite.......

The resort is blissfully quiet and I sleep like a rock.....

Yes, I do take mid day breaks, but not back at a Value Resort.

I go to any of the deluxes or moderates and eat lunch there, wander the grounds, find a quiet hammock or bench, or a quiet corner of their lobby and put my feet up. Or I go to their pool bar and relax.

Now, if for some reason I'm at my value resort between 8am and 10pm, yes, they feel crowded, noisy, lots of rude people, etc., etc.. For example, when we were stuck for 36 hours straight at All-Star Movies during hurricane Jeanne, I was like MY GOD, this is awful. If that had been my first trip at a value, I would have never been back. But I know that was an unusual situation, and my normal touring allows me to avoid the hordes. We did manage to slip the crowds a bit by taking our ECVs around on a tour of all three All-Stars and looking at all of the buildings and the damage. It was still raining, so most folks were staying inside. We put our rainsuits on and forged along outside.

So folks that are not super early folks, or are resort folks, may want to consider a moderate or deluxe, because 2000+/- rooms x 4 people per room in a small area, makes for loud and crowded.

I guess all I'm saying is consider your touring habits and time of day that you'll spend at the resort when reading reviews of resorts!!

I can actually expand on that. We sleep in for Disney terms. We usually get up around 9:00 and are off to the parks around 10:30. My fiance would go to EP and get breakfast and bring it up to the room while I was finishing getting ready. We rarely came back to eat at EP for other meals other than breakfast, but twice we did. We would normally come back in the afternoon for about an hour just to take our shoes off and sit down and then we were off again. We also got back to the resort around midnight each evening. We never had any problems with crowds or lines longer than 10-15 minutes MAX except for at the MK after Wishes. Never had any noise issues, except in the morning from mousekeeping, and we had a blast! I think it's dependent on your expectation level. If you are preparing yourself for a quiet, relaxing vacation with no kids and lots of romance then don't stay here, otherwise, HAVE FUN!

We just got back from POP last night. I liked the room (7449) far better than the room at CSR where we stayed last time. Nice and new and clean. We were on the top floor and we did hear some noise now and then, but nothing to complain about. The pools were fine, but I would have loved it if there had been a zero entry at one of them for my little guy, DS2.

The food court was very manageable except for Saturday morning. We slept in after MNSSHP and it was packed. It was also a high turnover day so you had people coming in and leaving and they were all eating. We found seating just fine though; the lines were long. All of the other days we were up early and gone before the crowds.

My only complaint is the inconsistency of the bus service. Our best case scenario was a bus waiting when we walked up. Our worst case was Sunday night. We figured (incorrectly) that MK would have lots of busses running since it closed early and would be taking people to and from it for the Halloween party. We had dinner reservations at 1900 Park Fair that night. A full bus pulled away as we got there at 5. Another bus did not come until 5:40 :confused3 We also waited a while (about 30 min) leaving AK at 1 pm on Friday.

My kids loved the icons and the Goofy fountains. I can't say I LOVE the resort, but it was definitely good. Bus service aside, it was a great trip.

WOW! interesting statement...I have stayed at all levels of resorts at WDW along with my DH from the Grand through the All *'s..soo we are BY FAR newbies and when we tried out the POP for a few times last year we had a GREAT time! we even resort hopped on our stays and switched midway through and BOY O BOY when we switched to POFQ we were sorry we did..This year since we have our DD with us for the first time and she will only be 9mo we knew we wanted 'eye candy' for her like the big icons, so once again we chose the POP! it was soo good to us!

It's all in the person and how they are willing to look at their vacation IMO. MY dh and i NEVER once heard showering on either side of us and bathroom usage...AND we know their were people on each side cause during hurrican frances we were stranded in our rooms and got to know our neighbeors quite well with talks on the balcony!!

Don't get worried if you're going to try it, chances are you'll love it! every resort needs a decent try!

As you can see I'm no newbie. I've been going to DW since 1971 once or twice a year. I love pop. I've said it before: to enjoy DW and pop leave early early early. You will sit on a bus and the food court is private and the parks have no lines. We sleep late occasionally to make up for early mornings and then, we take an uncrowded DTD bus. You just have to plan and you will love pop too. It is our absolute favorite.

SonicLogic,
Don't the All-Star buses pick up at more than one All Star resort? I'm sure I read that All Stars share buses, soo, Now you have 3,840 guests or more sharing the same bus route. That would be MORE than Pop!

During truly crowded times, the All Stars have separate buses, but, in general, they do share. That's why, after my last stay at All Star Movies (the last All Star stop), I vowed never to stay there again.

Forgive me if I am repeating what someone else said but I am exhausted as I just got home from Pop Century! As a DVC member for 5 years I have stayed in deluxe many times and reading these posts had me concerned about POP. We were just in Disney in March and this was an extra trip to partake in the free dining. Ah the free dining...but that's another thread!! (IT WAS GREAT).
I wanted to keep the cost to a minimium so I thought I would try POP. The day we checked in (Saturday, the first) was not pleasant. Magical Express was great but it took us an hour to check in!!!Then I am given a room in building two which made me suggest they put me in another resort it was so far away. When I made the reservation the CM suggested building 12 or 13 to be near the buses etc. Well there is no building 12 or 13 as they were quick to tell me. Goes to show you THEY DO NOT LOOK AT REQUESTS! I was annoyed and let them know it. We finally get to the room and freshen up for our dinner ADR and wait 40 minutes for the bus to Magic Kingdom. I wanted to cry. We were late to dinner but guest services called ahead to say we were coming. After that day things improved considerably!!!!!!!! Other then Tuesday night leaving Epcot at 10 in the rain at which time we waited more then a hour for the bus, the service was great. The rooms are not as small as I expected, they were spotlessly clean, and I never heard a sound from anyone and the hotel was booked! It turned out that although there was a walk the location was nice and quiet. The bowling pool was a delight. Big and always empty with a place to sit, which is more then I can say for the deluxes! grrrrrr We only ate once at the food court for breakfast and it was busy but manageable. If they can fine tune the bus situation it is a great place! If you are driving it would be ideal! They were very nice!
Try it!!!

I just returned from a stay at Pop 9/30-10/4. The food court was crowded, but lines moved quickly and there was plenty of seating. The bus service was wonderful, with minimum wait times to and from the parks. My only complaint would be the noise level in the rooms. You could hear not only the flushing of the toilets but why they were flushing. Also a lot of your neighbors conversations were available to your ears, like it or not. If you need peace and quiet this is not the resort for you.

We were just there last month and loved it. I do worry about an 8 night stay though and our comfort. I would love to move up to POR, but I have others going along that can't afford the switch!

We just got back from POP on 10/4. I thought the food lines were very manageable, with many registers open. We were in the 50's building, with very little unsupervised children. I do agree with the noise issue, but what can you do! The buses lines were a little long at times, but I thought it wasn't too bad.

I must have been very lucky, I heard the toilet flush a few times, no more then at AKL or VWL, no conversations and it was very quiet. I was in Building 2 front facing the pool.

I agree with the positive remarks. I loves it too. We have just returned 10 days ago from a week stay there. I see no problems. I will posting pix and reviews from trip soon. Enjoy your stay there we did!!! :earsboy:

The WDW bus system is very dynamic and (as correctly noted by CheshireVal) the bus skews change at the All Stars based upon demand. For example, each All Star resort has it's own set of buses going to and from the MK. The Sports has its own set of buses, Music its own set and Movies has its own set. If demand for MK (for example) is larger than expected, they have a pool of extra reserve buses (that stage in the north parking lot of Music) that can be immediately dispatched to meet the demand. They stage the buses at Music for speed because it is midway between the other two resorts. Conversely, if demand is less than expected, they free up those buses for other All Star destinations or other Animal Kingdom resorts (i.e. AKL or CSR).

A similar bus skew works at the All Stars for the other parks as well. Let's use Epcot for an example. Normally during the morning, the empty buses going from the All Stars to Epcot will first stop at Sports and pick up passengers. If the bus is not full, it will continue to Music to pick up more passengers and if still not full it will continue to Movies. However, if the bus reaches capacity at any time, it will head straight for Epcot. Then one of the aforementioned extra buses will be dispatched from the Music north parking lot to meet the extra demand.

Now, when the buses return from the parks it works differently. Again, the MK buses are separate for each All Star resort so you must catch the Movies bus (for example) to return to Movies (since the bus will not stop at Sports or Music). At the other parks and DTD, as the buses return to the All Stars, they stop and drop off passengers and also pick up passengers at each resort. They go in the order of Sports, Music and Movies most of the time although sometimes the driver will switch the rotation! However, again, the buses run on a dynamic basis that changes to meet demand.

In short, the All Star bus routes are very flexible and can easily be adjusted to meet guest demand. Many of the other Disney resorts have similar bus sharing routes.

Now, with POP the bus system is different. All the buses at POP are dedicated exclusively to POP. POP doesn't share with other resorts. Pretty good, right? Wrong. They end up having less buses than they need and, frankly, all the other resorts come first. The POP has no place to stage reserve buses because all of the POP parking areas are so small. The POP generally gets the bottom of the bus transportation barrel. I have seen several occasions when buses which were in route to the parks to pick up guests at the POP bus stop, changed their bus marques at the last minute and instead picked up guests from other resorts (such as the All Stars). The poor POP guests were left to wait for another bus.

In short, the POP bus system is less dynamic and more static than much of the WDW system. The current bus problems will not be solved until the other half of the POP resort opens. Even then, I doubt it will get much better.

Now, as for the guest capacity at the All Stars vs. the POP. Each All Star resort accommodates up to 1,920 guests. Of course, there are 3 All Star resorts so total capacity is 5,760. So, for 5,760 guests at the All Stars you have 3 separate resorts, 3 bus stops, 3 food courts, 3 game rooms, 6 swimming pools and 30 separate buildings.

POP is only halfway built, so it only accommodates 2,880 guests. They have 1 bus stop, 1 food court (640 seating capacity), 1 game room, 3 swimming pools and 10 buildings. When the other half is built the POP will accommodate the same number of guests as all 3 All Star resorts, 5,760. Yet the POP will only have 2 bus stops, 2 food courts, 2 game rooms, 6 swimming pools and 20 separate buildings!

Each of the POP buildings are 4 stories high while the All Star buildings are each 3 stories. The POP is clearly a WDW endeavor to cram as many people in as small a space as possible. If you have the herding instinct, then the POP is a wonderful resort!

Our stay at POP was for 8 nights and our comfort level was fine. Our only complaint was that we requested a king due to both of us being very tall (and not exactly thin :rotfl: ) and we didn't get it. We slept in separate beds most nights because it was too cramped for both of us in one double and after walking ALL day we wanted to be comfortable. If you have 4 adults in a POP room, 8 nights might be a comfort issue, otherwise, you should be ok.
